Two experimental mouse designs explore whether changing how your hand controls a pointer could make computer use more comfortable: Fleximouse moves the cursor through a squeeze, while an upright A-frame mouse changes the grip and hand posture. Both are research prototypes, not established retail products, and early feedback is not evidence that either prevents or treats wrist pain.

What are the two mouse designs?

Fleximouse: cursor control by squeezing

Fleximouse has a flexible mesh body that deforms when squeezed. Rather than relying only on moving the whole mouse across a desk, the concept connects changes in grip to cursor movement. The project repository includes body STL files, showing that prototype parts have been developed; it does not establish that the device is for sale. View the Fleximouse project repository.

In the prototype described in coverage, the mouse tracker sits forward of the flexible body, adding bulk to the arrangement. Participants reportedly liked the playful feel and the possibility of moving the cursor without repositioning the wrist as often. Some also missed familiar controls, including a scroll wheel. Josh Gulick’s September 23, 2025 Yahoo Tech coverage reports these reactions.

A-frame: an upright, hinged grip

The A-frame concept stands upright and uses a hinged frame to encourage a different hand and forearm posture from holding a conventional mouse flat. Its fit is a central challenge: reported feedback suggests that small differences in hand size affected comfort, and some users may find the grip unnatural. It is an exploration of posture, not a demonstrated solution for wrist pain.

What did the early evaluation find?

Yahoo Tech reported that 28 students at KTH Royal Institute of Technology evaluated the prototypes. In that group, 11 of 28 were reported to have previously experienced chronic discomfort associated with extended mouse use, and 4 of 28 had clinically diagnosed repetitive strain injuries. These are counts from a small student evaluation, not population estimates or evidence that the devices improve health.

Feedback was mixed: some participants appreciated Fleximouse’s feel and reduced need to reposition the wrist, while others preferred familiar mouse features. The researchers’ publication describes flexible form factors as promising for ergonomics, but notes tradeoffs in pointing speed and the need for personalized sizing. The available institutional record provides an abstract, not a full study protocol or detailed statistical results. It therefore does not establish long-term comfort, faster work, or reduced injury risk.

The authors’ abstract says, “Around 20 percent of computer users report chronic discomfort linked to mouse use.” That is the authors’ summary as presented in the publication record, not a sufficiently detailed independent population estimate. The record does not provide enough context to generalize the figure beyond that summary. Read the ACM publication record for “Flexible Ergonomics: Can a Flexible Mouse Fix That Wrist Pain?”

How do the concepts compare?

Consideration Fleximouse A-frame
How it changes interaction Grip changes deform the mesh body and control cursor movement. A hinged upright frame changes the intended hand and forearm posture.
Wrist repositioning Some participants reportedly liked not needing to reposition the wrist as often; no quantitative comparison is available. Designed to explore a different posture; reduced wrist repositioning was not quantified in the available reporting.
Fit Personalized sizing is identified as a need; comparative fit results are not stated. Reported feedback identified hand-size differences as a comfort challenge.
Pointing and familiar controls Some participants missed a scroll wheel; coverage describes the forward-mounted tracker as bulky. Comparative pointing-speed figures are not stated. Comparative pointing-speed and familiar-control results are not stated.
Availability Research prototype; no retail availability is established. Research concept; no retail availability is established.

The available evidence does not provide enough measured head-to-head data to rank the designs on speed, comfort, or suitability for different users.

Could an ergonomic mouse reduce wrist strain?

These prototypes are designed to alter grip or posture and may feel more comfortable to some people, but the reported evaluation does not show that either prevents repetitive strain injury, cures wrist pain, or provides a medically validated benefit. The published article by Jose Berengueres and Tony Yu, “Flexible Ergonomics: Can a Flexible Mouse Fix That Wrist Pain?”, appeared in Interactions 32(5), pages 32–37, on August 27, 2025. The institutional record supplies an abstract but not the detailed methods, full participant demographics, statistical comparisons, or long-term follow-up needed to assess health outcomes.

If you are choosing a mouse now, a conventional ergonomic model such as Logitech’s MX Master series is an available alternative mentioned in the coverage. It does not reproduce either prototype’s squeeze-control or hinged A-frame design, and the cited material does not establish that it is clinically protective. Comfort depends on the individual and setup; persistent or worsening pain warrants advice from a qualified health professional rather than relying on a mouse change as treatment.

Are the prototypes available to buy?

No purchase route for either concept is established in the project materials or coverage. The repository links prototype body STL files and reports that a provisional U.S. patent application was filed on March 6, 2025. A provisional filing is not a granted patent, and neither the files nor the filing demonstrate consumer availability or a finalized product.
