Short answer: wired USB-C charging is still the best choice when you need the most battery in the next 10 to 30 minutes. In the original iPhone 12 Pro comparison, USB-C reached 52% in 30 minutes, while MagSafe reached 31%, ordinary 7.5W Qi reached 20%, and Apple’s 5W USB-A charger reached 17%. MagSafe was much faster than ordinary Qi and 5W USB-A, but it did not beat wired charging.

The answer is more nuanced in 2026. Newer MagSafe chargers can deliver up to 25W peak wireless power on supported iPhones, and Qi2 now has a 25W specification. Those systems can approach wired charging in some cases, but the actual result depends on the iPhone model, charger generation, adapter, cable, temperature, case, software, and charging curve.

Important date note: the measured comparison below is an archival December 2021 test of an uncased, fully depleted iPhone 12 Pro. It is useful for understanding the difference between 15W-generation MagSafe, ordinary Qi, USB-C, and 5W USB-A, but it is not a universal benchmark for current iPhone 16 or iPhone 17 models.

The verdict at a glance

  • Fastest for urgent charging: USB-C wired charging with a USB Power Delivery adapter is generally the least ambiguous and fastest option, especially for a 10- to 30-minute top-up.
  • Best wireless option on older MagSafe iPhones: 15W MagSafe or certified 15W Qi2. They are substantially faster than ordinary Qi1, which iPhones generally limit to 7.5W.
  • Best current wireless option: a 25W-capable MagSafe or Qi2 25W charger, but only when both the charger and the iPhone support that mode.
  • Slowest option in the original comparison: Apple’s 5W USB-A adapter.
  • Best overnight option: any reliable charger. A small speed difference matters much less when the phone is connected for several hours.

Do not compare the words MagSafe, Qi, USB-C, and USB-A as if they were equivalent speed categories. MagSafe and Qi describe charging technologies; USB-C and USB-A primarily describe connector types. The adapter and charging protocol determine how much power is actually available.

What the original iPhone 12 Pro test found

The original comparison, published by AppleInsider on December 16, 2021, used an uncased, fully depleted iPhone 12 Pro. The testers recorded the battery percentage every five minutes, cooled the phone between runs, and separately measured the power entering the MagSafe charger.

The four charging setups were:

Original iPhone 12 Pro results
Method After 10 minutes After 30 minutes Time to 100%
20W USB-C wired 17% 52% 1 hour 55 minutes
MagSafe 8% 31% 2 hours 10 minutes
7.5W Qi 3% 20% 2 hours 40 minutes
5W USB-A wired 6% 17% 3 hours 15 minutes

What that means: after 30 minutes, USB-C led MagSafe by 21 percentage points. MagSafe led ordinary Qi by 11 points and 5W USB-A by 14 points. At full charge, USB-C finished 15 minutes before MagSafe; MagSafe finished 30 minutes before Qi and 65 minutes before 5W USB-A.

The test also found that MagSafe briefly drew up to 15W at the beginning, then settled at approximately 11–12W as the phone warmed and the battery filled. That is normal. A 15W label describes a maximum charging mode, not a promise that the phone will receive 15W for the entire cycle.

What the original test did not measure

The published iPhone 12 Pro results include 10-minute, 30-minute, and full-charge readings, but not separate 50% and 80% timestamps. Those two milestones matter more than 100% for many real-world users, because charging tapers substantially near full.

A later independent Macworld comparison using an iPhone 15 Pro reported these average times:

Later iPhone 15 Pro comparison
Method To 50% To 80% To 100%
Wired charging 25 minutes 55 minutes 70 minutes
15W MagSafe or 15W Qi2 45 minutes 90 minutes 115 minutes

In that test, wired charging reached 50% 20 minutes sooner, 80% 35 minutes sooner, and 100% 45 minutes sooner than 15W MagSafe or Qi2. Macworld also found that lower-power magnetic-compatible chargers were materially slower. These are independent averages, not guarantees for every iPhone 15 Pro, charger, temperature, or software version.

What has changed since 2021?

