In the review, I will walk you through the Samsung Q70R’s features and specifications. To do so, I will analyze the TV’s design, display features, sound features, ports and connectivity features, and smart features.
Furthermore, I’ll be rating this Samsung television on a scale of one to ten at the end of each section of this review. Aside from that, I’ll also be comparing the TV to some of its biggest competitors.
Therefore, if you read this review to the end, you should have enough information to make an informed purchase decision.
My Initial Thoughts
Since releasing its first QLED television in 2017, Samsung has gone on to be one of the most sought-after television brands in history. This is due to the fact that QLED televisions offer colorful and bright picture quality.
Therefore, in order to keep up with the high demand for QLED televisions, Samsung released the Samsung Q70R in 2019. The Samsung Q70R, like any other QLED television, offers a 4K QLED display that delivers exceptional picture quality.
However, as most of us know, QLED televisions are mostly expensive and this Samsung television isn’t an exception. To be more specific, when I wrote this review article in February 2022, the Samsung Q70R had a price tag of $2,199.99.
With such a heavy price tag, does the Samsung Q70R have enough features apart from its QLED display to entice buyers? I guess reading this article all the way through is one way to find an answer to that question.
Therefore, kindly read on!
Samsung Q70R Design, Dimension, and Weight Review
To begin with, the Samsung Q70R features the sleek design that one would expect from a television costing more than $2000. Specifically, this television comes with slim bezels that surround its display screen.
To give more details, these bezels measure 0.40-inch and are made of plastic with a glossy-black finish. However, the bottom bezel is slightly thicker than the others to make room for the white ‘SAMSUNG’ inscription found at the center.
In addition to its slim bezels, the Samsung Q70R comes with a pair of thick high-quality plastic legs. As with the bezels, these legs feature a glossy-black finish.
Also, due to the quality plastic material used to make the legs, they should support the television very well without wobbling. Impressively, there are openings at the back of these legs that serve as a cable management system.
However, due to the position of the legs – the legs are set very close to the edges of the television – you will need a large table or desk to place the Samsung Q70R on.
Turning to the Samsung Q70R’s back, you will discover a plain plastic panel. Just like the legs and bezels, this television’s back panel features a glossy-black finish.
Additionally, this back panel has a really slim build. Therefore, the Samsung Q70R should look and fit perfectly on the wall when wall-mounted.
Speaking of wall-mounting, this television’s back panel features four VESA 400 x 300 mm holes for mounting the television on the wall.
Having said all that, let us now consider the Samsung Q70R’s dimension and weight. The Samsung Q70R measures 1449.5 x 61.9 x 831.2 mm (W x D x H) and weighs 24300 g.
When compared to the TCL 65S425, the Samsung Q70R is significantly heavy. To be more specific, the TCL 65S425 measures 1455 x 78.7 x 845.8 mm (W x D x H) and weighs just 17599 g.
In conclusion, the Samsung Q70R features an elegant design with an overall slim build. Furthermore, this television features two sturdy legs as well as a cable management system.
Thus, I will offer the Samsung Q70R a rating of nine out of ten in this design review section.
Samsung Q70R Display Features and Picture Quality Review
As stated earlier, the Samsung Q70R comes with a 65-inch QLED display that offers a 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution. To give more details, the term QLED stands for “quantum dot LED”.
Furthermore, unlike a typical LED display, this television’s QLED display will be able to produce brighter images and a wider range of colors. Moreover, thanks to its 4K resolution, the colors and pictures that this display renders will be very realistic and sharp.
Moving on, apart from the 4K resolution, the Samsung Q70R’s QLED display offers a brilliant contrast ratio. Specifically, this television’s display comes with a high contrast ratio of 7,250:1.
Therefore, as a display with such high contrast ratio, the Samsung Q70R’s QLED display will be able to render deep blacks. As a result, the Samsung Q70R is ideal for viewing films with lots of shadowy or dark scenes.
