CD ripping is not simply copying files from a disc. A good ripper reads audio sectors repeatedly when necessary, identifies the disc, tags the tracks, downloads artwork, and gives you evidence about whether the result matches a known-good rip.
For most people, dBpoweramp CD Ripper is the best overall choice in 2026. It combines secure ripping, AccurateRip verification, broad metadata sources, artwork and multiple output formats in a comparatively straightforward interface. Windows users who want a free and highly configurable tool should choose Exact Audio Copy; Mac users should start with XLD.

Do not read the version dates as a quality ranking. EAC remains useful despite its 2024 release, and XLD’s latest listed application build is from 2025 rather than 2026. Conversely, foobar2000’s 2.26 preview, dated July 23, 2026, is not the same thing as its stable 2.25.10 release.
Best overall: dBpoweramp CD Ripper
dBpoweramp CD Ripper is the easiest recommendation if you want secure extraction without spending an afternoon learning every drive option. The program can use AccurateRip Meta, GD3, Discogs, MusicBrainz and freedb for disc information. It also supports embedded artwork, multiple encoders and formats including FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF, MP3, Opus and Ogg Vorbis. That makes it suitable whether you are building a lossless archive or producing smaller files for a phone.
How to enable secure ripping
- Insert a CD and open dBpoweramp CD Ripper.
- Click the green menu button on the top toolbar.
- Choose CD Ripper Options.
- Open Ripping Method and select Secure (Recover Errors).
- Use Secure Settings beside that option to review the drive configuration.
The default 1,024 KB cache setting is intended to exceed the audio cache in the drive, preventing cached reads from undermining the comparison process. A scratched disc can still take a very long time: secure ripping may retry a damaged area repeatedly, which is why the program includes Secure Rip Abort options. Without a sensible abort limit, one bad disc can occupy the drive for roughly two hours.
dBpoweramp can also detect and offer HTOA, or Hidden Track One Audio. HTOA is audio stored before track one and does not have a normal metadata field. Whether it can be extracted depends on the optical drive.
Choose it if: you want the least fiddly route to verified, tagged FLAC or ALAC files.
Watch for: it is commercial software after the 21-day fully functional trial. Reference Personal is currently listed at $48, with a family pack at $84 and two years of updates included.
Best free Windows ripper: Exact Audio Copy
Exact Audio Copy (EAC) is the best choice for Windows users who want maximum control without paying. It is free for non-commercial use and its official release remains V1.8, last changed July 15, 2024.
EAC offers secure, fast and burst extraction. Secure mode rereads sectors and compares results; burst mode reads without error checking. In the worst case, secure extraction can reread a problematic sector up to 82 times, depending on the recovery settings. That thoroughness is useful for valuable or scratched discs, but it can make a difficult CD slow.
Important EAC setup checks
- Open Drive Options and run the automatic feature detection.
- Let EAC test for accurate stream support, audio-data caching and C2 error-pointer support.
- Confirm that the extraction method is secure rather than assuming the default is secure.
- Use Test & Copy for important discs. Matching test and copy CRCs show that the two reads were consistent.
- Check the log and AccurateRip result after extraction.
EAC’s FAQ warns that a default configuration may use burst mode. A very fast rip is therefore not automatically a trustworthy rip. If automatic drive detection fails, go to Drive Options → Read Commands and manually select a command such as MMC1, as recommended by EAC’s troubleshooting guidance.
For uncompressed WAV output, press F11, open the Waveform tab and select Internal WAV routines. Choosing a compressed WAV option can result in unexpectedly small files. For organized output, a template such as %a%n - %t creates artist folders and names tracks with their track number and title. EAC does not accept an absolute path in that template field.