The original comparison predates several important changes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • iPhone 15 and later use USB-C instead of Lightning, so a fast wired setup now uses a USB-C-to-USB-C cable.
  • Qi2 introduced magnetic alignment and a 15W mode for compatible phones and chargers. A 15W Qi2 charger and a 15W MagSafe charger generally produce similar wireless results when used with a supported iPhone.
  • Qi2 25W arrived in 2025. The Wireless Power Consortium announced Qi v2.2.1, branded Qi2 25W, on July 23, 2025. It raises the wireless standard beyond the original 15W Qi2 specification, but an older Qi2 charger remains a 15W charger. See the WPC Qi2 25W announcement and the WPC Qi standards overview.
  • Newer MagSafe hardware supports up to 25W peak power on supported iPhones when paired with a sufficiently powerful adapter.
  • Newer iPhones have different wireless limits. You cannot assume that every iPhone 16 model, or every charger described as magnetic, supports the same speed.

As of August 10, 2026, wired USB-C remains the safest general answer for maximum speed. However, a current 25W wireless setup is a much closer competitor than the 15W MagSafe hardware tested in 2021.

MagSafe, Made for MagSafe, magnetic-compatible, Qi, and Qi2 are not the same

MagSafe
Apple’s magnetic wireless-charging system for compatible iPhones. The magnets align the charger with the charging coil, making placement easier and enabling Apple-specific charging modes.
Made for MagSafe
An Apple-certified accessory category. Accessories with this designation can support the higher MagSafe charging modes that ordinary magnetic accessories may not.
MagSafe-compatible
A loose marketing term. It may describe a charger with magnets that only provides ordinary Qi power. Magnetic attachment alone does not prove 15W or 25W charging.
Qi
The original wireless-charging standard. Apple says iPhone 8 and later support Qi-certified wireless charging, with many Qi chargers charging iPhones at up to 7.5W. See Apple’s Qi-certified wireless charging guidance.
Qi2
A newer magnetic wireless standard developed by the Wireless Power Consortium with technology derived partly from Apple’s magnetic charging work. The original Qi2 mode was 15W; Qi2 25W is the newer Qi v2.2.1 specification.
USB-C
A connector shape, not a charging-speed guarantee. A USB-C port may be connected to a low-power adapter or a fast USB Power Delivery adapter.
USB-A
Another connector shape. Apple’s classic USB-A iPhone adapter is 5W, but third-party USB-A adapters can have higher ratings and different proprietary protocols.
USB Power Delivery
USB-PD is the wired power-negotiation standard used by modern fast-charging setups. The phone and adapter negotiate an appropriate voltage and current; the adapter’s maximum wattage is not automatically forced into the phone.

Wireless charging limits by iPhone model

The following table reflects Apple’s currently published specifications in the supplied U.S. and regional support pages. The exact model matters, particularly within the iPhone 16 family.

Maximum listed wireless charging classes
iPhone family MagSafe Qi2 Plain Qi
iPhone 8, iPhone X, XS, XR, and iPhone 11 family No magnetic MagSafe charging Not applicable Up to 7.5W
iPhone 12, 13, 14, and 15 families, excluding mini models Up to 15W Up to 15W where supported Up to 7.5W
iPhone 12 mini and 13 mini Up to 12W Model- and software-dependent Up to 7.5W
iPhone 16 and 16 Plus Up to 25W class Up to 25W listed by Apple Up to 7.5W
iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max Up to 25W class Up to 15W listed by Apple Up to 7.5W
iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max Up to 25W Up to 25W Up to 7.5W
iPhone Air Up to 20W Up to 20W Up to 7.5W
iPhone 17e Up to 15W Up to 15W Up to 7.5W

Check the exact Apple specification page for your model: iPhone 15, iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17e.

There is a qualification for the iPhone 16 rows. Apple’s broader MagSafe support page identifies the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro as reaching 22.5W peak power, while some product specification pages use up-to-25W language for the relevant family. Treat 25W as a maximum class or peak rating, not a guaranteed sustained battery-input rate. Apple’s own page also lists the iPhone 16 Plus and iPhone 16 Pro Max at up to 25W peak under its stated conditions.