Also, this television is suitable for dark room viewing. You must be wondering what contrast ratio means, let me briefly explain.
The contrast ratio is the ratio between the brightest white and the darkest shade that a display is capable of producing. Furthermore, the contrast ratio of a display is the most important factor when determining the display’s black level.
Basically, a high contrast ratio means the display will be able to produce deep blacks. On the contrary, a low contrast ratio means the display will not be able to produce deep blacks.
In order words, blacks on the display will look grayish. Well, as mentioned earlier, the Samsung Q70R’s QLED display features a high contrast ratio, so you have nothing to worry about concerning contrast ratio.
Impressively, despite its high contrast ratio, the Samsung Q70R’s QLED display supports local dimming. Local dimming is a picture technique that LED/LCD display uses to enhance their contrast ratio by dimming backlight zones.
Basically, blacks on the Samsung Q70R’s QLED display will appear darker with local dimming than they would without it.
That said, the Samsung Q70R’s QLED display features an outstanding peak brightness of 747 nits. Therefore, you will be able to watch movies on the Samsung Q70R comfortably in bright or well-lit areas.
As a matter of fact, when watching movies in bright areas, you don’t have to worry about reflections. This is due to the fact that the Samsung Q70R’s QLED display features a semi-gloss coating that prevents screen glare and reduces the density of reflections.
However, despite all its excellent features, this television’s display lacks in one major area which is the viewing angles. To be more specific, the display offers poor viewing angles.
As a result, colors and pictures will lose accuracy when viewing the Samsung Q70R from the sides or off-center.
On a positive note, the Samsung Q70R’s QLED display supports HDR in HDR 10+, HLG, and Quantum HDR 8X formats. For clarity, HDR is a picture technology that boosts the color accuracy and brightness of a display.
Thus, when this display is viewing HDR-supported content, the picture quality will be really realistic and life-like. Just so you know, you can find HDR-supported content on streaming apps such as Amazon Prime Video and HBO.
Moving on, the Samsung Q70R’s QLED display offers a fast response time of 13.7 milliseconds. Briefly, response time is the amount of time that it takes a display to change from a particular color to another.
Therefore, with a response time as fast as 13.7 ms, there will be minimal blur trails when viewing fast-motion content on the Samsung Q70R’s QLED display. As a result, the Samsung Q70R is ideal for watching fast-motion content like sports and action movies.
Apart from being ideal for watching fast-motion content, the Samsung Q70R is also suitable for gaming. This is due to its low input lag of 15 milliseconds.
Just to be clear, Input lag refers to the time that it takes a display to respond to signal input from external sources like a wireless gamepad. Therefore, the less input lag there is, the better the gaming experience.
In conclusion, the Samsung Q70R’s QLED display offers a brilliant performance for both movie lovers and gamers. However, this display comes with poor viewing angles.
Regardless, I will rate the Samsung Q70R a nine out of ten in this display review section.
Samsung Q70R Sound Features Review
In terms of sound, the Samsung Q70R comes with a pair of 20-watts down-firing speakers. These speakers deliver excellent sound quality and they are loud enough to fill a large room with sound.
Moreover, as one would expect from a TV of its caliber, the Samsung Q70R comes with a built-in subwoofer. As a result, this television will be able to create the right amount of bass for enjoying the rumbling and thumping sounds in movies.
Also, thanks to its subwoofer, this Samsung television is ideal for watching bass-heavy movies or listening to bass-heavy music.
That said, the Samsung Q70R’s speakers are capable of producing clear and understandable dialogue. Hence, when two or more characters are discussing in a movie, viewers will be able to clearly hear and distinguish what they are saying.
In addition to its speaker’s clear dialogue production, the Samsung Q70R comes with Dolby Digital Plus. This audio technology improves the surround sound of the television’s speakers, allowing them to deliver a cinema-like sound experience.
