Choose the Audeze Maxwell if your priorities are sound quality, microphone clarity and the longest possible single-charge battery life. Choose the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless if you need active noise cancellation (ANC), Transparency Mode, simultaneous Bluetooth and game audio, hot-swappable batteries or a base station that can switch between two USB-C systems.
Neither headset wins every category. The Maxwell’s 90 mm planar magnetic drivers and beamforming microphone give it the stronger audio-first case, while the Nova Pro Wireless is the more flexible everyday system for shared rooms, travel and multi-device setups. The right choice depends on which compromises you are willing to make.
At a glance: which headset fits your priorities?
| Priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Highest-fidelity game and music sound | Audeze Maxwell | Its 90 mm planar magnetic drivers are designed for strong bass with low distortion, and comparative testing rates it above the Nova Pro Wireless overall for audio. |
| Clearer voice chat in noisy surroundings | Audeze Maxwell | Its detachable boom uses a beamforming microphone array and performs better overall in comparative microphone testing. |
| Noise blocking and hearing the room quickly | SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless | It combines ANC with a Transparency Mode; the Maxwell is not documented as an ANC headset. |
| Continuous use without waiting to charge | SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless | Two hot-swappable batteries let you charge one while using the other. |
| Longest uninterrupted session on one charge | Audeze Maxwell | Audeze advertises up to 90 hours, while another official specification says over 80 hours at 80 dBA. |
| Switching between two wired systems | SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless | Its dual-USB-C base station is built for quick system switching. |
| Bluetooth features and codec choice | Audeze Maxwell | Bluetooth 5.3 supports multipoint, LE Audio, LC3, LC3plus, LDAC, AAC and SBC. |
These are capability differences, not a universal ranking. Comfort, platform compatibility and the way you use a headset every day can outweigh a specification advantage.

What the two headsets are
SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless
The Nova Pro Wireless is a wireless gaming system built around a dual-USB-C base station. The station handles the 2.4 GHz game connection, lets you change between two connected systems and provides a place to keep a spare battery. The headset also has Bluetooth, ANC, Transparency Mode and a retractable bidirectional ClearCast microphone. SteelSeries says the microphone can provide up to 25 dB of noise reduction and that the headset supports Sonar Advanced Spatial Audio.

This design prioritizes control and adaptability. You can keep a console and a computer connected to the base station, take a phone call over Bluetooth while game audio continues, and replace a depleted battery rather than stopping to recharge the headset.
Audeze Maxwell
The Maxwell is an audio-focused wireless headset using 90 mm planar magnetic drivers. It has Bluetooth 5.3, a detachable boom microphone with beamforming and a large internal battery. Audeze describes the battery as offering “class-leading 90-hour battery life” on its main product page. A separate official listing specifies more than 80 hours of wireless playback at 80 dBA, so the published figure depends on the stated test condition.
Maxwell is sold in platform-specific wireless versions. Check whether a listing is the PlayStation or Xbox edition before ordering; the edition determines the included wireless platform support. Bluetooth remains available for phones and other compatible devices.

Sound quality: Maxwell has the stronger hardware case
Planar magnetic drivers are the Maxwell’s main advantage. In comparative testing, its drivers can produce more bass while keeping distortion lower than common dynamic-driver designs. RTINGS rates the Maxwell above the Nova Pro Wireless overall for sound performance. That makes the Maxwell the safer choice when you listen to music, care about tonal accuracy or want game effects to retain texture at high volume.
The Nova Pro Wireless is not a poor-sounding headset. Its appeal is the processing around the drivers: SteelSeries Sonar provides extensive EQ and spatial-audio customization. Players who like to create separate profiles for footsteps, cinematic games, music and voice chat may prefer that software toolkit, even if the Maxwell has the more capable underlying driver design.
Do not treat “planar” as a guarantee that every listener will prefer Maxwell’s tuning. Equalization, game mix, source quality and personal fit all affect what you hear. The defensible distinction is that Maxwell offers the better measured audio foundation, while Nova offers more software-centered ways to shape its presentation.