EAC removed built-in freedb support in version 1.7 and now integrates the AccurateRip metadata service. It also includes updated FLAC and CTDB components. On a badly scratched disc, burst mode can occasionally recover audio that secure mode cannot, but any burst result needs checking because burst mode performs no real error correction.
Choose it if: you use Windows, want a free tool and are comfortable checking drive settings, logs and metadata.
Watch for: the interface exposes more technical choices than most beginners need, and the default setup should be verified rather than trusted blindly.
Best open-source alternative with CTDB: CUERipper
CUERipper is included in the current CUETools 2.2.6 package. It is a portable, open-source Windows ripper with support for MusicBrainz, freedb, AccurateRip and the CUETools Database (CTDB). It is less configurable than EAC, which is its main advantage for users who want fewer decisions.
Download the complete portable archive, unpack all of it into one folder, and run CUERipper.exe. If you want settings stored beside the program for USB-style portability, remove the file named user_profiles_enabled.
Its basic Secure mode reads a section once and then performs one retry. CUERipper can save separate audio tracks, cue sheets and optional native or EAC-style logs. That combination is useful if your archive needs to preserve the original disc layout rather than just a directory of independent FLAC files.

Best Mac CD ripper: XLD
XLD is the most natural choice in this group for a Mac user who wants a native application. It can obtain CD information from online services and decode, convert and play lossless audio. It is distributed as a macOS disk image rather than being a Windows application adapted through a compatibility layer.
The latest main download listed by the project is xld-20250302.dmg, dated March 2, 2025. That slower release cadence is worth noting, but it is not proof that the project is abandoned. Check that the current build launches correctly on your macOS version before committing to a large archive. The project’s historical listing mentions macOS 10.4 and later, but that should not be treated as a guarantee that every old build works on current macOS releases.
Choose it if: you want a Mac-native ripper and do not need EAC’s Windows-specific drive configuration.

Watch for: its application release is older than the current dBpoweramp release, so test compatibility with your particular Mac first.
Best for users already running foobar2000
foobar2000 is primarily a flexible Windows audio player, but it can also handle Audio CDs. The official format list specifically marks Audio CD support as Windows only. It is not a cross-platform CD ripper.
CD ripping and conversion require the Converter component. If you install foobar2000 for this purpose, select Optional Features → Tools → Converter. Once the disc tracks are loaded into a playlist, select them, right-click and choose Convert. The official encoder pack supplies the free encoder binaries used by the Converter component.
foobar2000’s stable Windows release is currently 2.25.10. The site also lists a 2.26 preview dated July 23, 2026; use the stable build unless you specifically want to test preview software.

Choose it if: foobar2000 is already your music manager and you want one application for playback, conversion and occasional ripping.
Watch for: it is not the clearest dedicated secure-ripping setup for a new user. dBpoweramp, EAC or CUERipper are better starting points for a large archival project.
Best Linux and terminal option: abcde
abcde—A Better CD Encoder—is aimed at users who prefer scripts and configuration files to a graphical interface. It automates disc identification, extraction, encoding, tagging and file naming. It can output FLAC, MP3, Ogg/Vorbis, AAC/M4A and other formats.
For a basic FLAC rip, the command is:
abcde -o flacThe -o option selects the output format. abcde can also create one FLAC image with an embedded cue sheet instead of separate track files, which may suit archival workflows that need to retain the disc’s track layout.

Homebrew currently lists abcde 2.9.3 and supports Apple Silicon and Intel macOS builds. However, Homebrew marks the formula deprecated and lists a disable date of December 8, 2026. Linux users who install it through their distribution’s package manager should check the package age and dependencies.
Choose it if: you are comfortable with the shell and want a repeatable, automatable workflow.
Watch for: it is not a polished, beginner-oriented desktop application, and package availability may change.

Secure mode is a process, not a guarantee. The software reads sectors more than once and looks for consistency. If the disc is badly damaged, the drive may still be unable to recover the correct samples. EAC can report suspicious positions, while dBpoweramp can report an insecure rip or an AccurateRip disagreement.

Burst mode is not secure mode. It is faster because it does not perform the same rereading and comparison. It can be useful as a recovery attempt on a damaged CD, but do not treat speed alone as evidence of quality.
The optical drive matters as well. Audio caching, inaccurate C2 reporting, lack of accurate-stream support and firmware behavior all influence how a ripper can validate reads. For important discs, configure the drive, retain the log and keep the verification result with the files.
FLAC, ALAC or WAV?
For an archival copy, FLAC and ALAC are both lossless. Neither reduces sound quality compared with WAV. The practical difference is compatibility: FLAC is widely supported by music servers and non-Apple players, while ALAC can fit more naturally into Apple-oriented libraries. WAV is broadly readable but carries less convenient tagging and album-management support in some programs.