When it comes to distortion, the Samsung Q70R’s speakers produce minimal distortion. In order to prove this, I will now be discussing the television’s result on a THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) test.
Briefly, the THD test is a sound test that evaluates the level of distortion that a sound device is capable of producing. Furthermore, according to this test, a score of 1% or less means the sound equipment produces minimal distortion.
Meanwhile, a score higher than 1% means that the sound equipment is capable of generating a noticeable amount of distortion. Thankfully, on the THD test, the Samsung Q70R delivered a score of 0.705%.
Therefore, even at the maximum volume level, the distortion that this television’s speakers will produce will be very minimal. As a matter of fact, if the television is at a medium or moderate volume level, distortion will be totally inaudible.
For the curious ones, distortion in this context is the alternation of sound frequencies, resulting in the production of less-appealing sound quality.
All things considered, I will offer the Samsung Q70R a rating of nine out of ten in this sound review section.
Samsung Q70R Ports and Connectivity Features Review
As one would expect from a $2000+ television, the Samsung Q70R offers a wide range of ports. However, as with most televisions nowadays, these ports are housed in a compartment at the television’s back.
As a result, if you eventually wall-mount the Samsung Q70R, you won’t be able to access these ports easily. Now that we have known where the television’s ports are located, let us now discuss the kinds of ports the television features.
To start with, the Samsung Q70R comes with four HDMI ports. As with most modern televisions, one of these HDMI ports supports ARC (Audio Return Channel).
Therefore, connecting a soundbar to the television shouldn’t be a problem thanks to the HDMI-ARC port. Apart from the HDMI ports, the Samsung Q70R features two USB ports, an Ethernet port, optical audio out, and composite video input.
In addition to that, this television also has an RF port for the connection of an antenna. When it comes to wireless connectivity, the Samsung Q70R offers Bluetooth 5.0 and a built-in 802.11 ac WIFI.
Moving away from all that, let us talk about the television’s remote. The Samsung Q70R comes with a Samsung TM1950C remote control.
This is the same remote control that you will find with other Samsung QLED televisions like the Samsung QN75Q60RAFXZA. Furthermore, this remote control is made of thick plastic and it features a matte-black texture.
However, due to the small size of the remote, you won’t find more than 13 buttons on it. Obviously, with a total number of 13 buttons, this remote control lacks a full number pad.
However, the remote features several dedicated buttons for quick access to streaming apps like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and Hulu. Also, you will find a circular navigation button at the center of the remote.
Additionally, there is a white “SAMSUNG” inscription at the bottom of the remote for brand recognition. Impressively, this television’s remote features a built-in microphone for voice input via Samsung’s exclusive voice AI (Bixby).
In conclusion, the Samsung Q70R offers a good number of ports and a remote that supports voice input. For this reason, I will rate the Samsung Q70R a nine out of ten in this ports and connectivity review section.
Samsung Q70R Smart Features Review
Like most Samsung televisions, the Samsung Q70R comes with the Tizen operating system. Furthermore, the interface of this operating system is referred to as Smart Hub.
To give more detail, the Smart Hub interface is user-friendly, smooth, and lag-free. However, the joy of navigating this smooth interface might be short-lived due to constant ad pop-ups.
To make the situation worse, the ads cannot be disabled. On a positive note, the Smart Hub interface has a horizontal navigation menu at the bottom that features several streaming apps.
These streaming apps include Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Sling TV, Amazon Prime Video, HBO, and so much more. Moreover, through the Samsung app store, you can download additional streaming apps on the Tizen operating system.
Besides, you can also stream/share content from your smartphone to the Samsung Q70R using the SmartThings app. As a matter of fact, you can also use the SmartThing app to control the television in case you misplace your remote control.
In conclusion, the Samsung Q70R comes with an operating system that offers numerous streaming apps. However, the interface of this operating system features ads that cannot be disabled.
Therefore, to conclude this smart features review section, I will be rating the Samsung Q70R an eight out of ten.