Is MagSafe faster than Qi?

MagSafe is generally faster than ordinary Qi1 on a compatible iPhone. The usual comparison is up to 15W or 25W for MagSafe versus up to 7.5W for plain Qi, although real charging power varies throughout the session.

MagSafe is not automatically faster than Qi2. A 15W MagSafe charger and a certified 15W Qi2 charger are broadly similar in charging speed. Qi2’s magnetic alignment can also make it easier to maintain the correct position, especially on a stand or in a car.

25W MagSafe can be faster than 15W Qi2. That advantage exists only when the iPhone supports the 25W MagSafe mode and the charger and adapter meet Apple’s requirements.

25W MagSafe and Qi2 25W are comparable on paper. Both describe a 25W wireless-power class, but the actual charge time can differ because of firmware, thermal behavior, adapter profiles, case design, and the phone’s charging curve. Rated wattage is not a time-to-charge measurement.

Is wired USB-C faster than MagSafe?

Usually, yes. Wired USB-C has fewer conversion and transfer losses than wireless charging and is less sensitive to alignment, case thickness, and heat at the charging coil. It is particularly advantageous when the battery is nearly empty and you need a useful amount of power quickly.

Apple says iPhone 8 and later can reach approximately 50% in 30 minutes under its fast-charge conditions. For newer models, Apple says the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max can reach approximately 50% in 20 minutes with a 40W-or-higher wired adapter. Apple lists approximately 30 minutes to 50% for iPhone Air and iPhone 17e with a 20W-or-higher wired adapter. These are Apple’s controlled tests using drained preproduction phones, not guaranteed household results. See Apple’s fast-charge requirements and test conditions.

On several current iPhones, Apple advertises approximately 50% in 30 minutes for compatible 25W MagSafe charging. That makes current wireless charging much more competitive for a normal top-up, but the iPhone 17 family’s 20-minute wired claim still leaves wired charging with the clearest advantage when time is critical.

Why 50%, 80%, and 100% tell different stories

  • To 50%: a useful emergency metric. The battery accepts relatively high power while it is low, so a wired charger often shows its biggest practical advantage here.
  • To 80%: a good everyday metric. The phone has begun reducing power, and heat differences become more visible.
  • To 100%: the least useful urgent-charging metric. Charging tapers heavily near full, so the last 20% can take a disproportionate amount of the total time.

What you need for each method

Fast wired USB-C charging

  • iPhone 15 and later: a USB-C-to-USB-C cable and a USB-C Power Delivery adapter.
  • iPhone 14 and earlier: a USB-C-to-Lightning cable and a USB-C Power Delivery adapter.
  • iPhone 12 and later: Apple requires a 20W-or-higher adapter for its fast wired charging guidance.
  • iPhone 8 through 11: Apple also supports fast charging with a suitable USB-PD setup, subject to the model and Apple’s stated conditions.

A 30W, 40W, or 65W USB-C adapter will not force that wattage into the iPhone. The phone requests what it can use and limits the charging power. Apple’s USB-C and USB-PD guidance explains the general setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maximum-speed current MagSafe

For the newer 25W MagSafe mode, Apple requires:

  • a supported iPhone;
  • a newer compatible MagSafe charger;
  • a USB-C power adapter rated at least 30W;
  • an adapter capable of at least 15V/2A;
  • the charger connected to power before the iPhone is placed on it.

Apple identifies compatible newer MagSafe chargers by part numbers including A3502, A3503, A2580, and A3250. The older A2140 MagSafe charger belongs to the 15W generation, so replacing its adapter with a larger one does not turn it into a 25W charger. Check Apple’s MagSafe charging requirements and compatibility notes.

Qi2 charging

Both the iPhone and charger must support the relevant Qi2 mode. Look for:

  • Qi2 certification for the original 15W mode;
  • the Qi2 25W certification or logo for the newer 25W mode;
  • explicit compatibility with the exact iPhone model.

