To reduce Call of Duty storage, keep the Call of Duty HQ application and remove only the modes you do not play. Open the game’s Manage Files screen and uninstall unused Campaign, DMZ, Warzone, Zombies, Endgame, language, or texture packs. Do not delete the base application or Shared Content Packs that another installed mode needs.
This matters because one Call of Duty tile now contains Modern Warfare 4 (launched 23 October 2026), Warzone, Black Ops 7, and older content. A large total usually represents several games and shared data rather than one campaign. The figures below reflect live-service builds around 19 October 2026; check Manage Files again after Season 1 begins on 6 November 2026.
Why is Call of Duty taking up 200 GB or more?
Call of Duty HQ is a shared launcher. Its storage total can include Modern Warfare 4, Warzone, Black Ops 7, older downloadable content, shared assets, language files, high-resolution textures, and temporary update files. The dashboard number therefore does not equal the size of the one mode you intend to play.

Xbox and PlayStation can label the same data under more than one title, so adding the displayed pack sizes can produce a total larger than the actual installation. Activision’s support guidance is to remove content through the in-game manager rather than the console or PC store. Its explanation is that the Call of Duty file-management system gives players control over which content is stored locally; platform menus may treat files individually and produce a different result.
Which Call of Duty packs are the largest?
The following are live-service figures, not permanent requirements. COD Central recorded the PC values in the in-game file menu on 19 October 2026. A later patch, especially the Season 1 update, can change them.
| Content | Platform and source date | Displayed size | What removing it affects |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modern Warfare 4 Campaign | PC in-game menu, COD Central, 19 October 2026 | 43.22 GB | Campaign missions only |
| Modern Warfare 4 Multiplayer | PC in-game menu, COD Central, 19 October 2026 | 19.74 GB | MW4 competitive multiplayer |
| Modern Warfare 4 DMZ | PC in-game menu, COD Central, 19 October 2026 | 44.07 GB | DMZ mode; the menu had shown 4.86 GB earlier the same day |
| Warzone | PC in-game menu, COD Central, 19 October 2026 | 43.72 GB | Current Warzone content |
| Black Ops 7 Multiplayer | PC in-game menu, COD Central, 19 October 2026 | 39.85 GB | BO7 multiplayer |
| Black Ops 7 Co-op and Endgame | PC in-game menu, COD Central, 19 October 2026 | 14.48 GB | Those BO7 activities |
| Black Ops 7 Zombies | PC in-game menu, COD Central, 19 October 2026 | 11.83 GB | BO7 Zombies |
| Call of Duty: Warzone 2025 DLC | Steam listing, COD Central, 19 October 2026 | 119.36 GB (almost 120 GB) | Leftover Steam depot; remove it if no installed mode requires it |
Steam’s DLC list was ahead of the in-game menu: it showed DMZ at 44.07 GB while the game menu still showed 4.86 GB, and it listed MW4 Multiplayer at 57.86 GB versus 19.74 GB in-game. Use the larger launcher number when planning free space around a launch patch, then verify the actual reclaimable amount after the update completes.
What should I keep and what can I uninstall?
Keep the base Call of Duty HQ application and every Shared Content Pack required by a mode you still play. Remove a mode only when you are comfortable downloading it again later.
| Keep | Usually safe to remove when unused | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Call of Duty HQ/base application | MW4 Campaign | The launcher is the entry point for every remaining mode; Campaign is a separate download. |
| Shared Content Packs used by installed modes | MW4 DMZ | DMZ was about 44 GB on the 19 October PC menu after its early-access update. |
| Shared files required by your chosen multiplayer mode | Warzone | Warzone was about 44 GB on the same PC menu and about 42 GB as a reported PS5 pack. |
| Your active MW4 or BO7 multiplayer pack | BO7 Zombies, Endgame, or Multiplayer packs you do not use | Each mode is separately selectable in the content manager. |
| Only the language files you need | Unused languages and optional high-resolution texture files, where the launcher exposes them | These can save additional space, but the exact amount varies by build and language. |
| Current files needed for updates | Finished campaigns from older Call of Duty titles | Older campaign packs are not needed for a mode you have removed. |
Never strip a Shared Content Pack merely because its name is not the mode you launch. Several modes can depend on the same pack, and removing it can trigger a repair or redownload. Do not delete random folders inside the installation directory; the launcher can download them again or leave the patch pipeline inconsistent.
How do I reduce Call of Duty install size on every platform?
Use the game’s own manager first. The labels can vary slightly by platform, but the procedure is the same.
- Launch Call of Duty from your console or PC.
- Open the Menu and select Manage Files. On current HQ builds, the file icon is in the top-right corner of the main menu.
- Select Manage Files again if the first screen is a title overview.
- Choose Modern Warfare 4, Warzone, or Black Ops 7, then highlight the mode you do not need.
- Select Manage Files, choose Uninstall, and confirm. Use Install in the same screen to restore it later.
- Restart the launcher and check the platform’s free-space display after the uninstall has completed.
The base game cannot be removed while you intend to keep Warzone or DMZ, because those modes still launch through HQ. Uninstalling a mode removes local data only; it does not delete your online account progress.

