To see a Bluetooth accessory’s charge in a system tray or menu bar, install a tracker that reads the same battery data your device exposes. Pairing alone is not enough: the accessory must publish a battery level through Bluetooth LE Battery Service, Hands-Free Profile (HFP), a vendor-specific service, or an operating-system device property that the tracker understands.
Support is therefore specific to the operating system, Bluetooth profile and exact accessory model. A compatible tracker can provide a convenient percentage and low-battery alerts, but it cannot recover a value that the accessory firmware never reports.
How Bluetooth battery reporting works
Bluetooth LE accessories commonly expose the standard Battery Service (BAS). Its Battery Level characteristic is a percentage from 0 to 100, with 0 fully discharged and 100 fully charged. The Bluetooth SIG’s Battery Service revision 1.1 is dated 20 December 2022.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOlder Bluetooth Classic or BR/EDR-only accessories can report charge through Hands-Free Profile indicators. Windows accessory guidance distinguishes these paths: BR/EDR-only devices use HFP battery indicators, while LE-only devices use Battery Service. Some utilities also read a battery value that Windows, macOS or Linux has already attached to the paired device.

The tracker is only a display layer. It polls or subscribes to one or more of those data paths, converts the response into a tray icon or menu-bar item, and may generate notifications. If a headset, keyboard or mouse exposes no readable battery characteristic, a utility cannot infer the percentage from the fact that it is connected.
Why the displayed percentage may be coarse
Do not assume that a displayed number is accurate to every percentage point. Microsoft’s accessory guidance calls for at least 11 reporting steps—0, 10, 20 and so on through 100—for the relevant HFP and LE reporting guidance. One HFP tray utility documents that it quantizes its displayed value to tens.
Battery readings can also move because of load and measurement noise. Microsoft advises treating BAS levels as a decrease-only attribute while the battery is discharging; an increase should generally be expected only when the battery is connected to a charger or removed and reinstalled. Firmware quality and host-side caching determine how quickly a tracker reflects a change.
Windows: choosing and configuring a tray tracker
What to look for
On Windows 10 or 11, choose a utility that explicitly lists the protocol your accessory uses. JPITSG’s Bluetooth Battery Monitor describes a .NET 8 tray app for Windows 10/11 with BLE GATT Battery Service, Bluetooth Classic HFP and a Windows device-property fallback. Those are the project’s stated capabilities, not an independent compatibility test.

A separate HFP-focused utility, bluetooth-battery-tray, says it is confirmed with the Soundcore Space Q45 and lists other headset families as expected but untested. Its own documentation says devices that report only through LE Battery Service or a proprietary channel without HFP will not work with its HFP method. Treat such model lists as developer reports, not certification.
Installation and first check
- Install a tracker whose documentation names Windows and the protocol used by your accessory.
- Pair the accessory in Settings > Bluetooth & devices, then connect it and keep it awake. A disconnected device normally cannot provide a current reading.
- Start the tracker and open its tray menu. Look for the device name, a percentage and a timestamp or refresh command.
- Charge or use the accessory for several minutes, then refresh. Compare the tracker’s value with the accessory’s own app or voice prompt if one exists.
- If no value appears, check the utility’s log or device list for the profile it detected. A tracker that reads HFP will not automatically see a BAS-only device, and the reverse is also true.
Windows 11 24H2 alerts
Windows 11 version 24H2 adds support for accessory-initiated low- and critical-battery notifications when an accessory supports BAS 1.1. BAS 1.0 and older Windows behavior is described as alerting at 5 percent. The accessory must implement the required notification behavior; upgrading Windows does not add battery reporting to a device that lacks it.
GNOME and Linux desktop trays
GNOME’s Bluetooth Battery Meter extension can place battery indicators in the panel and expose levels through quick settings. Its listing warns that some devices do not report a level until BlueZ experimental features are enabled. Enabling experimental Bluetooth functionality changes the host configuration, so follow the instructions for your Linux distribution and understand that updates can alter the setting.
Linux setup checklist
- Pair and connect the accessory with the desktop’s Bluetooth settings.
- Install the extension through the GNOME extensions mechanism and reload the shell if requested.
- Check the extension’s device list and verify that the accessory appears with a level rather than only a connection state.
- If the level is missing, consult the extension’s instructions for the required BlueZ experimental feature, enable it, restart Bluetooth and reconnect the accessory.
- Test after suspend, resume and a battery change; some devices expose the characteristic only after a fresh connection.
Linux support is especially dependent on the BlueZ version, desktop integration and permissions. A device that works on Windows may still show no level in GNOME because the Linux host cannot access the same profile or vendor service.

