Short answer: You can add removable storage with a microSD card or replace the internal drive with a single-sided M.2 2230 SSD. You cannot perform a documented, owner-facing RAM upgrade: both LCD and OLED Steam Deck specifications list 16 GB of onboard LPDDR5 memory, with no user-replaceable module or procedure. A microSD card requires no case opening; an SSD replacement does, and you must restore or re-image SteamOS afterward.
Storage and memory are different upgrades
“Memory” can mean two different things in everyday discussions. Storage is the space where SteamOS, games, screenshots and other files are kept. The Steam Deck’s storage can be expanded externally or replaced internally. RAM is the working memory used while games and applications run. It affects what software can keep active, but it is not a removable card in the Steam Deck.
Valve lists 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM in the current OLED technical specification and also lists 16 GB of RAM for the LCD hardware. Those specifications describe the memory as onboard. Neither provides a supported procedure for replacing or adding a RAM module. That makes RAM a fixed planning constraint for ordinary owners; it is not the same kind of upgrade as adding a microSD card or changing an SSD. This does not establish what a specialist might attempt with board-level equipment, only that Valve documents no owner upgrade path.

| Option | What changes | What you must do | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| microSD card | Adds removable game and file storage | Insert a compatible card and configure it in SteamOS | No case opening; performance depends on the card, and no comparative benchmark is established here |
| Internal SSD replacement | Replaces the built-in storage device | Open the Deck, install a single-sided M.2 2230 SSD, then recover or re-image SteamOS | More capacity in the internal drive, but disassembly and software recovery are required |
| RAM change | Nothing documented for owners | No supported user procedure exists | Treat the installed 16 GB LPDDR5 as fixed when deciding which model to buy |
The right choice depends less on a theoretical maximum and more on whether you want a reversible, low-risk addition or are prepared to open the hardware and rebuild its software.

Can you upgrade Steam Deck RAM?
LCD and OLED models both have onboard memory
Valve’s LCD hardware information lists 16 GB of RAM, and the current OLED technical specification identifies 16 GB LPDDR5 at 6400 MT/s. In both cases, the memory is onboard rather than presented as a user-accessible SO-DIMM or other plug-in module.
There is no Valve-documented RAM replacement guide, slot, or supported upgrade kit. Do not interpret the absence of a procedure as proof that no technician could ever work on the chips; it means an owner should not plan a RAM swap as a normal maintenance task. If a game needs more working memory, the practical remedies are to adjust that game’s settings, close other software, or use a device with a different memory configuration—not to open a standard Steam Deck and add RAM.
What extra storage can and cannot do
More storage gives you room for additional games and files. It does not increase the Deck’s 16 GB of working memory. Conversely, freeing storage space does not create additional RAM. Keeping these roles separate prevents buying an SSD or microSD card in the expectation that it will solve a memory-limit problem.

Adding storage without opening the case: microSD
Compatibility documented by Valve
Valve states that all Steam Deck models support storage expansion through microSD cards. The OLED technical specification identifies a UHS-I microSD interface and compatibility with SD, SDHC and SDXC cards. That is the documented format and interface boundary for choosing a card.
Those specifications do not establish a universal game-loading speed, a particular card’s endurance, or parity with the internal SSD. Card quality and game behavior can vary, so avoid treating a capacity label or a retailer’s speed claim as a measured Steam Deck benchmark.

Install and format a card
- Shut down or put the Deck in a safe idle state. If the card is already in use, close the game and return to the SteamOS interface before removing it.
- Insert the microSD card fully into the slot. Do not force it; the contacts and spring mechanism should engage smoothly.
- Open SteamOS storage settings. From the Steam menu, go to Settings, then Storage. SteamOS should show the card as an available storage location.
- Format the card when SteamOS offers that action. Formatting erases existing contents, so copy anything you need elsewhere first. Use the format command shown by your installed SteamOS version rather than assuming a card prepared for another device is ready for game installation.
- Choose the install location when needed. In Storage, select the internal drive or the microSD card as the destination for future downloads. Individual game properties can also provide a move option when more than one library location is available.
A microSD card is removable, so it is useful for rotating libraries or moving games between compatible devices. Removing it while a game or file operation is active can corrupt data; close software and use SteamOS’s eject or shutdown workflow where available.
Replacing the internal SSD
The physical drive format matters
Both the LCD and OLED replacement guides from iFixit specify a single-sided M.2 2230 SSD. “M.2” describes a family of physical sizes and keying arrangements; it does not mean every longer M.2 drive will fit. A 2230 drive is approximately 22 mm wide and 30 mm long, and the single-sided requirement is part of the fit described by the guides.
Do not select a 2242, 2260 or 2280 drive simply because it is also labeled M.2. Confirm the 2230 length and single-sided construction in the drive’s actual specification before opening the Deck. The reviewed material does not establish a maximum supported replacement capacity, a particular model’s reliability, or comparative loading times.
LCD replacement: preparation and recovery
The LCD guide is a model-specific procedure. Before opening an LCD Deck, iFixit recommends reducing the battery charge below 25 percent, removing the microSD card, powering down and disconnecting cables. The guide also notes that Valve recommends enabling BIOS battery storage mode before internal repairs. Follow the guide’s screw, shield, battery and drive steps in its published order; do not substitute an OLED teardown sequence.
After the new drive is installed, the Deck’s original operating-system installation is no longer available on that device. The LCD guide directs you to Valve’s Steam Deck recovery instructions to restore or re-image SteamOS. Plan for a recovery computer, the required removable recovery media and enough time to reinstall system software and redownload games. Files that existed only on the old internal drive are not preserved by the physical swap.

