What is the Slug algorithm?
Slug is a GPU-centered approach to rendering fonts and other vector shapes from Bézier curves. Instead of relying on a collection of pre-rendered glyph bitmaps or a texture atlas, it supplies outline data to GPU rendering logic. The foundational technical description is Eric Lengyel’s 2017 paper, “GPU-Centered Font Rendering Directly from Glyph Outlines”.
How does Slug render fonts on the GPU?
The technique works with glyph outlines built from quadratic Bézier curves. It organizes curve data into spatial bands, allowing rendering to restrict which curves it evaluates for a given region. For implementation details, consult the paper and the commented shaders and usage notes in Lengyel’s reference repository.
Using Slug involves more than choosing a shader: outline data must be prepared and integrated with a rendering pipeline. For example, the diffusionstudio WebGPU implementation documents a workflow that shapes text, extracts curves, and organizes bands on the CPU before rendering on the GPU. That describes this example implementation, not a required division of work for every integration.

Is the Slug algorithm now public domain?
In his 2026 announcement, Eric Lengyel wrote: “Therefore, effective today, I am permanently and irrevocably dedicating the Slug patent to the public domain.” Read the announcement at “A Decade of Slug”.
The patent dedication and the source repository’s code terms are separate statements. The reference repository says its code may be used by anyone for any purpose and asks users to give credit if they distribute software that uses it. Check the repository’s current license files and terms before relying on them; these statements should not be treated as a universal legal conclusion about every jurisdiction or third-party implementation.

- Slug Font Rendering Library describes a standalone tool that reads TrueType and PostScript OpenType fonts and produces .slug files for GPU rendering. This is the vendor’s product description; check its site for current availability and terms.

The available descriptions establish how Slug works, not that it is universally faster or better than bitmap atlases, signed distance fields, or other outline-rendering methods. Compare approaches under your own target hardware and workload, considering:
