When a site on shared hosting fails, the cause may be your browser, DNS, a changed file, a database service, an account limit, or the host’s infrastructure. The fastest safe approach is to capture the exact message, reproduce it from another network, verify the domain and DNS, check provider status and logs, and only then change code or settings. This guide gives you that sequence for “website down” reports, HTTP 500–508 errors, database connection failures, certificate warnings, redirect loops, timeouts, and resource-limit messages. Make a backup before restoring files, editing .htaccess, disabling extensions, or changing application configuration.

What should I do first when my shared-hosting website is down?

Start by determining whether the failure is local, domain-wide, site-specific, or provider-wide. Do not immediately reinstall the site or change DNS; those actions can destroy useful evidence and create a second outage.

  1. Record the symptom. Copy the complete browser message, HTTP status code, affected URL, date and time, and your time zone. Note whether the home page, administrative area, email, or every page is affected.
  2. Reproduce it elsewhere. Open the URL in a private window and a second browser, then test another device or mobile network. If only one device fails, clear its cache, disable extensions, and investigate the local network before editing hosting files.
  3. List recent changes. Include plugin or theme updates, application deployments, PHP-version changes, DNS edits, migrations, certificate renewals, new redirects, and unusually heavy traffic.
  4. Preserve evidence and backups. Download the latest working backup and, if possible, export the current database and copy the site files before recovery work.

This initial record lets support correlate your report with server logs and prevents a local browser problem from being mistaken for a hosting outage.

How can I tell whether the problem is my device or the hosting account?

Compare the same URL across independent browsers, devices, and connections. A failure that appears only on one computer usually points to cached content, a browser extension, local DNS, a firewall, or a captive network rather than the hosting account.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Signs of a local problem

  • Other people can open the site while one device cannot.
  • A private window works but a normal window does not.
  • The browser shows a stale certificate or DNS result that disappears on a different network.
  • Only one Wi-Fi or corporate network blocks the connection.

Signs of a site, account, or provider problem

  • The same status code appears from multiple networks and devices.
  • Several unrelated pages on the account fail together.
  • The control panel cannot reach a database or shows disk, inode, memory, or process warnings.
  • The host reports maintenance or a service incident.

Save screenshots and timestamps from the independent tests. They are more useful to support than a description such as “it is slow” or “the site is broken.”

How do I check the domain, nameservers, and DNS records?

Confirm that the domain is active, its nameservers point to the DNS provider you actually use, and the active zone sends visitors to the intended hosting destination. DNS changes can remain hidden by caches for a variable period, so do not assume one universal propagation time.

  1. Check the domain registrar account for expiration, suspension, transfer lock, or verification notices.
  2. Identify the authoritative nameservers. They may be at your host, registrar, CDN, or a separate DNS service.
  3. Open the authoritative DNS zone and inspect the root (apex) record and the www record. Compare their values with the destination supplied by your hosting provider.
  4. Look for conflicting A, AAAA, CNAME, or redirect records. An old IPv6 record can send some visitors to a different server even when the IPv4 record is correct.
  5. After an edit, test from more than one network and allow caches to expire. Keep the old records documented until the new destination is confirmed.

If the domain resolves to the wrong server, fixing application files will not help. If records are correct but requests still fail everywhere, check host status and logs before making another DNS change.

What do common HTTP errors mean on shared hosting?

An HTTP code is a clue, not a diagnosis. The same code can result from site code, configuration, security rules, resource exhaustion, or a host-side service, so use logs and account information to narrow it down.

Error Likely areas to check Safe next action
404 Not Found Deleted or moved page, mistyped URL, broken internal link, incorrect document root Confirm the URL, restore or redirect the page if it moved, and check that the file is in the active web root.
403 Forbidden File or directory permissions, access rules, firewall or security service Review permissions and recent rule changes; ask the host whether a firewall or account policy is blocking the request.
500 Internal Server Error Broken .htaccess, PHP fatal error, incompatible plugin or theme, invalid setting, permissions, exhausted resources Read the error log, back up, and roll back the most recent change one item at a time.
502 Bad Gateway Upstream PHP or web service failure, proxy or CDN connection, temporary server fault Check provider status and logs; escalate if it persists across networks.
503 Service Unavailable Maintenance, temporary overload, unavailable PHP service, account resource pressure Check host notices and resource graphs before changing application code.
504 Gateway Timeout Slow or stalled upstream process, long database query, overloaded service Inspect slow requests and recent workload; provider intervention may be required.
508 Resource Limit Reached Plan-specific CPU, memory, process, disk, or inode limits Review usage panels, reduce the workload, and ask support for the exact limit and event log.