macOS menu-bar monitoring
Bresink’s Battery Monitor manual describes an overview for connected Bluetooth devices. Only connected devices appear there, and the manual warns that some vendors encrypt battery data in a way that blocks third-party access. A paired but idle or disconnected accessory may therefore be absent even though macOS remembers it.
macOS checks
- Connect the accessory before opening the monitor.
- Grant any Bluetooth or accessory permissions requested by macOS.
- Use the monitor’s refresh function after waking or reconnecting the device.
- If the device is listed without a percentage, its data may be encrypted, vendor-specific or unavailable through the macOS APIs used by the monitor.
ZMK keyboards: a specialist case
ZMK Battery Center is designed for keyboards running ZMK firmware and supports monitoring across Windows, macOS and Linux. Its documentation describes Linux support as limited and notes that firmware options and Bluetooth permissions matter. This is a keyboard-specific solution, not evidence that every Bluetooth mouse, headset or controller will work with it.
For a ZMK keyboard, confirm that the firmware exposes battery information, enable the required Bluetooth permission on the host and check the project’s platform notes before troubleshooting the tray display.

Troubleshooting: connected but no battery percentage
1. Confirm the accessory actually reports battery data
Check the manufacturer’s specifications or the accessory’s own companion software for a battery-level feature. A Bluetooth connection proves only that a transport link exists; it does not prove that a readable battery characteristic or indicator is available.
2. Identify the reporting profile
Determine whether the device is LE with BAS, Classic with HFP, or dependent on a proprietary service. Select a tracker that reads that path. An HFP-only utility will fail silently with many LE-only accessories, while a BAS reader cannot substitute for an HFP indicator.
3. Reconnect instead of relying on a stale cache
Disconnect and reconnect the accessory, wake it, and refresh the tracker. If the value changes only after reconnection, the accessory or host may not send spontaneous updates.

5. Test after a meaningful battery change
Use or charge the accessory long enough to cross a reporting step. A device that reports in tens can remain at 60 percent while its actual charge moves anywhere within that interval.
6. Separate firmware limits from utility bugs
If the accessory’s own software shows a level but the tray utility does not, the utility may lack the vendor protocol or host API needed for that model. If no software can show a level, the accessory may not expose one, or encryption may prevent third-party access.
Privacy and reliability considerations
A tray tracker normally needs Bluetooth access and may need to run continuously to poll devices or receive notifications. Prefer software that explains what data it reads and keeps processing local when that is a stated feature. Regardless of the utility, treat the number as an estimate constrained by the accessory’s reporting resolution and update policy, not as laboratory-grade fuel gauging.

- List your devices and platform. Record the exact model, operating system and version.
- Find the device’s protocol. Look for LE Battery Service, HFP or a documented proprietary method.
- Match the tracker. Confirm that it reads that protocol and supports your tray or menu bar.
- Check special prerequisites. These may include Windows 11 24H2, BlueZ experimental features, firmware configuration or Bluetooth permissions.
- Validate the reading. Compare several updates while charging and discharging, and note whether values are rounded or delayed.
This process avoids the most common false assumption: that every paired Bluetooth accessory has a universally readable battery percentage. The right tracker is the one aligned with the accessory’s profile, the host’s APIs and the precision you actually need.
