Sentinel-3C has sent back its first natural-colour images and early altimeter measurements, and the European Space Agency (ESA) reports that both sets of data look healthy. The images show Italy, the Canadian Arctic and the Caribbean. The altimeter returned early readings of the Greenland ice sheet and of sea-surface height. ESA describes these as early confirmation that the instruments are performing well. It does not describe the satellite as fully operational. In its 8 October 2026 update, ESA said Sentinel-3C was still in commissioning, and the first observations from its sea and land surface temperature radiometer were still to come.
Where the satellite stands today
As of ESA’s 8 October 2026 update, Sentinel-3C is in commissioning, the period when engineers check and calibrate each instrument before routine service begins. ESA estimated that this process would take about five more months. That points to roughly early 2027, though the schedule could change. Until then, the first measurements should be read as functional checks rather than the start of a finished data service.
Three of the four instruments have returned first data. The sea and land surface temperature radiometer (SLSTR) has not yet produced first observations.

What the first images show
Italy
The 30 September natural-colour image of the Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) runs from southern Germany to Sicily and across the southern Mediterranean. It shows the Po Valley, the Alps, variations in land-cover colour, and the surrounding seas. ESA says sediment carried by rivers and moved along the coast is the likely reason the eastern Italian shoreline appears brighter.
Canadian Arctic
The 30 September view covers part of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, west of Greenland. Snow- and ice-covered islands, fjords, exposed rock and fractured sea-ice floes are visible. ESA notes that sea ice is near its annual minimum at this time of year, so the floes in this image reflect late-summer conditions.

Caribbean
The 29 September OLCI image shows Cuba and the Bahamas. Shallow water around the islands appears turquoise against the darker tone of deeper open water. That contrast comes from water depth and seabed colour, which is why OLCI images are useful for coastal mapping.

The Synthetic Aperture Radar Altimeter (SRAL) measures the height of the ice surface and the sea surface by timing radar pulses back to the satellite. ESA says the first Greenland tracks, collected between 30 September and 4 October, closely matched a reference digital elevation model. A comparison of sea-surface height with the Copernicus Marine Service multimission sea-level anomaly product also gave results comparable to current measurements.

These checks show that the altimeter is working well. A few days of tracks cannot show a long-term trend in ice loss or sea-level rise. Those conclusions require years of consistent data.
What each instrument does
Sentinel-3C carries instruments with different jobs. They are complementary rather than competing, and each one contributes a different kind of information.

| Instrument | Main job, per EU Space Policy | First Sentinel-3C result |
|---|---|---|
| OLCI (Ocean and Land Colour Instrument) | Ocean colour, vegetation and atmospheric properties | Natural-colour images of Italy, the Canadian Arctic and the Caribbean |
| SLSTR (Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer) | Surface temperatures; supports monitoring of vegetation, clouds and fires | First observations not yet released (pending as of 8 October 2026) |
| SRAL (Synthetic Aperture Radar Altimeter), supported by MWR (Microwave Radiometer) | Sea level, waves, ice and inland waters | Greenland ice-sheet elevation and sea-surface height checks, reported as performing well |
Why Sentinel-3 matters
Sentinel-3 observes the oceans, land, ice and atmosphere on a systematic basis. Its measurements support ocean and weather forecasting, and they feed monitoring of sea temperature, colour and height, sea ice, drought, wildfires, land use, vegetation health, rivers, lakes and polar ice.

Sentinel-3C joins Sentinel-3A and Sentinel-3B and is meant to keep Sentinel-3 observations continuous. The EU Space Support Office expects Sentinel-3C to take over the primary operational role now held by Sentinel-3A.

Who runs the mission
- Development and commissioning: ESA builds and implements the Sentinel-3 satellites and runs operations through commissioning.
- Routine operations after commissioning: EUMETSAT takes responsibility for routine satellite operations and for marine and atmospheric data.
- Land, cryosphere, inland-water and offline atmospheric products: ESA delivers these.
Both agencies share management after commissioning, so the split of responsibilities will change in early 2027, when the handover is expected.
Data access
The EU Space Policy report states that Sentinel-3C data will be freely available to public and private users around the world. That is the intended policy. Availability of specific Sentinel-3C data products should be confirmed with ESA and EUMETSAT as commissioning proceeds, because products can only be released once their instrument has been calibrated.
Reading the headline numbers correctly
ESA’s 8 October report cites an average global sea-level rise of 3.64 mm per year since 1999, attributed to the Copernicus Climate Change Service. ESA says the rate is accelerating. That figure comes from the wider Copernicus record, not from Sentinel-3C alone, and should be quoted with that attribution.
The first-imagery report includes no quotation from a named person.