How do I trim Call of Duty on Battle.net?
Battle.net gives you granular checkboxes for the individual Call of Duty modes.
- Open Battle.net and select Call of Duty, not a separate Modern Warfare 4 entry.
- Click the gear icon beside Play or Update, then choose Modify Install.
- Choose Modify Install again to display the content list.
- Untick unused MW4 Campaign, Multiplayer, or DMZ packs, unused Black Ops 7 Endgame, Multiplayer, or Zombies packs, and Warzone if you do not play it.
- Leave Base Game and required shared content selected, confirm, and click Start Update.
After Battle.net finishes, open Manage Files inside Call of Duty once more. The game menu is the better authority for what the current build still requires, especially after a large seasonal patch.
How do I remove Call of Duty content from Steam?
Steam’s library entry is named Call of Duty; Modern Warfare 4 may not appear as its own game. DLC checkboxes control which modes Steam keeps installed.
- In Steam Library, right-click Call of Duty and select Properties.
- Open the DLC tab.
- Clear the checkboxes for modes you do not use, including Warzone, MW4 Campaign, DMZ, BO7 Zombies, BO7 Endgame, or BO7 Multiplayer.
- Pay particular attention to the old Call of Duty: Warzone 2025 entry. COD Central listed it at 119.36 GB; unchecking it was the largest single Steam reclaim in that October menu.
- Close Properties and let Steam apply the change. Then launch Call of Duty and confirm the result in Manage Files.
Steam can show a larger or older depot size than the game itself. Do not manually erase files from the Call of Duty folder to chase the Steam number; use the DLC controls and allow Steam to validate the installation.
How do I reduce the PS5 installation?
On PS5, choose a lean install before downloading, then remove packs from the console’s game-content screen. Shared packs must remain if another installed mode depends on them.
Choose packs before installation
- Open Game Library → Your Collection.
- Select Call of Duty or Black Ops 7, choose Download, and open Install Options.
- Clear Select All.
- Select only the packs you want, such as MW4 Multiplayer and its required shared content, then choose OK → Install.
Remove packs after installation
- Highlight the Call of Duty tile on the PS5 home screen.
- Press the Options button and select Manage Game Content.
- Use the trash icon beside an unused pack, such as BO7 Multiplayer, Campaign, or Warzone.
- Leave Shared Content Packs in place unless Manage Files explicitly shows that no installed mode needs them.
A reported 2026 PS5 package listing showed an HQ application of 28.702 GB, Campaign Pack of 42.171 GB, Multiplayer Pack of 20.770 GB, DMZ Pack 01 of 5.777 GB, Shared Content Pack 01 of 19.602 GB, and Warzone Pack of 42.033 GB. DMZ Pack 02 was listed without a published size. The listing’s planning math put Campaign plus Multiplayer at about 111 GB and those packs plus Warzone at about 159 GB; treat those as package estimates, not a permanent storage guarantee.
PS5 Storage may show Call of Duty as larger than the in-game manager because packs are marked as shared with Black Ops 6 and other titles. The console’s total is therefore not a simple sum of unique mode files.