Microphone quality: Maxwell is clearer in difficult rooms
The Maxwell’s detachable boom microphone uses a beamforming array. Comparative testing finds it clearer overall than the Nova Pro Wireless microphone, particularly when there is background noise. That difference matters for open-plan rooms, mechanical keyboards, fans and group calls where intelligibility is more important than simply having a microphone available.
The Nova uses a retractable bidirectional ClearCast microphone. SteelSeries claims up to 25 dB of noise reduction, and the retractable design means there is nothing detachable to misplace when you are listening without voice chat. It is convenient for casual calls and console chat, but the available comparative results favor Maxwell for voice fidelity and noisy-condition performance.
Maxwell’s boom is detachable rather than retractable. If you frequently move between music listening and gaming, decide whether removing and storing the boom is preferable to sliding Nova’s microphone into the earcup.
Noise control and awareness
When ANC is the deciding feature
The Nova Pro Wireless includes active noise cancellation. ANC is useful for low, steady sounds such as air conditioning, train rumble or an office HVAC system. It gives the Nova a practical advantage for travel and shared spaces where passive isolation alone is not enough.
When you need to hear the room
Transparency Mode feeds outside sound back into the Nova’s earcups, so you can hear a conversation, a doorbell or a nearby safety warning without removing the headset. Switching between ANC and Transparency is faster than repeatedly taking a headset off.
What Maxwell does not provide
The original Maxwell documentation does not list ANC. Do not buy it expecting an electronic noise-cancellation mode; its noise control comes from the physical seal and the headset’s audio design. That can still be sufficient in a quiet room, but it is a different use case from Nova’s active modes.

Battery life and charging
Maxwell: maximum time from one charge
Audeze publishes a 90-hour battery-life claim for Maxwell. Another official specification says “over 80 hrs wireless playback @ 80dBA,” which adds a playback level and uses different wording. Treat both as manufacturer figures rather than a guarantee for every volume, codec and wireless mode. Even the lower published figure represents several long sessions before you need a charger.
Nova Pro Wireless: no planned downtime
The Nova uses two hot-swappable batteries. GamesRadar lists up to 30 hours per battery when using 2.4 GHz wireless with ANC turned off. In practice, the important feature is the swap: keep one battery in the headset, place the other in the base station to charge, and exchange them when needed. Battery life changes with ANC, wireless mode and usage, so the 30-hour figure is specifically qualified by that test setup.
Choose Maxwell when you want to charge rarely. Choose Nova when uninterrupted use matters more than the number of hours any single battery can deliver.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWireless connections, Bluetooth and platform support
Nova’s base-station workflow
The Nova Pro Wireless base station accepts two USB-C system connections. That arrangement is useful when a computer and a console share one desk: select the active input at the station instead of unplugging a cable. The headset can also run Bluetooth at the same time as game audio, allowing phone audio or a call to coexist with the game connection.
Maxwell’s Bluetooth 5.3 feature set
Maxwell supports Bluetooth 5.3 with multipoint, LE Audio, LC3, LC3plus, LDAC, AAC and SBC. Multipoint is useful when you want the headset paired with two Bluetooth devices, while the codec list gives compatible phones and computers more options than a basic SBC-only connection. Your source device must support a given codec for it to be used.
Verify the platform edition
Before purchase, confirm the exact PlayStation or Xbox edition. Wireless dongle compatibility is platform-specific, and a listing for the wrong edition may not provide the connection you need. Also check the current package contents and firmware requirements because retailers can mix regional or revised listings under similar names.