OLED replacement: use the OLED guide
The OLED model has its own iFixit SSD replacement guide. It also identifies a single-sided M.2 2230 SSD and points to Valve’s recovery guidance after the hardware change. OLED internal parts and cable routing are not a reason to copy the LCD procedure line for line.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Valve has described OLED internal components as easier to access while qualifying its repair and modification discussion for trained professionals. That is encouragement to use the correct documented procedure, not a promise that the job is risk-free for every owner. Follow the OLED guide’s sequence, precautions and connector handling instructions.
What the replacement process involves
- Identify the exact model. Confirm whether the device is LCD or OLED before downloading a repair guide or ordering a drive.
- Back up personal data. Save screenshots, documents and any files that are not synchronized elsewhere. A new SSD starts without the old internal contents.
- Prepare the device. Power it down, unplug accessories, remove the microSD card and reduce the battery below 25 percent for the LCD procedure. Consider the BIOS battery storage mode recommendation noted by iFixit.
- Open the back cover with the model’s guide. Use the specified precision drivers and opening tools. Keep screws organized; forcing a panel or connector can damage the enclosure or board.
- Disconnect power before removing the drive. The guide’s battery and shielding steps are safety-critical. Do not work around the SSD with the battery still connected if the procedure instructs you to isolate it.
- Install only a single-sided M.2 2230 SSD. Seat the replacement drive exactly as shown and reinstall its retaining screw, shield and any other parts identified by the guide.
- Reassemble and start recovery media. Use Valve’s Steam Deck recovery instructions to restore or re-image SteamOS. The recovery process is separate from the physical installation.
- Reinstall games and restore files. Reconnect to your network, sign in, select library locations and copy back personal data from your backup.
The guides are instructions for two different hardware layouts. If a screw, shield, connector or screen image in the guide does not match your Deck, stop and verify the model rather than improvising.
LCD and OLED capacity context
Valve’s LCD hardware page lists configurations with 64 GB eMMC, 256 GB NVMe SSD and 512 GB NVMe SSD storage. The current OLED technical specification lists 512 GB and 1 TB NVMe configurations, along with its 16 GB LPDDR5 onboard memory and microSD slot.
These are configuration references, not a guarantee that every tier is currently sold in every region. Product availability changes, so check the exact LCD or OLED model and Valve’s current manufacturer information before treating an older capacity as a current retail option. Regardless of the built-in tier, Valve documents microSD expansion across Steam Deck models.

Which upgrade should you choose?
Choose microSD when you want the least disruption
- You want extra room without opening the Deck.
- You prefer storage that can be removed or replaced later.
- You are comfortable selecting a card that meets the documented UHS-I, SD, SDHC or SDXC requirements.
- You do not need to alter the installed operating-system drive.
This is the straightforward path for expanding a game library. It does not change RAM and does not provide a documented performance match to the internal SSD.
Choose an SSD replacement when internal capacity is the priority
- You need more built-in space and accept a teardown.
- You can identify the correct LCD or OLED guide and a single-sided M.2 2230 drive.
- You have a backup and a plan for SteamOS recovery or re-imaging.
- You are prepared to handle battery, connector and screw-management precautions.
This route is substantially more involved than inserting a card. The evidence available here does not support promising a specific loading-time improvement, a maximum capacity, or a particular repair outcome.
Do not plan around a RAM upgrade
If your decision depends on adding memory, a standard Steam Deck is the wrong platform for that expectation. Valve documents 16 GB onboard LPDDR5 for both LCD and OLED models and supplies no owner-facing replacement method. Compare models by their documented memory configuration at purchase, then use storage upgrades only for storage needs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Safety checks before opening any Deck
- Remove the microSD card first. iFixit warns that leaving it inserted while removing the back cover can cause the card to snap.
- Power down completely and unplug cables. Do not rely on sleep mode while disconnecting internal parts.
- Reduce battery charge. The LCD guide recommends below 25 percent; it also reports Valve’s BIOS battery storage mode recommendation for internal repair.
- Use model-specific instructions. LCD and OLED guides are separate because their internal steps differ.
- Protect data before the swap. Recovery or re-imaging addresses SteamOS, not files that existed only on the removed SSD.
- Stop when parts do not match. A connector that looks different, a drive that is double-sided, or a cover that resists removal is a verification signal, not something to overcome with force.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying the wrong M.2 length
The most common specification error is treating “M.2” as a complete fit description. Verify 2230 and single-sided; a longer or thicker drive can fail to fit even when its interface name looks familiar.

Assuming an SSD swap preserves SteamOS
Replacing the internal drive removes the installation on that drive. Have Valve’s recovery instructions and the necessary recovery media ready before starting, not after the Deck is already open.
Using an LCD teardown for an OLED
The two models have separate guides. Follow the guide that matches the hardware in your hands and stop if illustrations or part layouts differ.
Expecting storage to solve a RAM limit
A larger SSD or microSD card increases file capacity only. Neither changes the 16 GB onboard LPDDR5 specification.
What is and is not established about performance
The documented facts support compatibility, physical form factor and recovery requirements. They do not provide a controlled comparison of microSD and internal-SSD loading times, a benchmark for a particular card or replacement drive, a maximum supported SSD capacity, or a guaranteed repair result. Treat those as separate questions requiring model- and component-specific testing rather than assumptions derived from the connector name.
Bottom line for an upgrade decision
For nearly every owner who simply needs more room, a compatible microSD card is the least disruptive answer and works across Steam Deck models. An internal upgrade is possible, but it means a single-sided M.2 2230 SSD, careful model-specific disassembly, battery and microSD precautions, and SteamOS recovery afterward. RAM is different: LCD and OLED Decks both document 16 GB of onboard LPDDR5 with no supported owner upgrade path, so choose the memory configuration you need before purchase.