Do not infer speed from a product listing that says only magnetic, wireless, or MagSafe-compatible. A magnetic Qi1 charger may attach to a case while still charging at ordinary 7.5W Qi speeds.

USB-A charging

USB-A is not synonymous with 5W. Apple’s classic USB-A iPhone adapter is a 5W, 5V/1A device, which explains the slow result in the original comparison. Third-party USB-A adapters may advertise 7.5W, 10W, 12W, or more using proprietary charging protocols. Apple’s current support documentation says iPhone 15 and later are limited to 7.5W when charged from a USB-A charger.

Therefore, identify the actual USB-A adapter rather than writing simply USB-A versus USB-C. A modern USB-A charger may beat Apple’s old 5W adapter, but USB-A generally offers less predictable fast-charging behavior than a USB-C PD setup.

Why the wattage on the box does not equal charging time

There are several different power figures that are easy to confuse:

  1. Adapter output: the maximum power the wall adapter can provide, often shared between ports.
  2. Charger or puck input: the power delivered to a wireless charging accessory.
  3. Power transferred to the phone: the wireless system loses some energy during the transfer.
  4. Battery charging power: the amount the iPhone’s charging controller allows the battery to accept at that moment.

A 25W adapter does not mean the battery receives 25W. A 15W MagSafe label does not mean 15W is sustained from 0% to 100%. The original test’s initial MagSafe peak of up to 15W, followed by approximately 11–12W, demonstrates the difference between a peak figure and a charging curve.

The iPhone reduces charging power as the battery fills. It may reduce power sooner if the phone is hot, the room is warm, the case traps heat, the charger is thermally limited, or the phone is being used for demanding work. Games, camera recording, high-brightness video, navigation, processor-intensive apps, hubs, and multi-port adapters can all reduce the net charging rate. Apple says charging may pause in extreme temperatures and may limit charging above 80% when the battery becomes too warm. See Apple’s iPhone charging and temperature guidance.

How to get the maximum speed from MagSafe

  1. Confirm the iPhone model. Check whether it supports 15W, 20W, or 25W wireless charging and whether the relevant Qi2 mode is supported.
  2. Check the charger generation. Read the MagSafe charger’s model or part number. An older A2140 puck is not the same as a newer 25W-capable model.
  3. Use the correct adapter. For current maximum MagSafe speed, use a USB-C adapter rated at least 30W and supporting at least 15V/2A.
  4. Power the charger first. Connect the MagSafe puck to the adapter and wall power before attaching the iPhone.
  5. Reset a failed negotiation. If the iPhone was already attached when the charger was powered, remove the phone, wait three seconds, and place it back on the charger.
  6. Remove interference. Take out thick cases, metal plates, wallets, cards, security badges, key fobs, passports, and other objects between the phone and puck. Use a case explicitly designed for MagSafe or Qi2.
  7. Disconnect wired accessories. USB-C or Lightning accessories can change the available wireless charging limit on several iPhone models. The exact limit is model-dependent.
  8. Reduce heat. Avoid direct sun, a hot car dashboard, heavy gaming, video recording, or a thick case while charging. If the phone is hot, let it cool.
  9. Check the battery interface. In iOS 26, go to Settings → Battery to see the estimated time to a target charge level. iOS 26 can also show the estimate near the top of the Lock Screen.

On iOS 18 and later, an iPhone may display a Slow Charger message when a higher-wattage charger could improve charging. iOS 26 can display Incompatible Charger when a connected charger is not charging the phone. These messages are useful clues that the adapter, cable, charger, or connection is the bottleneck.

Common MagSafe and wireless-charging failure modes

The iPhone was attached before the puck was powered

Maximum-power negotiation may fail. Disconnect the iPhone, wait three seconds, power the charger, and attach the phone again.

The case is too thick or poorly aligned

Wireless charging requires the phone’s coil and the charger’s coil to be close and correctly aligned. A case designed for ordinary wireless charging may not align correctly with a magnetic puck. Cases with metal plates can also interfere.

