Short answer: If an unexpected text or email says Apple Pay detected a large purchase and tells you to call a number in the message, do not call it. This is a phishing and tech-support scam pattern designed to move you into a phone conversation with someone impersonating Apple Support, your bank, or a fraud department.
Reports from February 2026 describe several versions of the campaign, including fake blocked Apple Pay transactions, alleged Apple Store purchases, scheduled “fraud review” appointments, and warnings about suspicious Apple Account activity. The reports support the existence of a broad campaign targeting Apple users, but they do not establish a verified victim count in the millions. Treat “hitting millions” as headline language, not a measured statistic.
The fake Apple alert is bait for a phone scam
The message may contain an Apple logo, a case number, a transaction timestamp, a device model, a location, and a large-dollar amount. Those details are meant to make the alert feel like an automatically generated security notice. They do not prove that the message came from Apple or that a transaction occurred.
The most important clue is what the message wants you to do next: call a phone number, click a link, reply, or provide information to “stop” the transaction. The number is controlled by the scammer. Once you call, the person on the other end may claim to be Apple Support, Apple billing, your bank, or a fraud investigator.

Apple describes this type of manipulation as social engineering. The goal is usually to obtain an Apple Account password, a six-digit verification code, a device passcode, card or bank information, money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or access to the victim’s computer or phone. Apple’s official scam guidance says Apple will not ask for your Apple Account password, verification code, device passcode, or for you to disable security features.
How the scam unfolds
- A frightening transaction appears. The message claims that a purchase worth several hundred dollars or more was attempted through Apple Pay or an Apple Store.
- Fake evidence is added. A case ID, time, location, device information, or support-style formatting creates an impression of an internal security system.
- You are given a short deadline. The message may say the transaction will complete, your account will close, or you will be liable unless you act immediately.
- You are moved to a controlled channel. Calling the supplied number puts you in contact with the attacker, not Apple. Caller ID and logos can be spoofed.
- The caller invents an emergency. They may say your Apple Account or device has been hacked and that they need to “secure” it.
- The request becomes the theft. The scammer asks for a password, verification code, card number, security code, bank details, gift cards, a transfer, or remote access.
Some versions reported by users refer to an entity called “Electronic Hub USA.” That recurring wording is useful as a warning sign, but user reports do not establish who operates the campaign, how many people received it, or where it originated.
Red flags in fake Apple Pay unusual-activity messages
| What you see | Why it is suspicious | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| An unexpected Apple Pay or Apple Store charge | A message can be fabricated without any corresponding transaction. | Check Wallet and the underlying card account independently. |
| Call this number immediately | Unexpected-message phone numbers route to the scammer. Caller ID can also be forged. | Find Apple or your bank through its official app or website, not the alert. |
| Threats of account closure, liability, or an irreversible payment | Urgency is designed to prevent you from checking the claim calmly. | Stop, wait, and verify through a trusted channel. |
| A case number, timestamp, device model, or location | Specific-looking details are easy to invent and are not authentication. | Judge the message by its independent verification path, not its appearance. |
| A generic greeting or awkward placeholder | Mass phishing messages may contain poor grammar, unusual formatting, or missing personalization. | Do not reply to ask whether it is genuine. |
| A sender address, link, or domain that does not clearly belong to Apple | Display names and logos can be forged, and lookalike domains can be made to resemble Apple. | Do not open the link. Navigate manually. |
| A request for your password, six-digit code, card details, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or remote-control software | These are direct attempts to obtain credentials, money, or control of your device. | End the conversation. No legitimate Apple representative needs those items to cancel a supposed charge. |
How to check whether a charge is real
A suspicious message alone is not proof that an Apple Pay charge exists. Apple Pay is a wallet and payment-authentication system that uses cards issued by banks and other financial institutions. The card issuer is therefore an important independent source of truth.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open Wallet yourself. Do not tap a link in the message. Select the relevant card and review its recent activity if transaction history is available for that issuer.
- Check Apple purchase history. On a recent iPhone, a common path is Settings > [your name] > Media & Purchases > View Account > Purchase History. Labels can vary by iOS version and region.
- Open the bank or card issuer’s official app. Check pending and completed transactions, alerts, and card status. The issuer’s records matter more than the text’s claimed case number.
- Use Apple’s official support route independently. Type support.apple.com into the browser or use a support option already present on your device. Never use the phone number or link supplied by the unexpected alert.
If the claimed charge is absent from Wallet, Apple purchase history, and the relevant bank or card account, that is strong evidence that the message is using a nonexistent charge as a lure. It does not prove that your entire Apple Account is secure, so review account activity if you interacted with the sender.
Conversely, do not assume every Apple-related transaction message is fraudulent. If an unauthorized transaction really appears in the card account, contact the bank or card issuer immediately using the number on the physical card or the issuer’s official app. Do not call the number in the suspicious message.