How do I trim Call of Duty on Xbox Series X|S?
Xbox uses add-on management, but its displayed sizes are particularly affected by shared data. Read the figures as guidance rather than as the exact amount you will recover.

Remove installed modes
- Highlight Call of Duty and press the Menu button.
- Choose Manage game and add-ons → Game items.
- Untick unused modes and confirm the change.
- Open in-game Manage Files after the operation to check dependencies.
COD Central captured an Xbox screen showing 205.2 GB installed with four of eight items. The same screen labeled Warzone 104.9 GB and BO7 Multiplayer 101.0 GB, a combined figure larger than the displayed total. That arithmetic demonstrates why Xbox labels can overstate reclaimable space. Xbox removes the content locally and allows it to be downloaded again later.
What about Xbox on PC and Game Pass?
In the Xbox app, open My Library → Call of Duty → Install → Choose what to install. Select only the modes you need, then use the same in-game Manage Files path to remove content later. The shared HQ application remains installed while any selected mode depends on it.
Can texture streaming reduce the disk footprint?
Texture streaming is a secondary lever, not a replacement for uninstalling a 40 GB mode. Activision renamed the setting On-Demand High-Quality Streaming; find it under Menu → Manage Files → Graphics.
- Optimized: higher-fidelity graphics and greater internet-bandwidth use.
- Minimal: reduced graphical quality and lower bandwidth use.
Activision says less-used content can remain in a streaming cache instead of being downloaded directly to local storage. This trades bandwidth and image quality against disk use. If your internet plan has a data cap, Minimal may prevent repeated high-quality downloads; if you have ample bandwidth and want maximum fidelity, Optimized is the appropriate setting. It does not remove Campaign, DMZ, Warzone, or BO7 mode packs.

Which lean installation should I choose?
Your best mix depends on the modes you actually launch. Install the shared files once, then add only the unique packs in the corresponding row.
| Play pattern | Install | Leave out | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
| MW4 multiplayer only | HQ/base, required Shared Content Pack, MW4 Multiplayer | Campaign, DMZ, Warzone, BO7 packs | Use this for a smallest launch-day MW4 setup. |
| MW4 campaign plus multiplayer | HQ/base, shared content, MW4 Campaign, MW4 Multiplayer | DMZ, Warzone, unused BO7 packs | The reported PS5 planning total was about 111 GB before extra update headroom. |
| MW4 DMZ player | HQ/base, shared content, MW4 DMZ, and the multiplayer pack only if you play it | Campaign, Warzone, unused BO7 packs | Allow for the post-19 October DMZ size of about 44 GB on PC. |
| Current Warzone player | HQ/base, shared content, Warzone | Campaign, DMZ, and BO7 modes you do not use | Installing Warzone before Season 1 downloads the current live version, not a future MW4-integrated map. |
| BO7 multiplayer or Zombies player | HQ/base, required shared content, the BO7 mode you play | Other BO7 modes, MW4 Campaign, DMZ, and Warzone if unused | Remove Endgame, Multiplayer, and Zombies independently. |
On 17 October 2026, Timesaver’s launch-day planning recommended multiplayer-only content and postponing Warzone until Season 1 unless you wanted the current live Warzone. That is a choice about download timing, not a promise that Warzone will be smaller after the season update.