Controls, software and daily operation
Nova’s value is concentrated in its system-level controls: the base station, simultaneous Bluetooth, ANC and Transparency, plus Sonar processing. It suits a desk where several sources are connected and where you regularly change EQ or spatial profiles.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Maxwell’s value is concentrated in the acoustic platform and long battery. Its simpler physical setup can be preferable if you want to connect a dongle, pair Bluetooth and start playing without maintaining a base-station workflow. The trade-off is that you give up Nova’s dedicated ANC, Transparency and hot-swap system.
For either headset, keep firmware and companion software current, confirm the correct playback device in your operating system and test microphone input before an important call. Wireless headsets can appear connected while a computer is still sending audio to speakers or a monitor.
Comfort and fit: treat this as an individual decision
The two models use different physical designs and have no controlled, directly comparable comfort result for every head shape in the available evidence. Head width, glasses, hair, clamp pressure, ear shape and how many hours you play can change the outcome.
When comfort is uncertain, buy from a seller with a clear return policy and use the first session as a fit check. Test the headset for at least the length of a normal gaming session, wear your usual glasses if applicable, and check whether the earcups remain sealed when you turn your head. Do not infer comfort from another person’s review or from driver technology alone.
Which is better for competitive FPS?
There is no evidence-based universal esports winner here. The Maxwell gives you planar-driver detail, lower measured distortion and the stronger microphone result. The Nova gives you Sonar’s spatial and EQ toolkit, fast source switching and the ability to hear your surroundings with Transparency Mode.
Best Value

Pick Maxwell if positional information sounds clearer to you in an unprocessed or lightly equalized mix and you also value voice quality. Pick Nova if you already use Sonar profiles, need to switch between systems or play in a room where awareness of people and sounds outside the game is important. In either case, consistent volume, a good fit and a properly configured game mix matter more than a brand label.
Price, availability and value
No single stable price applies across regions, platform editions, retailers or dates. Promotions and stock change, and the two products can be listed with different accessories. Compare the current price in your country only after confirming the edition and included wireless hardware.
Value follows your usage pattern. Maxwell’s long battery and stronger audio and microphone performance can justify a higher purchase price for someone who listens to music daily or spends long periods in voice chat. Nova’s base station, two batteries, ANC and simultaneous Bluetooth can be worth more to a multi-device household even if you rarely use its maximum battery capacity.
How to choose before you buy
- Identify your primary platform. For Maxwell, select the matching PlayStation or Xbox edition. For Nova, make sure your systems can use the base station’s USB-C connections.
- Decide whether ANC is essential. If you need active cancellation or a quick Transparency mode, choose Nova; Maxwell is not documented as an ANC headset.
- Choose your battery priority. Select Maxwell for the longest single charge. Select Nova if swapping a charged battery is more useful than waiting for a recharge.
- Rank audio and microphone quality. If these are your first priorities, Maxwell has the stronger comparative results. If extensive Sonar EQ and spatial customization matter more, Nova may fit better.
- Check your device mix. Nova is designed for two USB-C systems and simultaneous Bluetooth. Maxwell is the better match when Bluetooth 5.3 multipoint and codec support are the main requirements.
- Confirm return terms. Comfort is individual, so make sure you can return the headset if the clamp, seal or microphone position does not suit you.
Strengths and trade-offs
| Headset | Key strengths | Important trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Audeze Maxwell | 90 mm planar magnetic drivers; stronger comparative sound rating; clearer microphone in noisy conditions; very long published battery life; Bluetooth 5.3 with multipoint and modern codecs. | No documented ANC or Transparency Mode; detachable rather than retractable microphone; platform-specific wireless editions; no hot-swappable battery system. |
| SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless | ANC and Transparency Mode; dual-USB-C base station; simultaneous Bluetooth and game audio; hot-swappable batteries; Sonar Advanced Spatial Audio; retractable microphone. | Single-battery endurance is lower than Maxwell’s published figure; comparative sound and microphone results favor Maxwell; battery estimate depends on settings such as ANC. |
Final recommendation
Buy the Audeze Maxwell when your definition of a better gaming headset starts with high-fidelity sound, a clearer boom microphone and long stretches between charges. Its planar drivers and published battery figures make it the audio-first choice.
Buy the SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless when your headset must manage a room and several devices as well as a game. ANC, Transparency Mode, simultaneous Bluetooth, dual-system switching and hot-swappable batteries solve practical problems that Maxwell does not target.
For competitive FPS, choose according to those same priorities rather than expecting a universal winner: Maxwell for driver detail and voice quality, Nova for Sonar customization and connectivity flexibility.