A wallet or card is between the phone and charger

Remove cards, passports, key fobs, security badges, and other sensitive items. Apple warns that magnets can damage magnetic strips and RFID chips. The object can also increase the distance between the charging coils and create more heat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A cable or accessory is connected

On several models, Apple limits wireless charging to 7.5W when USB-C or Lightning accessories are connected. Newer models have different limits, so do not assume the behavior is identical across the iPhone range.

Wired and MagSafe charging are connected simultaneously

If an iPhone is connected to both MagSafe and wired power, Apple says the wired connector takes priority. Connecting both does not combine their wattages.

The phone or puck is hot

Heat is one of the most common reasons a wireless session slows or pauses. Move the setup out of direct sunlight, remove an insulating case, stop demanding apps, and let the phone cool. A slower percentage increase during a warm session does not necessarily indicate a defective charger.

Which method should you choose?

Best charging method by situation
Situation Best default Reason
Need the most battery in 10–20 minutes USB-C wired It generally provides the highest practical short-term rate and is less affected by wireless heat.
Need a convenient desk or nightstand charger MagSafe or Qi2 Magnetic alignment makes placement quick and convenient.
Have an iPhone 16 or 17 that supports 25W wireless charging Current 25W MagSafe or certified Qi2 25W It can be substantially faster than ordinary Qi and closer to wired charging.
Own an iPhone 12 through 15 15W MagSafe or certified 15W Qi2 These provide similar wireless speed; choose based on price, stand design, cases, and accessory ecosystem.
Charging overnight Any reliable method Several hours makes the difference between wireless and wired full-cycle times much less important.
Have an old Apple charger Replace a 5W USB-A adapter with USB-C PD if speed matters The adapter and cable upgrade usually improves charging more cheaply than replacing an entire wireless setup.
Charging in a car USB-C PD for speed; magnetic charging for convenience Car USB ports, hubs, and shared adapters may limit output, while heat can throttle wireless charging.
Gaming, recording video, or using navigation while charging USB-C wired It is less vulnerable to wireless thermal throttling and is easier to use continuously.

What should an iPhone owner buy?

If your priority is emergency charging

Buy or use a USB-C PD adapter and the correct cable first. For iPhone 15 and later, that means USB-C to USB-C. For iPhone 14 and earlier, it means USB-C to Lightning. A 20W-or-higher adapter is the sensible baseline for iPhone 12 and later; newer iPhone 17 models can benefit from a 40W-or-higher adapter for Apple’s approximately 20-minute 50% claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your priority is wireless convenience

Choose a certified MagSafe or Qi2 charger rather than a generic magnetic Qi accessory. For an iPhone 12 through 15, a certified 15W charger is usually the appropriate wireless target. For a supported iPhone 16 or 17, check whether the exact model supports 25W MagSafe or Qi2 25W before paying extra for a 25W charger.

If you already own a 15W MagSafe puck

It remains a useful charger. Upgrading to a newer puck may improve wireless speed on a compatible iPhone, but only if the phone supports the newer mode and you also use the required 30W-or-higher adapter. A larger adapter alone cannot upgrade an old 15W puck.

If you own an older iPhone

iPhone 8 through 11 support Qi wireless charging but do not have magnetic MagSafe charging. A magnetic ring or accessory may help with physical alignment, but it does not turn the phone into a 15W or 25W MagSafe device. Wired charging is usually the better investment if speed matters.

How to compare chargers fairly

The historical figures above should not be presented as a new iTechGuides laboratory test. A current comparison needs to separate generations and control the variables that can change the result.

Test A: repeat the historical comparison

For a direct comparison with the 2021 result, use an iPhone 12 Pro and the same classes of equipment: Apple’s 5W USB-A adapter, a 7.5W Qi pad, the original 15W-generation MagSafe charger, and Apple’s 20W USB-C adapter with a USB-C-to-Lightning cable. Keep the phone uncased, start from fully depleted, log the battery every five minutes, and allow it to cool between runs.