How do I fix a 500 Internal Server Error or a blank page?

Find the first relevant log entry and compare it with your latest change. A blank page often represents a hidden PHP fatal error, while a 500 response can also come from rewrite rules, permissions, or exhausted account resources.

Check logs before editing files

Use the hosting control panel’s error or metrics section, and check the application’s own log if it has one. Record the timestamp, requested path, PHP message, and file or line number. A single repeated error is more actionable than a long list of unrelated warnings.

Test the highest-probability causes

  1. Undo the newest extension or code change. Disable the last plugin, theme, module, or deployment. If the site returns, restore items individually to identify the conflict.
  2. Validate .htaccess. Rename it temporarily to a backup filename rather than deleting it. If the error clears, recreate rewrite rules from a known-good copy and remove the invalid directive.
  3. Review permissions and ownership. A migration or manual upload can leave files unreadable by the web process. Correct them using the host’s documented defaults instead of applying broad, writable permissions.
  4. Check PHP settings and resources. Confirm the selected PHP version, memory allowance, execution time, and extension requirements. On shared plans, some values cannot be raised without provider assistance.
  5. Restore selectively. If a file is corrupted, restore only that file or the last known-good release, keeping a copy of the failed version for comparison.

Do not hide errors by turning off logging or repeatedly refreshing a failing script; repeated requests can consume more account resources.

Why does my site show “Error Establishing a Database Connection”?

The application cannot complete a database connection. The cause may be wrong credentials in the application configuration, an unavailable database service, exhausted quota, permissions, or a connection limit on the hosting account.

Verify application settings

  1. Open the application configuration file using the host’s file manager or secure file transfer.
  2. Compare the database name, username, password, and database host with the values shown in the hosting control panel. Check for extra spaces, changed prefixes, and special characters copied incorrectly.
  3. Confirm that the database user is assigned to the database and has the required privileges.
  4. Save a backup of the configuration before editing, then test one change at a time.

When credentials are correct

Check whether the database service is degraded, the account has reached a storage quota, or the plan has a connection or process limit. A host-side outage can produce the same message as a typo. Repeatedly resetting passwords without checking the configured values can make recovery harder and invalidate other applications that share the account.

How should I troubleshoot timeouts and very slow pages?

Separate a slow application from a slow or unavailable host. Test a static file, the home page, and a lightweight administrative page, then compare their response times and timestamps in the logs.

Why am I seeing a certificate warning or “Not secure” message?

A valid certificate is only one part of HTTPS. The browser must reach the intended host, the certificate must cover that hostname, and every page resource and redirect must use HTTPS correctly.

Certificate and DNS checks

  1. Confirm the address uses the expected hostname and that DNS points to the server or CDN where the certificate is installed.
  2. Inspect the certificate’s expiration date, hostname coverage, and chain in the browser’s certificate details.
  3. Check whether the certificate was issued for the root domain but not www, or vice versa.
  4. After DNS or certificate changes, test from another network to avoid relying on a cached result.

Mixed content and redirect loops

If the page loads over HTTPS but still reports insecure content, inspect images, scripts, stylesheets, fonts, and embedded frames for hard-coded http:// URLs. Update the application’s canonical URL and resource references, then clear its cache. Redirect loops commonly occur when both the origin server and a CDN force HTTPS while each interprets the other connection as HTTP; use one consistent redirect policy and verify the proxy’s TLS mode.

What causes 503, 508, and storage-limit errors?

These messages often indicate temporary overload, maintenance, or a plan-specific limit rather than a broken page. Shared hosts enforce different CPU, memory, process, disk, and inode thresholds, so the account panel and provider support are the authority.