What to do if you only received the message
Do not reply with “STOP” or ask the sender to confirm your account. A reply can signal that your number or email address is active and may lead to more scam attempts.
If you clicked the link but entered nothing
Close the page. Do not download software, install an app from the page, or approve a configuration profile. Update the device through its normal system settings and review your account and payment activity using official apps.
If the page downloaded a file or you installed something, treat the event more seriously. On an iPhone or iPad, review Settings > General > VPN & Device Management for an unfamiliar configuration profile. Do not remove a profile belonging to an employer or school without checking with that organization, but remove an unknown scam-related profile using trusted Apple guidance. On a Mac or PC, uninstall unfamiliar remote-access or support software and consider professional assistance if you cannot determine what changed.
If you called the number
Hang up, even if the person sounds professional or already knows your name, device model, or a few account details. Do not call back to argue or test the number. If you did not provide information, install software, approve a request, or send money, the immediate risk is lower, but independently review your Apple Account, devices, email, phone service, and payment records.
Be particularly cautious for follow-up calls. Scammers often reuse the first interaction to create a second emergency, such as claiming that the “security team” needs to finish a transfer or that your account will be locked unless you cooperate.

If you entered an Apple Account password or verification code
Assume the credential may be compromised. Change the Apple Account password immediately from a trusted device. If you cannot sign in, use Apple’s official recovery site, iforgot.apple.com, rather than a link sent by the caller.
- On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security > Change Password. Menu names can vary slightly by software version.
- Make sure two-factor authentication is enabled and review the trusted phone numbers under the Apple Account’s sign-in and security settings.
- Review the list of devices associated with the account by opening Settings > [your name] and scrolling through the device list. Select any device you do not recognize and remove it from the account.
- Check for account changes you did not make, including a changed recovery address, unfamiliar phone number, new payment method, or unexpected subscription.
- Secure the email account connected to Apple. Look for forwarding rules, recovery changes, unfamiliar sessions, or password resets.
- Contact your mobile carrier if you see signs of an unauthorized number transfer or SIM change. A compromised phone number can be used to intercept recovery attempts.
A six-digit verification code is not harmless information. It is intended to confirm a sign-in or security action. Apple Support will not ask you to read one to a caller who unexpectedly contacts you.
If you gave card or bank information, paid, or shared identity details
Contact the bank, card issuer, or payment provider immediately through its official app or the phone number printed on the card. Tell the representative exactly what was disclosed and when. Ask whether the card or account should be frozen, replaced, or monitored, and report unauthorized transactions promptly. Follow the institution’s instructions for disputing a transfer or payment; recovery is not guaranteed, but speed matters.
If you sent gift-card numbers, cryptocurrency, a wire transfer, or cash, contact the gift-card company, exchange, transfer service, or bank immediately. Save receipts, wallet addresses, transaction IDs, phone numbers, emails, and screenshots. Do not pay anyone who later promises to recover the money for an upfront fee.
Change any password that was reused elsewhere, but do it from a clean, trusted device if the scammer had remote access. Prioritize email, banking, shopping, and mobile-carrier accounts because they can be used to reset other accounts.