Test B: compare current hardware

A current test should include at least an iPhone 15 or 15 Pro, an iPhone 16 or 16 Pro with the exact Qi2 limit recorded, and an iPhone 17 or 17 Pro. Test a current 25W-capable MagSafe charger, a certified 15W Qi2 charger, a certified Qi2 25W charger, a 20W-or-higher USB-C PD charger, Apple’s 5W USB-A adapter, and a modern higher-output USB-A adapter.

Record these variables

  • exact iPhone model and storage configuration;
  • iOS version;
  • battery health and cycle condition;
  • charger model and part number;
  • adapter model, wattage, and USB-PD profiles;
  • cable type;
  • case or no-case status;
  • room temperature;
  • starting battery percentage;
  • whether the phone is powered off, in airplane mode, or actively used;
  • whether Optimized Battery Charging or a charge limit is active;
  • whether wired accessories are connected;
  • whether the adapter is shared with another device.

Run at least three trials per method and report the mean and range rather than one apparently decisive result. Record battery percentage after 5, 10, 15, and 30 minutes, plus the time to 50%, 80%, and 100%. If possible, record charger-side input wattage, phone and puck temperature, wall energy consumption, and any Slow Charger, charging-pause, or temperature warning.

Charger-side wattage must not be presented as battery charging power. Wireless transfer loses energy, and the iPhone’s controller changes the rate according to temperature and state of charge. Wall-to-battery efficiency can only be compared properly when the test measures energy at the wall and the resulting battery charge.

Bottom line

The original iPhone 12 Pro test gives a clear answer: 20W USB-C was fastest, MagSafe was second, 7.5W Qi was third, and 5W USB-A was slowest. MagSafe’s advantage was convenience plus a meaningful speed improvement over ordinary Qi and the old 5W adapter.

The current answer is not simply MagSafe versus Qi. You must identify whether the charger is ordinary Qi, 15W Qi2, Qi2 25W, older MagSafe, or newer 25W-capable MagSafe. For urgent charging, choose USB-C PD. For effortless everyday charging, choose certified MagSafe or Qi2. For newer supported iPhones, 25W wireless charging can narrow the gap with wired charging, but it still does not guarantee the fastest real-world top-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Qi2 the same as MagSafe?

No. Qi2 is a Wireless Power Consortium standard with magnetic alignment, while MagSafe is Apple’s charging system. A 15W Qi2 charger and 15W MagSafe charger can perform similarly, but certification, supported power mode, firmware, and iPhone model still matter. Qi2 25W is a newer specification and should not be confused with older 15W Qi2 chargers.

Will a 30W adapter make an old MagSafe charger charge at 25W?

No. The charger puck also has to support the newer 25W MagSafe mode. Apple’s older A2140 MagSafe charger is a 15W-generation accessory. A larger adapter cannot change its hardware capability.

Is a magnetic wireless charger automatically MagSafe or Qi2?

No. Some magnetic accessories provide only ordinary Qi charging, often limited to 7.5W on iPhone. Look for Apple MagSafe or Made for MagSafe certification, Qi2 certification, or the Qi2 25W designation.

Is a USB-C charger always faster than a USB-A charger?

Not automatically. USB-C and USB-A describe connectors, not complete charging systems. However, a USB-C PD adapter is generally the most reliable fast-wired option. Apple’s classic USB-A adapter is only 5W, and Apple says iPhone 15 and later are limited to 7.5W from USB-A chargers.

Does wireless charging damage an iPhone battery?

The supplied evidence does not establish that wireless charging inherently damages the battery. It does show that heat can reduce charging speed or temporarily pause charging. Keep the phone and charger cool and use the iPhone’s built-in charging controls rather than assuming a slower warm session means the battery is being damaged.

The Bottom Line

For the fastest short top-up, use USB-C PD. Use MagSafe or Qi2 when convenience matters, and ordinary Qi only when its lower speed is acceptable. On supported newer iPhones, current 25W MagSafe and Qi2 25W chargers are much faster than the 7.5W Qi pads of the original comparison, but their peak ratings still do not guarantee a faster charge than wired USB-C.