Will uninstalling a mode delete my progress?
No. COD Central’s 19 October 2026 FAQ says levels, unlocks, and camos are stored on Call of Duty’s servers. Removing a mode deletes its local files; reinstalling the mode later restores the download requirement without resetting those server-side records.
Reinstallation downloads the complete current pack, not only the files that changed since you removed it. Leave enough free space for the pack and its update staging area before selecting Install.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy does the required free space exceed the installed size?
Activision’s 2026 PC specification calls for an SSD with 115 GB available at launch on Minimum, Recommended, and Ray Tracing tiers. It also warns that mandatory updates may require additional storage. The 115 GB figure is launch-time free space, not a promise that HQ, Campaign, Multiplayer, DMZ, and Warzone together fit inside 115 GB.
Keep roughly 20–50 GB free for patch staging. A 99-percent-full SSD can fail an update even when the patch download itself appears small, because the launcher may need temporary space to unpack, verify, and replace files.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do if trimming modes is still not enough?
Work from the least disruptive fix to the most permanent one.
- Remove unused modes first. This usually returns tens of gigabytes without changing your active mode.
- Remove optional languages and high-resolution texture files. Use the launcher’s checkboxes where available; exact language-pack sizes are not published consistently, but they are often a few gigabytes.
- Clear temporary Windows files. Storage Sense can remove unrelated temporary data, but it does not compress or shrink the Call of Duty folder itself.
- Move the installation. Battle.net, Steam, and the Xbox app each provide a library or installation-location control; move the complete installation rather than dragging individual game files.
- Add faster storage. A PS5 can use a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD, such as the WD_BLACK SN850P line available in 1 TB and 2 TB capacities. Xbox Series X|S requires a compatible expansion card. A PC can add or replace an NVMe SSD.
USB hard drives are suitable for storing current-generation games, but they are not the normal playing location for current-generation Call of Duty. PS5 users who want to play the game should install it on the internal SSD or a compatible M.2 drive; Xbox users should use the internal SSD or a supported expansion card.

What common mistakes make the installation grow again?
- Deleting the HQ application: this removes the entry point needed by every remaining mode and can force a full reinstall.
- Removing Shared Content Packs: a different mode may depend on them, causing a repair or redownload.
- Using only the console storage total: shared packs can be counted under multiple titles.
- Trusting an old launcher figure: Steam and the in-game menu can disagree during a rollout; check again after the update settles.
- Deleting folders manually: launchers may restore the files, fail validation, or leave an incomplete patch state.
- Installing every mode by default: choose Install Options or Choose what to install before the initial download.
- Ignoring patch headroom: leave free space beyond the displayed game size so seasonal updates can stage safely.
Will the size change after Season 1?
Yes. Call of Duty is a live service, and Activision’s Call of Duty Updates account said on 14 September 2026 that the Season 06 Black Ops 7/Warzone repack would reduce total storage after players removed content they no longer played. That kind of repack can change both the base package and the apparent size of individual modes.
Season 1 begins on 6 November 2026. Warzone’s post-Season 1 size is not yet a stable published figure, so revisit Manage Files after the update rather than relying on October numbers. The in-game list is the current source of truth for which packs are installed and which dependencies remain.
Is Modern Warfare 4 available on PS4 or Xbox One?
No. Modern Warfare 4 is current-generation only: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. A PS4 or Xbox One storage question may refer to an older Call of Duty title inside the shared ecosystem, whose packs and requirements are different.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I find Modern Warfare 4 as a separate game in Steam?
Modern Warfare 4 is delivered through the shared Call of Duty library entry, so Steam lists the product as Call of Duty and exposes MW4 through its DLC tab. Launch that entry and use the in-game title tiles to manage MW4 content.
Does switching On-Demand High-Quality Streaming to Minimal stop all downloads?
No. Minimal changes how less-used visual assets are cached and streamed; it does not remove installed mode packs or prevent mandatory updates. You can still see network use when the game needs assets that are not cached locally.
Can I keep Call of Duty on an external USB drive and play it on PS5?
PS5 allows compatible PS4 games to run from USB, but current-generation Call of Duty content needs the internal SSD or a compatible M.2 expansion for normal play. USB storage is useful for archiving the installation while freeing internal space.
Why did my free space fall again after a small Call of Duty patch?
The launcher may reserve temporary staging space, unpack replacement files, and retain rollback data while verifying the update. Once the patch finishes and temporary files are released, the footprint can fall; leave a buffer so this process does not fail.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will removing an unused language pack affect my account or unlocks?
Language and audio files are local assets, so removing an unused language does not change your profile, levels, camos, or unlocks. Re-selecting that language in the launcher later downloads its files again, and the exact saving varies by language and platform.
