The most dependable Valheim base is defended in layers: prevent spawns inside the settlement, slow attackers with a moat or raised earth, stop them at a stakewall or stone wall, and force survivors through one bridge or gate. Keep portals, storage, beds, farms and animals behind that perimeter, then protect rooflines and elevated firing positions from airborne threats. Revisit the design after each boss milestone or move to a more hostile biome, because raid checks depend on progression, biome and proximity to a base.

Why layered defense is more reliable than one wall

A single perimeter fails in several predictable ways. Ground enemies can concentrate on one section, large creatures can damage or reach over a light barrier, and flying attackers ignore a wall that has no upper protection. A moat or earthwork buys distance, while a wall supplies a repairable physical stop. A narrow entrance gives you a known place to fight instead of forcing you to defend every side at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Layering also limits the consequences of a breach. Put low-value or replaceable structures near the outside edge. Move your most important assets farther inward, so a damaged gate or broken stakewall does not expose every workbench, chest and animal pen immediately.

Control enemy spawning inside the settlement

Spawn prevention is the first layer because it removes the most dangerous failure mode: an enemy appearing beside a bed, portal or storage room. Workbench coverage helps prevent creatures and raid enemies from appearing inside protected areas. The practical goal is continuous coverage across the whole build, not merely one bench beside the main house.

Map coverage before hiding the stations

  1. Place temporary workbenches around the planned perimeter and inside large open areas.
  2. Walk the entire settlement, including farms, animal pens, docks and paths, and look for uncovered gaps.
  3. Add overlapping coverage until no part of the build area depends on a single edge of a station’s protection.
  4. Only after the layout is covered, replace visible temporary benches with concealed campfires, torches or strategically placed wards where that suits the build.

Overlapping stations are useful because expansion, terrain changes and demolishing one structure can otherwise create a small unprotected pocket. Concealment is a presentation choice, not a reason to remove coverage. Keep enough access to repair or replace the hidden protection.

Check the places players forget

  • Animal shelters and breeding areas outside the main wall.
  • Fields, tree plots and smelting yards that were added after the original house.
  • Roof terraces, docks and narrow strips between buildings.
  • Space immediately inside a gate or beneath a bridge approach.

If an attack begins inside one of these areas, a strong outer wall cannot undo the damage. Treat every area that contains a valuable object or living creature as part of the protected settlement.

Use terrain to create distance

The hoe is the central tool for defensive terrain. A moat, trench or raised bank changes where enemies can stand, how quickly they reach the wall and whether large attackers can apply pressure to the same point. Terrain is resource-efficient because it uses the ground rather than a long line of building materials.

Moats and trenches

Dig the moat outside the main wall, leaving a stable strip for the wall’s foundation and a crossing at the entrance. A continuous trench is more useful than an impressive section that stops at a corner. Inspect every bend, shoreline connection and slope for a route that lets enemies bypass the obstacle.

Moats are especially valuable against ground raids and large creatures that would otherwise stand directly against a wall. They do not solve flying attacks, and they can be awkward to add after buildings, roads or farmland already occupy the perimeter. Plan the excavation before you place permanent structures.

Raised earth and inner banks

An earth bank inside or beside a trench gives the wall a higher, more stable line and adds another obstacle after an attacker crosses the outer depression. The defensive-walls guidance recommends combining a moat with an inner earth or structural wall rather than treating the ditch as a complete defense.

Raised earth can be shaped to fit irregular terrain, but it changes sight lines and may obstruct your own movement. Leave service paths and a deliberate entrance rather than cutting random steps through the bank. A neat, continuous bank is easier to inspect after a raid.

When terrain is the wrong first choice

Do not excavate a moat through a compact early camp if doing so would destroy your farms or leave the entrance exposed while you work. A shallow trench or raised-earth lip can provide an interim layer; deepen and widen it when you have enough space and time. In a dense or highly uneven site, a stone perimeter may be easier to retrofit, although it costs more resources.

Choose the right physical barrier

Stakewalls are the fast early-game answer. They are comparatively cheap, quick to place and suitable for enclosing a compact camp. Their weaknesses are durability, limited protection against larger threats and the need for inspection and repair after events.