Inspect account usage

  • Open the control panel’s resource, disk, and inode usage views.
  • Note the exact time of each limit event and which process or URL was active, if shown.
  • Remove old backups, caches, logs, and unused mail only after confirming they are not needed for recovery.
  • Check for runaway scripts, cron jobs, traffic spikes, image processing, or malware indicators.

Reduce demand safely

Pause nonessential scheduled jobs, disable a newly installed extension, and limit expensive imports or crawlers. Do not delete databases or core files to free space. If usage is normal but limits still trigger, ask support for the account’s threshold, the process that exceeded it, and whether a service incident is underway.

How do I handle 403 errors and unexpected security blocks?

A 403 response can be caused by permissions, a deny rule, a web-application firewall, rate limiting, or an account policy. Changing file permissions alone will not fix a request blocked before it reaches your site.

  1. Check whether every URL or only one directory is blocked.
  2. Review recent changes to .htaccess, server rules, authentication, IP allowlists, and security plugins.
  3. Test from a different network; a block that follows one IP address suggests a firewall or reputation rule.
  4. Ask the host whether a security service blocked the request and provide the timestamp, source IP, and URL.

Avoid disabling all security controls permanently. Make the narrowest rule change possible and restore protection after testing.

When should I restore a backup, and what should I save first?

Restore when logs show corruption or a known bad deployment and you have a verified working copy. Preserve the failed state before replacing it so you can identify the cause and avoid reintroducing it.

  1. Export the current database and copy the current files, including configuration and logs.
  2. Confirm the backup date, application version, database compatibility, and storage location.
  3. Restore to a staging area or temporary directory when the host provides one.
  4. Test the home page, login, forms, media, and database-backed features.
  5. Switch production only after the test passes, then monitor logs for recurrence.

Backups do not repair an expired domain, wrong DNS, unavailable database service, or an account limit; diagnose those conditions separately.

Should I keep troubleshooting or escalate immediately?

Use the evidence you collected to choose the lowest-risk path.

Evidence Best next step
Only one device or network fails Investigate browser cache, extensions, local DNS, or network filtering.
Domain expired or nameservers/records are wrong Correct registrar or DNS settings and wait for caches to update.
Logs identify a recent file, plugin, theme, or .htaccess change Back up, roll back that change, and retest.
Database, PHP service, firewall, or resource-limit message appears Open a support ticket with timestamps and log excerpts.
Several sites or services at the host fail together Check the provider’s status information and avoid destructive site changes while the incident is investigated.

How can I prevent repeat shared-hosting outages?

Prevention is mostly disciplined change management and monitoring rather than a single setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep automated, off-account backups and periodically test a restore.
  • Stage plugin, theme, PHP, and application updates before production.
  • Document DNS records, certificate hostnames, scheduled jobs, and rollback steps.
  • Review disk, inode, memory, and process usage before predictable traffic or imports.
  • Retain error logs long enough to compare incidents, while removing secrets from shared reports.
  • Use uptime checks from more than one network so a local failure is not mistaken for downtime.

These practices reduce recovery time and give the host precise evidence when the underlying fault is outside your account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can clearing my browser cache fix a website outage?

It can resolve a stale redirect, cached DNS result, or service-worker response on one device, but it cannot repair a server-wide HTTP error. Test a private window and another network first; if both fail, investigate DNS, hosting, or the application.

How long should I wait after changing DNS?

There is no single guaranteed interval because recursive resolvers cache records according to their TTL and may retain older data. Keep the previous destination available when practical, test from independent networks, and ask the DNS provider which TTL applies.

Is moving from shared hosting the only way to stop resource-limit errors?

Not necessarily. Removing runaway jobs, optimizing heavy queries, cleaning inode usage, and reducing traffic bursts may resolve the trigger. Upgrade or migrate only after the host identifies which limit is being exceeded and whether your workload consistently needs more capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the site works by IP address but not by domain name?

That pattern points to DNS, hostname routing, or certificate configuration rather than ordinary page code. Verify the authoritative nameservers, root and www records, and that the web server is configured for the requested hostname before changing application files.
