Sudachi is no longer being actively developed. The Switch emulator’s developer, Jarrod Norwell, announced the halt because his time was needed for Folium, his paid iOS multi-emulator project—not because Nintendo directly shut Sudachi down.
That distinction matters. Nintendo’s legal actions and the difficult climate around Switch emulation were part of Sudachi’s history, but the documented immediate reason for ending development was the developer’s competing commitment.
What happened to Sudachi?
Sudachi’s official website added a notice saying that the project was “no longer in-development and won’t be for some time.” The notice attributed the decision to Norwell’s required work on Folium, an iOS multi-emulator application he had already been developing for more than a year.

The report identified the last Sudachi release as the version released on July 2. The surrounding chronology places that release in 2025, although the cited report does not print the year in that particular sentence.

Sudachi began as a fork of Yuzu, the Switch emulator that was shut down after Nintendo’s lawsuit. It aimed to add improvements to Yuzu’s final release, and it supported Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows. A source mirror describes the project as being written in C++.
Why saying “Nintendo killed Sudachi” is inaccurate
Nintendo absolutely forms part of the background. After Yuzu’s shutdown, Nintendo sent DMCA notices to several related projects. Sudachi’s Discord and GitHub pages were also reported as having been shut down, with later rehosting on private servers. Norwell had previously described the Switch-emulation environment as “very unsafe and unpleasant.”
Those facts help explain why development was difficult. They do not change the stated immediate reason for the August 2025 decision: Norwell needed to focus on Folium.
The timeline makes the distinction clear:
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| After Yuzu’s shutdown | Sudachi and other Yuzu forks faced Nintendo-related DMCA pressure and disruption to project pages. |
| July 2, 2025 | The final Sudachi release was identified in later reporting as the version released on this date. |
| August 25, 2025 | Sudachi was reported as no longer in development, with Norwell citing his work on Folium. |
| February 13, 2026 | Nintendo was reported to have sent further DMCA notices to inactive Sudachi and Skyline repositories on GitHub. |
Therefore, the February 2026 GitHub notices cannot be the event that ended Sudachi development. The project had already been declared inactive roughly six months earlier.

What happens to the final Sudachi build?
The 2025 report said the final version would remain available, and the developer recommended that users move to Eden, a fork described on Sudachi’s homepage as making “real, significant changes.” Norwell later contributed to Eden.
However, the available evidence does not verify a current official download location for Sudachi’s final build. It also does not verify whether that build remains downloadable as of August 7, 2026. Be cautious with third-party download pages claiming to offer “the latest Sudachi,” particularly when they provide modified installers, bundled firmware, or unknown executables.
A source mirror on git.suyu.dev is not an active development channel. Its README says that compatibility information is unavailable, contributions will not be accepted, and pull requests will be closed. Its visible source history ends in April 2024, including a commit dated April 13, 2024. That repository history should not be confused with the date of the final binary release.

No such conclusion follows from Sudachi’s closure. Nintendo’s legal theory concerns circumvention of technological protection measures, including the console cryptographic keys used to decrypt games. The reporting says Sudachi, Citron, and Eden did not bundle those keys with their emulators; users were described as needing to modify their own consoles and import their own keys and firmware.

The Yuzu case also did not produce a court ruling that emulation itself is illegal. Nintendo and Yuzu reached an out-of-court settlement, so that case left the broader legal status of emulation unresolved.
That does not make every use of an emulator lawful. Copyright, anti-circumvention, game ownership, firmware extraction, and local law can all matter. It does mean that “Nintendo proved emulation is illegal” is an overstatement unsupported by the cited court outcome.
What should Sudachi users do now?
- Do not expect updates. Sudachi should be treated as an archived project, not an actively maintained emulator.
- Do not assume every download is genuine. The current official availability of the final build has not been verified. Avoid installers that bundle keys, firmware, games, password-protected archives, or unrelated utilities.
- Keep your expectations realistic. An abandoned emulator may continue to run existing games, but new operating-system releases, graphics drivers, controller hardware, and game updates can expose bugs that will never be fixed.
- Check the legal position where you live. Use only games, firmware, and console-derived data you are legally entitled to use, and do not treat an emulator as permission to download copyrighted game files.
- Research an active alternative separately. Norwell recommended Eden, and the available reporting describes it as a project receiving significant changes. That is not a guarantee of compatibility, safety, or legal status, so users should verify its current official channels before installing anything.
The bottom line on Sudachi’s shutdown
Sudachi ended because its solo developer moved his attention to Folium. Nintendo’s lawsuits, DMCA notices, disrupted project infrastructure, and the hostile Switch-emulation environment were important context, but they were not given as the immediate cause of the development halt.
There is also a second, separate fact: Nintendo later targeted inactive Sudachi repositories on GitHub in February 2026. That action shows that legal pressure around Switch-emulator code continued after development stopped. It does not rewrite why Sudachi was discontinued in August 2025.

The Bottom Line
Sudachi was discontinued because Jarrod Norwell shifted his time to Folium, not because Nintendo directly ended the project. Nintendo pressure was still part of the wider story, and Nintendo later sent DMCA notices involving inactive Sudachi repositories, but those later notices did not cause the earlier development halt.