If you granted remote access
Disconnect the affected computer or phone from the internet. Turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data on a phone, or disconnect Ethernet on a computer. If the device is managed by an employer or school, contact its IT team rather than making changes that could destroy evidence or interfere with investigation.
From a different, trusted device, change exposed passwords and contact financial institutions. Remove the remote-access tool, review installed applications and browser extensions, and install operating-system and security updates. If the caller accessed banking sessions, entered commands, or installed software you cannot identify, get help from a qualified technician or the device manufacturer. Keep records of what happened and report the incident to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Apple supports physical security keys as an advanced option for people who want stronger protection against targeted phishing and social engineering. A security key is not required for ordinary Apple Account use, and it does not protect a bank account or stop a scammer from persuading someone to send money.
Apple’s requirements include existing two-factor authentication, compatible Apple software, and at least two FIDO-certified physical keys. Apple lists the YubiKey 5C NFC, YubiKey 5Ci, and FEITIAN ePass K9 NFC as examples. Availability and compatibility can vary, so check Apple’s current requirements before buying.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For stronger Apple Account protection, advanced users can consider a FIDO security key for Apple Account. Apple requires at least two FIDO-certified keys, compatible software, and existing two-factor authentication. Store the spare securely: losing all security keys and all trusted devices can lock you out of the account. This is an optional layer, not a substitute for ignoring unexpected calls and verifying transactions independently.
Why professional-looking branding is not evidence
A logo, a polished HTML email, a plausible transaction amount, or a caller who knows basic information about you can all be manufactured or obtained from previous data leaks. Even a phone number that appears local or familiar may be spoofed. The reliable test is the route you use to verify the claim.
That means opening the relevant app yourself, typing the organization’s address manually, or calling the number printed on a bank card. It does not mean searching the suspicious number and trusting the first result, because scammers can create fake support pages and advertisements around their numbers.

Geographic and claim limits
The February 2026 reporting reviewed for this article focuses largely on Apple users in the United States. It does not establish a definitive worldwide scope, a single source infrastructure, or the identity of the operators. Similar messages can appear in other countries, but local Apple, bank, carrier, and reporting procedures may differ.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Likewise, the available evidence does not provide a reliable count showing that millions of people received the messages or lost money. The practical advice is unchanged: an urgent Apple Pay alert that directs you to a number inside the alert should be treated as untrusted until independently verified.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can someone charge my Apple Pay account just by sending me a text?
Receiving the text does not by itself authorize an Apple Pay payment. However, the message may be part of a broader attempt to steal your Apple Account credentials, card information, verification code, or money. Check Wallet and the underlying card account independently.
Will Apple ask for my password or six-digit verification code?
Apple says it will not ask for your Apple Account password, verification code, device passcode, or for you to disable security features. Never read a verification code to an unexpected caller or enter it into a page reached from a suspicious alert.
What if I called the scam number but did not give the caller anything?
Hang up, block the number, and watch for follow-up attempts. Review your Apple Account devices, email, phone service, Wallet, and bank accounts independently. If you installed software or granted remote access, disconnect the device and follow the recovery steps in this article.
What is the safest number to call about a real Apple Pay charge?
Use the number on the back of the card that appears to have been charged or the card issuer’s official app. For Apple support, navigate independently to Apple Support rather than using a number in an unexpected text, email, pop-up, or caller ID.
Should everyone buy a physical security key?
No. Physical FIDO security keys are an optional advanced defense for Apple Accounts. Apple requires at least two compatible keys and existing two-factor authentication, and losing all keys and trusted devices can cause lockout. Most readers should first use two-factor authentication, unique credentials, current software, and independent verification habits.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: A fake Apple Pay unusual-activity message wants you to panic and call the attacker. Do not use its number, link, or reply path. Check Wallet and your bank directly; then contact Apple or the card issuer through an independently verified channel. If you shared a password, code, financial information, money, or remote access, start recovery immediately and report the fraud.