Stone walls are the stronger permanent perimeter once the required resources and progression are available. They present a clearer boundary and tolerate more punishment, but they take more material and construction time. A stone wall still benefits from an outer terrain obstacle; replacing a moat with stone alone leaves attackers able to stand directly at the barrier.

Method Resource and build burden Ground-raid reliability Large-enemy protection Air coverage Repair and expansion
Stakewall Low cost and fast construction for an early perimeter Useful as an initial stop, especially with terrain support Limited; inspect damage after attacks None by itself Easy to extend, but frequent repairs can become a chore
Stone wall Higher material and labor requirement Strong permanent layer when combined with terrain Better resistance than stakes, though not a substitute for a moat or bank None by itself Clear long-term boundary, but costly to move or rebuild
Moat or trench Low material cost; substantial digging time Slows and separates ground attackers Helpful against large ground threats when continuous None Hard to retrofit around established buildings; little wall repair required
Raised earth Low material cost; shaping time depends on terrain Creates distance and a higher defensive line Useful as an inner obstacle with a wall None Flexible on irregular ground, but can constrain roads and sight lines
Ballista position Specialized construction plus ammunition Supplementary fire, not a ground barrier Can cover large targets if it has a clear line of fire Potentially useful against airborne or upper-edge threats Needs protection, ammunition and post-raid durability checks

Make one controlled entrance

A bridge or gate turns the perimeter into a predictable engagement. Attackers have fewer places to contact the wall at once, and you can concentrate your own attacks on the approach. Keep the crossing narrow enough to remain defensible while leaving room for your own carts, animals and building materials if the settlement needs them.

Place the entrance after the terrain

  1. Complete the moat, trench or raised bank around the site.
  2. Select the approach with the best visibility and the least opportunity for enemies to reach level ground beside the wall.
  3. Build one bridge or gate across that opening.
  4. Use the wall and bank to prevent accidental side routes around the crossing.
  5. Move storage, portals, beds and livestock farther inside than the entrance.

A gate is a fighting position, not merely an opening in the wall. Leave enough room behind it to retreat without running into a house, and avoid placing flammable or irreplaceable structures directly against the inner side.

Protect rooflines and upper edges

Ground barriers do not cover roof openings, elevated terraces or the upper approach to a wall. Airborne attackers can bypass a moat and may strike exposed animals or work areas. Enclose roof openings and inspect the top edge of the perimeter as carefully as the ground line.

Protected firing positions

Ballistas can add specialized coverage where they have a clear line of fire. Place them behind a wall, bank or other protection so attackers cannot disable them immediately. They need ammunition and space to track targets; a device aimed into a roof, tree canopy or nearby tower is not useful.

Stakes or similar upper-edge obstacles can add another deterrent near exposed ledges. They are a supplement, not a replacement for spawn control and a continuous ground perimeter. After every raid, inspect upper defenses because impacts reduce durability even when the main wall remains intact.

Layouts that fit each stage of progression

Early game: compact and repairable

Keep the first settlement small enough to cover completely. Use overlapping workbench coverage, a compact stakewall and a shallow moat or raised-earth lip where the terrain permits. Make the entrance narrow, and place crafting stations, storage and sleeping space behind the first barrier. Repair damaged stakes after each event rather than waiting for several weak sections to accumulate.

Do not spend the early phase building a huge perimeter around land you are not using. A smaller protected footprint is easier to cover and gives you a shorter wall to defend while resources are limited.

Mid game: turn the camp into a layered compound

When resources allow, reinforce or replace the outer barrier with stone. Deepen or widen the moat, raise an inner bank and reduce the settlement to one bridge or gate. Extend spawn protection across every farm and animal pen; these additions often sit outside the original workbench pattern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At this stage, separate the outer working yard from the inner storage and sleeping area. A breach can then damage a replaceable structure without immediately exposing your most valuable stockpiles.

Late game and hostile biomes: protect the vertical space

Use an outer terrain obstacle, inner stone wall, controlled gate and protected firing positions. Enclose roof openings and exposed livestock areas. Add ballistas only where their lines of fire are clear and the machines can be sheltered from direct attack. In a hostile biome, build the perimeter before filling the site with valuables, because relocating a moat, bank and stone wall later is expensive.

