Skillz is not universally legal or universally illegal. Its cash-entry tournaments are available only in places and game categories where the company says they are permitted; eligibility depends on your location and the game. Skillz says players must be at least 18 and enable device location for cash competitions. Before paying an entry fee, check the current rules in the app and the law where you are.

Is Skillz legal to play?
There is no single yes-or-no answer that applies everywhere. Skillz says the legality of skill-based competitions in the United States is determined at the state level. Courts may assess whether skill or chance predominates, or whether chance is a material element. Those legal approaches do not make every contest automatically lawful: the details of a game and the law in the relevant jurisdiction matter.

In its June 23, 2026 article, Skillz states: “In the U.S., the legality of skill-based competitions is determined at a state level and Skillz has taken extensive measures to ensure that its products are in full compliance with all the applicable laws.” This is the company’s account of its legal position, not a regulator’s finding or an independent legal opinion. Skillz’s FY2025 Form 10-K says it enables paid-entry games only in jurisdictions where skill-based gaming is permitted and does not have to be licensed as gambling. The filing also warns that the industry may face increased scrutiny and regulation, and that laws could be interpreted to cover its games or entry fees. The policy describes how the company says it operates; it does not settle a particular player’s legal status. Skillz FY2025 Form 10-K, filed April 1, 2026
Where can you enter cash competitions?
In guidance dated June 23, 2026, Skillz said its real-prize competitions were available in 45 U.S. states. It listed Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Louisiana, and South Dakota as unavailable for cash competitions. The same guidance listed real-prize card games as unavailable in Maine and Indiana, and domino-based play as unavailable in New Jersey. These are Skillz’s published availability statements, not an independent determination that the listed jurisdictions approve its contests.

Social-casino play has separate restrictions
Skillz’s social-casino guidance, updated July 1, 2025, lists Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, South Carolina, and West Virginia as restricted for that product. It also distinguishes Ticketz-based play from Z-based play. This is not the cash-tournament availability list, so do not use it to determine whether a paid contest is available. Who is eligible to compete?
Skillz’s July 5, 2026 guidance says cash-competition players must be at least 18 and have device location settings enabled. The company also publishes additional country and Australia restrictions, and says availability may depend on the particular game. The current in-app eligibility check is the practical place to confirm whether your account and location can enter a specific contest. Skillz: Who is eligible to compete in Skillz competitions?
Are Skillz games free?
Skillz says its games are free to download and can be played using its virtual currency, Z. Some modes, however, require a cash entry fee. Free download, free-to-play with virtual currency, and free-to-enter tournaments are different from paid cash-entry contests. Check the entry terms for the mode you select rather than assuming that a free game download makes every tournament free. Skillz’s free-game explanation was updated November 19, 2024. What to know before paying an entry fee
- Confirm the exact contest. Rules and availability can depend on the game and competition type.
- Check location eligibility. Allow device location and verify that the app permits the contest where you are.
- Read the entry terms. Confirm whether the mode uses virtual currency or requires a cash entry fee, and understand its contest rules before joining.
- Do not treat prizes as income. The cited materials do not establish typical player earnings, expected returns, or a likelihood of winning.
Skillz’s support pages explain its current rules and location checks, while its SEC filing records the company’s operating policy and regulatory risk disclosures. Those materials do not independently establish how a particular match is run or determine whether a contest is lawful for an individual player.
