The fastest way to harden a home network is to secure the router itself, then reduce what can be reached through it. Change both default credentials, use WPA3—or WPA2-Personal with AES when necessary—install current firmware, disable unnecessary remote access and WPS, review UPnP and port forwarding, separate guests and smart-home devices, and audit connected equipment.
No router can be made impossible to hack. These steps reduce the likelihood of unauthorized access and limit the damage if a device or account is compromised. Menu names vary by manufacturer, internet provider, model, hardware revision, firmware, and region, but the security principles are consistent.
Start with an inventory: identify the router before changing anything
Find the router’s manufacturer, exact model, hardware revision, and current firmware version. The information may be printed on the device, shown in its administration page or mobile app, or listed in your internet provider’s equipment portal.

Use the manufacturer’s official support page or your ISP’s support portal for firmware and instructions. Do not download firmware from an unofficial mirror. Firmware files can differ by model, hardware revision, region, and sometimes ISP variant; installing the wrong file can damage the router or leave it unusable.

Before making changes, record the current settings if practical. At minimum, note the existing Wi‑Fi name, connected devices, and any port-forwarding rules that you intentionally use. If the router offers a configuration-backup function, use it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Also check the router’s support status. Replacement is the safer choice if it no longer receives security updates, supports only obsolete wireless-security standards, has an unresolved critical vulnerability, or cannot provide basic exposure controls.
1. Change both important passwords
There are two credentials to change, and they protect different things:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute| Credential | What it controls | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Wi‑Fi passphrase | Which devices may join the wireless network | Replace the factory passphrase with a long, unique one |
| Administrator password | Who may change router settings | Replace the factory administrator credential with a different, unique password |
Changing only the Wi‑Fi password is a common mistake. If the administrator password remains at its factory value—or is reused elsewhere—an attacker who reaches the administration interface may be able to change the entire network configuration.
Use a long passphrase rather than a short password filled with predictable substitutions. Do not use a person’s name, address, phone number, router brand, or other household information in the network name or password. Never reuse either credential for email, banking, cloud storage, or another router.
A password manager for unique Wi‑Fi passwords can make it easier to create and store separate router and network credentials, but the manager is only a convenience and credential-hygiene tool; it does not harden the router by itself.
Should you hide the Wi‑Fi name?
Usually, no. Hiding the SSID does not encrypt the network or prevent a determined observer from identifying it. The SSID identifies the network; the passphrase and authentication protocol control access. A neutral SSID can be useful because it avoids advertising your name, address, or router model, but hiding it is not a substitute for WPA3 or WPA2-AES.

2. Choose the strongest compatible wireless security
Open the router’s actual wireless or Wi‑Fi security settings. Use these options in order:
- WPA3-Personal when the router and the devices that need to connect support it.
- WPA2-Personal with AES when older devices prevent a WPA3-only configuration.
- WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode as a migration option when supported and necessary.
WPA3-Personal uses SAE authentication, which improves resistance to password-guessing attacks compared with older approaches. WPA2-Personal with AES remains a practical and supported fallback for many homes when it is configured with a unique, strong passphrase.
Avoid WEP, legacy WPA, and TKIP. If an old device requires one of those obsolete modes, isolating or replacing the device is safer than weakening the security of the entire household network.

Mixed mode is not the same as WPA3-only: older clients can still connect using WPA2. A WPA3-capable phone or laptop also does not prove that the network is using WPA3. The router’s setting determines which mode is negotiated.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Update router firmware—and enable verified automatic updates
Firmware updates can repair security vulnerabilities as well as add features or change the interface. Check the manufacturer’s support page or ISP portal for the exact model and hardware revision. ISP-provided routers may receive updates automatically from the provider.
If the router offers a genuine, verified automatic-update option, enabling it generally reduces the risk of missing an important patch. Registering the device for manufacturer or ISP update notifications is also useful.
Safe manual-update checklist
- Confirm the exact model and hardware revision.
- Confirm the geographic region and ISP variant, if applicable.
- Download only from the official manufacturer or ISP source.
- Connect to the router by Ethernet if the vendor recommends a wired update.
- Do not unplug or power off the router during the update.
- Wait for the router to finish rebooting before testing it.
- Review the security settings afterward; a reset or major upgrade can restore defaults or move settings.
If an update fails, do not repeatedly interrupt the device. Follow the manufacturer’s recovery procedure for that model. A configuration backup may help, but only restore it if the vendor says it is compatible with the new firmware.
4. Turn off internet-facing remote administration
Disable remote administration, remote management, or similarly named settings unless you have a specific need to manage the router from outside the home. Internet-facing administration exposes the router’s control panel beyond the local network and increases its attack surface.
Do not assume that an authenticated mobile app or vendor cloud account is identical to an exposed web administration port. Manufacturers implement these features differently, and the relevant controls and risks can differ. Review what the app actually enables and keep the router’s administrator credential unique.
If remote administration is genuinely required:
- Restrict access to a specific trusted source or address where the router supports that control.
- Use a strong, unique administrator password.
- Enable multi-factor authentication for the linked router account if available.
- Use the vendor’s supported secure remote-access method rather than exposing a generic administration page.
- Turn the feature off again when it is no longer needed.
5. Disable WPS, especially PIN-based WPS
Wi‑Fi Protected Setup can simplify pairing, but its PIN mechanism has a history of brute-force weaknesses. For a hardened home network, disable WPS—particularly PIN-based WPS—and leave it disabled permanently.
Some households may temporarily use push-button WPS to connect a difficult device and then turn it off immediately. If you do this, verify that the router’s WPS status is disabled afterward. WPS is not a replacement for WPA3 or a strong passphrase.
6. Keep the firewall on and remove unnecessary exposure
Make sure the router’s built-in firewall is enabled. It is an additional layer between the public internet and devices inside the home network, not a replacement for endpoint security.
Recommended Free Tools
Review port forwarding and delete rules you no longer need. A forwarding rule is not automatically malicious, but every open inbound service expands the attack surface. Avoid exposing router administration, file sharing, cameras, remote-desktop services, or other management interfaces directly to the public internet unless you understand the design and its maintenance requirements.

For remote access, prefer a vendor-supported secure access method or a properly configured VPN over publishing an administrative service. CISA’s general exposure-reduction principle is useful here: identify services reachable from the internet and remove those that are not necessary.
7. Review UPnP instead of enabling it blindly
Universal Plug and Play can allow games, applications, cameras, and other devices to request automatic port mappings. That can make legitimate applications work with less setup, but it can also create internet-facing rules without a person deliberately configuring each one.
Disabling UPnP reduces automatic exposure, but it may affect gaming, video calls, media servers, or other applications. If you leave it enabled, periodically inspect the router’s port-mapping table. Remove mappings created by devices you no longer use and investigate rules you do not recognize.
After changing UPnP, test the applications your household actually relies on. Do not treat either “UPnP always safe” or “UPnP always dangerous” as a complete answer; the decision depends on the devices, applications, and exposure you are willing to manage.
8. Separate guests and less-trusted smart devices
Create a guest network for visitors. This means you do not need to give guests the primary Wi‑Fi passphrase, and a compromised guest device is less likely to reach computers and other primary devices.
For cameras, plugs, televisions, speakers, appliances, and other smart-home products, create a separate IoT network if the router supports one. A separate SSID is useful only if the router actually blocks access from that network to the private LAN. Check for settings such as “allow guests to access local network” and leave local-network access off unless you have a deliberate reason to permit it.
Segmentation reduces risk; it is not a guarantee. Change every IoT device’s default credentials, enable multi-factor authentication where available, install vendor updates, and remove devices that are no longer supported. A camera or smart appliance with weak security can still be a liability even when it is not on the primary network.
9. Audit connected devices and router accounts
Open the router’s connected-client or device list and look for phones, computers, printers, consoles, cameras, televisions, and smart-home products. An unfamiliar entry may be a legitimate device with a confusing hostname, but it may also indicate that someone knows the Wi‑Fi password or that an account has been compromised.
For each device you cannot explain:
- Check whether it belongs to a household member, visitor, appliance, printer, or ISP service.
- Check the device’s MAC address or hardware identifier against the router’s entry where possible.
- Remove or block it if the router provides that option.
- Change the Wi‑Fi passphrase if unauthorized access remains plausible.
- Reconnect trusted devices deliberately rather than restoring an unknown configuration.
While auditing, review administrator accounts and linked cloud accounts, DNS settings, VPN settings, firewall rules, remote-management settings, UPnP mappings, and port-forwarding rules. Unexpected DNS or forwarding changes deserve particular attention because they can redirect traffic or expose internal services.

