The StarFive VisionFive V1 8GB is a compact, Linux-oriented single-board computer built around a dual-core 64-bit RISC-V processor. It can be a useful platform for learning RISC-V Linux, but treat it as a board-specific development system rather than assuming every current Linux distribution or accelerator feature works out of the box. This is the original V1—not the newer VisionFive 2.
What the VisionFive V1 8GB is
StarFive’s VisionFive Quick Start Guide, version V1.1 dated March 1, 2022, describes the V1 as a Linux-oriented RISC-V single-board computer. Its central component is a dual-core SiFive U74 CPU running at 1.0 GHz, with a 64-bit RV64GC instruction set and 2 MB of L2 cache. The documented board configuration includes 8GB LPDDR4 memory.
The V1 is a distinct generation from VisionFive 2. Setup advice or software notes for V2 should not be assumed to apply to this board; check the board name and hardware revision on any image or guide before following it.

Is it suitable for learning RISC-V Linux?
Yes, if your goal is to explore a real RISC-V Linux board, its boot process, and board-specific software. The V1 combines an RV64GC CPU with familiar I/O such as USB, Ethernet, HDMI, and a microSD boot path. The practical learning experience depends on using software images and instructions intended for this board, rather than expecting the same polish and compatibility as a mainstream x86 or ARM desktop.
StarFive’s VisionFive Linux kernel repository describes its JH7100 kernel tree as a place for in-development patches to run Linux on boards using that SoC. That is useful development context, but it does not establish broad, current support across Linux distributions. StarFive also links board boot/software resources and a Fedora RISC-V image from its official GitHub organization; confirm the image’s board target and relevant date or branch before using it.

What you need to get started
For a basic setup, plan on the board, a microSD card for boot and storage, a suitable power supply, and—if you want a local console—an HDMI display plus USB peripherals. StarFive specifies 5 V / 3 A as the recommended supply and 5 V / 1.5 A as the minimum in its 2022 guide. These are board requirements; the guide information here does not establish a particular card capacity or bundled accessories.
Booting the board
Use a board-specific image and its matching instructions. The available official materials point to software and boot resources, but do not establish one universally current image or a single installation path for all users.

- Identify the board as VisionFive V1 and verify that the image or instructions explicitly target V1, not VisionFive 2.
- Choose an image from StarFive’s linked board resources, checking its name, date or branch, and stated hardware target.
- Write that image to a microSD card using the image’s own installation instructions. StarFive specifies microSD for system boot and storage.
- Insert the card, connect the peripherals needed for your setup, and power the board using a supply that meets the documented requirement. Follow the selected image’s boot and first-start instructions.
Because supported images and kernel work can change over time, use the image’s own documentation for exact flashing commands, boot configuration, and troubleshooting rather than applying generic Raspberry Pi or VisionFive 2 instructions.
Media and accelerator specifications: what they do—and do not—mean
The vendor guide lists HDMI output up to 1080p at 60 fps and H.264/H.265 decoding up to 4K at 60 fps. These are hardware specifications, not a promise that a particular Linux image can use every media feature in every application. Likewise, the guide lists a Vision DSP, NVDLA engine, and neural-network engine, but the cited materials do not establish working drivers for those accelerators in a current general-purpose Linux image.

Availability and buying checks
Current retail availability and price are not established by the official materials cited here. StarFive’s repository directs visitors to a sales-registration page, while RISC-V International lists the V1 board offering under inactive programs; neither confirms current stock or a current selling price.
If evaluating a listing, verify that it specifically names VisionFive V1 and the 8GB configuration. The similar VisionFive 2 name identifies a different generation, so a product title or setup guide that omits the generation is not enough to confirm a match.