A practical construction sequence

  1. Choose the site. Prefer ground that gives you a clear view of approaches and enough room for a continuous perimeter. Mark shorelines, slopes and any natural gaps that could become bypasses.
  2. Define the protected footprint. Include every planned building, farm, pen, dock and path rather than drawing the wall only around the main house.
  3. Establish spawn coverage. Use temporary workbenches to map overlapping protection, then decide where concealed campfires, torches or wards can maintain it without obstructing work.
  4. Shape the outer terrain. Dig the moat or trench, or raise an earth lip and inner bank. Keep the future gate location open and verify that no side route remains.
  5. Build the first barrier. Use stakes for a quick perimeter or stone for a durable one. Leave inspection access so you can see the outer face after a raid.
  6. Construct the single entrance. Add the bridge or gate only after the terrain makes the approach predictable. Test your own movement with building materials, carts and animals.
  7. Move high-value assets inward. Put portals, storage, beds, livestock and irreplaceable work areas behind the inner layer, not beside the gate.
  8. Add vertical protection. Close roof gaps, protect upper edges and install firing positions where they have clear sight lines.
  9. Run a breach audit. Walk outside and inside the entire perimeter. Look for uncovered spawn pockets, low corners, climbable banks, wall sections hidden from view and routes around the bridge.
  10. Test maintenance. Confirm that every wall segment, stake, gate and defensive device can be reached for repairs without leaving the settlement exposed.

After a raid: inspection and recovery

Start with the outer terrain and work inward. A damaged stake or wall may be the visible symptom of an attack that also opened a path around the moat. Check corners, shoreline transitions, bridge ends and any section hidden behind buildings.

  • Repair or replace damaged stakes and wall segments before rebuilding decorative structures.
  • Verify that workbench, campfire, torch or ward coverage still overlaps after repairs and expansion.
  • Check ballistas and upper-edge stakes for reduced durability and confirm that ammunition remains available.
  • Inspect animal pens, roof openings, portals and storage rooms for exposure.
  • Remove temporary stations only after the permanent coverage plan is working.

If enemies reached the inner compound, do not merely patch the point of impact. Identify why they reached it: an uncovered spawn area, a bypass around the terrain, a gate that allowed too broad an approach, or a valuable asset placed too close to the outer layer. Correct the underlying route before redecorating.

Fix: create an inner asset zone with distance from the outer layer.

Assuming ground defenses stop flyers

Symptom: roof structures or exposed livestock take damage while the moat and wall remain intact.

Fix: enclose roof openings, protect upper edges and add sheltered firing positions with clear lines of fire.

Overbuilding before progression changes

Symptom: a large early perimeter consumes time and resources but still lacks coverage or a defensible entrance.

Fix: protect a compact footprint first, then expand the layers after major progression milestones or when the biome changes.

When to redesign the base

Raid checks consider which bosses have been defeated, the biome and whether you are near a base. Those conditions change the threats your current perimeter must handle. Reassess after a major boss victory, before settling in a more hostile biome and whenever the settlement expands beyond its original workbench pattern.

A redesign does not always mean demolition. You can extend spawn coverage, deepen a weak section of moat, add an inner bank, replace stakes with stone and move assets inward in stages. Preserve the controlled entrance and continuous outer obstacle while upgrading the parts that failed inspection.

Best overall defense plan

For most settlements, the strongest cost-to-reliability path is:

  1. Map complete overlapping spawn protection with temporary workbenches.
  2. Use a moat, trench or raised earth to keep ground attackers away from the wall.
  3. Install a stakewall early and transition to stone as resources permit.
  4. Reduce the perimeter to one bridge or gate and keep valuable assets behind an inner layer.
  5. Protect rooflines and upper edges, adding sheltered ballistas only where they have ammunition and unobstructed fire.
  6. Inspect and repair every layer after raids, then revisit the design as progression and biome alter raid conditions.

This layered arrangement is more dependable than any single building piece because each layer covers a different failure mode: spawning, approach distance, direct contact, concentration at the entrance and attacks from above.