Router hardening cannot compensate for an infected laptop, an unpatched phone, or a poorly secured camera. Every connected endpoint should have current software, unique credentials, available security features enabled, and multi-factor authentication where offered.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When to replace the router
A newer router is not automatically a secure router. Replace the current device when it fails a fundamental security requirement, such as:
- It supports only WEP or legacy WPA.
- It lacks WPA2-Personal with AES or WPA3 after a firmware check.
- The vendor or ISP no longer provides security updates.
- It has an unresolved critical vulnerability.
- Internet-facing administration cannot be disabled or adequately restricted.
- It cannot create a guest or IoT network when that separation is important to your household.
WPA3 is desirable, but a supported WPA2-AES router does not need to be replaced solely because it lacks WPA3. Current firmware, unique credentials, careful exposure controls, and sensible device separation remain important protections.
If you do need a replacement, compare a WPA3 Wi‑Fi router or a Wi‑Fi 6 router with WPA3 by its security features—not by the Wi‑Fi generation number alone. Before buying, verify the exact model’s firmware-support policy, automatic-update behavior, WPA3/WPA2 compatibility, guest and IoT controls, firewall options, remote-management controls, and regional or ISP compatibility. Wi‑Fi 6 by itself does not guarantee good security, and this article does not independently test or endorse a particular model.
A practical 30-minute router-security checklist
- Record the manufacturer, model, hardware revision, firmware version, and ISP variant.
- Check official support status and install the correct firmware.
- Change the administrator password.
- Change the Wi‑Fi passphrase to a long, unique value.
- Set WPA3-Personal, or WPA2-Personal with AES if required by older clients.
- Disable WEP, legacy WPA, TKIP, and permanent WPS.
- Disable internet-facing remote administration.
- Confirm the router firewall is enabled.
- Review UPnP and delete unnecessary port mappings.
- Delete obsolete port-forwarding rules.
- Create guest and, where useful, IoT networks.
- Check that guest or IoT clients cannot reach the private LAN unless deliberately permitted.
- Audit connected devices, administrator accounts, DNS, VPN, firewall, and cloud settings.
- Update and secure every device connected to the network.
What a VPN can—and cannot—do
A VPN can help protect traffic when a laptop or phone is using untrusted public Wi‑Fi. It does not update a home router, fix weak WPA settings, remove an exposed port, isolate an IoT device, or secure every device on the home network. Treat a VPN as an endpoint and public-network privacy measure, not as a substitute for router maintenance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is WPA2 still safe for a home router?
WPA2-Personal with AES remains a practical fallback when WPA3 is unavailable or older devices cannot use it. Use a long, unique passphrase, current firmware, and strong exposure controls. Do not use WEP, legacy WPA, or TKIP.
Does hiding the SSID stop hackers?
No. Hiding the network name does not provide encryption or replace authentication. Use WPA3 or WPA2-AES with a unique passphrase instead. A neutral, non-identifying SSID is reasonable, but hiding it is not a security control that solves unauthorized access.
Should WPS be turned off?
Yes, particularly PIN-based WPS. WPS can introduce brute-force risk. If push-button WPS is used temporarily for a difficult device, disable it again immediately and verify its status in the router settings.
Should UPnP be disabled?
Disabling UPnP reduces automatic port exposure, but it can break legitimate applications such as some games or media services. If it remains enabled, inspect the port-mapping table regularly and remove mappings you no longer need.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do I need a new router if mine does not support WPA3?
Not necessarily. A supported router using WPA2-Personal with AES can still be a reasonable choice. Replace it if it lacks current security updates, supports only obsolete security modes, cannot disable remote administration, or lacks network-separation features you need.
Can a VPN secure my home router?
No. A VPN can protect a device on untrusted public Wi‑Fi, but it does not replace router firmware updates, strong Wi‑Fi and administrator credentials, firewall settings, or guest and IoT separation.
The Bottom Line
Secure the router in layers: update it, replace both factory credentials, use WPA3 or WPA2-AES, disable unnecessary remote access and WPS, control UPnP and port forwarding, separate guests and IoT devices, and keep endpoints current. Then revisit the settings periodically—router security is maintenance, not a one-time switch.
