Shopify announced Canvas on October 1, 2026, and said it was rolling out to merchants over the following days.
What Shopify Canvas does
Canvas changes the scale at which merchants can work: instead of treating each page as a separate design task, it lays out the store’s pages together in one workspace. That makes it possible to assess how the storefront fits together, then move from the overall view to a particular page or element. Shopify describes the feature in its Canvas announcement.
Merchants can use Sidekick to request a change in natural language, or click parts of the design to edit them. That supports both targeted adjustments and coordinated changes across the storefront; it does not mean every kind of store or theme can currently use Canvas.
How conversational editing works
Canvas displays a rendering of the store’s theme code rather than a static design mockup. Merchants can preview interactions, animations, products, collections, and different screen sizes. Sidekick’s changes appear in the Canvas workspace as it works.

Shopify says Sidekick can work directly on theme files, validate code, inspect screenshots, and iterate before handing changes back to the merchant. The intended workflow is therefore more than asking an AI to suggest a design: merchants can see and review the result in the context of the working storefront. The official launch article and Winter ’26 Editions describe the product and its workflow.

Shopify’s changelog lists Canvas’s launch exclusions and notes an important trade-off: themes edited in Canvas do not receive theme updates. Check the Canvas changelog entry before choosing it for a live theme.

What to check before using Canvas
- Theme: Canvas does not support third-party themes from the Shopify Theme Store at launch.
- Store features: Markets, rollouts, translations, app blocks, and app embeds are among the listed exclusions.
- Theme updates: A theme edited in Canvas will not receive theme updates, so weigh Canvas’s workflow against the value of keeping those updates.
- Availability: Shopify said Canvas was rolling out over the days after its October 1, 2026 announcement; availability may depend on the merchant’s account.
Why the whole-store view matters
Shopify’s “big picture” framing is about seeing the relationship between pages before committing to an edit. A merchant can consider consistency across the storefront and judge a local change against the rest of the site, rather than evaluating each page in isolation. That is particularly relevant when a redesign involves several pages or a shared visual direction.
Shopify reported that Sidekick made more than 25 million theme edits in the first half of 2026. That figure describes Sidekick activity before Canvas launched; it is not a measure of Canvas usage or a guarantee of design quality. Shopify design director Austin Knight said that getting Sidekick to write code was easy, while guiding it toward good design decisions took more time and attention. Canvas’s whole-store workspace addresses that design-guidance problem by giving merchants a broader view of the work.

Is Shopify Canvas replacing the theme editor?
No. Shopify says Canvas is not replacing the existing editor yet, and has acknowledged that gaps remain. For now, Canvas is a new design surface with meaningful compatibility limits, not a universal replacement for editing Shopify themes. Merchants should confirm their theme and required store features are supported before relying on it for a redesign.
