Verdict: The Samsung 990 EVO Plus is a strong, efficient mainstream-to-performance NVMe SSD that fixes the original 990 EVO’s biggest weaknesses. Its newer TLC NAND, improved controller implementation, fast PCIe 4.0 performance, and unusual PCIe 5.0 x2 compatibility make it a versatile choice for gaming PCs, laptops, and general-purpose workstations.
It is not a full-bandwidth PCIe 5.0 x4 drive, and it is not automatically the best value. The 990 EVO Plus is most attractive when its street price is below or close to other high-end PCIe 4.0 TLC SSDs, or when you specifically want its single-sided 4TB design, low power use, Samsung Magician support, or PCIe 5.0 x2 compatibility.
What is the Samsung 990 EVO Plus?
The Samsung 990 EVO Plus is the improved successor to Samsung’s original 990 EVO. It keeps the earlier model’s unusual dual-interface design: it can operate as a PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD or as a PCIe 5.0 x2 SSD. The important change is underneath the label. Samsung replaces the original drive’s weaker flash configuration with newer TLC NAND and a more mature controller implementation.
Samsung rates the 990 EVO Plus for sequential read speeds of up to 7,150 MB/s on the 1TB model and 7,250 MB/s on the 2TB and 4TB models. All three capacities are rated for sequential writes up to 6,300 MB/s. The drive is DRAM-less and uses Host Memory Buffer, or HMB, rather than a dedicated onboard DRAM cache.

Samsung claims that the Plus model delivers up to 50% higher performance and approximately 73% greater power efficiency than the original 990 EVO. Those are Samsung’s own comparisons, not universal independent-test results. Independent testing does show a substantial improvement in large sequential writes, although the drive is less dominant in some small-file and folder-transfer workloads.

Samsung lists dimensions of up to 80.15 × 22.15 × 2.38 mm and an operating temperature range of 0–70°C, measured through S.M.A.R.T. The datasheet also lists a 1.5-million-hour MTBF, TRIM, S.M.A.R.T. monitoring, AES 256-bit full-disk encryption, TCG/Opal 2.0, and IEEE 1667 encrypted-drive support.
The biggest change: newer TLC NAND
The original 990 EVO’s main problem was not its unusual interface. It was the combination of relatively modest flash performance and inconsistent results in demanding transfers. Tom’s Hardware identifies the 990 EVO Plus as using Samsung’s 236-layer V8 TLC NAND, replacing the V6P TLC used by the original 990 EVO.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat newer flash helps the Plus model better saturate a PCIe 4.0 connection while also improving efficiency. The revised drive still uses a DRAM-less controller, but the controller and flash combination is more convincing than the one used in the first 990 EVO.
This distinction matters because “EVO” is not a guarantee of a particular performance level. The Plus is not simply the old 990 EVO with a firmware tweak or a higher number on the box. It is a materially revised product, and the improvement is most visible during larger sustained transfers.
How the PCIe 5.0 x2 interface works
The 990 EVO Plus is not a conventional full-speed PCIe 5.0 SSD. It does not use four PCIe 5.0 lanes. Instead, it supports either four PCIe 4.0 lanes or two PCIe 5.0 lanes.
That design can be useful in a system with a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot that provides only two lanes. A PCIe 4.0-only SSD may be limited by that slot, while the 990 EVO Plus can use the available PCIe 5.0 x2 connection. Tom’s Hardware also identifies niche applications in add-in RAID cards and other configurations where each downstream M.2 slot receives two lanes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For most buyers, however, the drive will operate as a fast PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD. A PCIe 5.0 label should not be interpreted as a promise of full Gen 5 x4 performance. Before buying, check the motherboard or laptop manual for:
- Whether the M.2 slot supports NVMe rather than SATA-only storage.
- Whether it accepts the M.2 2280 length.
- Whether the slot exposes PCIe 4.0 x4, PCIe 5.0 x2, or another lane configuration.
- Whether using the slot disables or shares lanes with a graphics slot, SATA port, or another expansion slot.
- Whether the drive fits beneath the system’s M.2 cover, thermal pad, or laptop chassis.
The drive is backward-compatible with PCIe 4.0 x4 and PCIe 3.0 x4 systems. In a PCIe 3.0 computer, it can still function as a storage upgrade, but the older interface will limit performance well below the published PCIe 4.0 figures.
Real-world performance: fast, but not unbeatable
Samsung’s sequential figures are best-case manufacturer ratings measured under specified conditions. They describe the drive’s ceiling in an appropriate test system, not the speed every user will see while installing games, copying a mixed folder, or working with a nearly full drive.

Independent testing from Tom’s Hardware characterizes the 990 EVO Plus as a solid all-around drive with reasonable performance and good power efficiency. The review’s principal criticism was launch pricing rather than a fundamental performance defect.
PCWorld’s CrystalDiskMark 8 testing found excellent sequential results, with the 990 EVO Plus ahead of the comparison drives in that chart. That is the type of workload in which the drive’s high rated throughput is easiest to observe.
The picture was less perfect in smaller and more fragmented workloads. The Plus model was only marginally faster than the original 990 EVO in PCWorld’s 4K tests and fell behind competing drives in that portion of the comparison. It was also slightly slower than the original model in a 48GB folder transfer, with much of the difference appearing during the folder write.
The strongest result came in PCWorld’s 450GB write test. The 990 EVO Plus was considerably faster overall than the plain 990 EVO. It eventually slowed after approximately 220GB, but its post-slowdown write rate remained around 1.2–1.25GB/s, which is respectable for a DRAM-less consumer SSD.
The practical interpretation is straightforward:
- Operating systems and applications: Excellent. Booting, launching programs, and normal desktop work should feel fast.
- Gaming: Very good. Game load times will be competitive, although moving a game library may expose differences between drives.
- Large file transfers: Much better than the original 990 EVO, especially before the write cache fills.
- Small random workloads: Good, but not necessarily class-leading against the best DRAM-equipped PCIe 4.0 drives.
- Heavy workstation writes: Usable, but a high-end DRAM-equipped SSD may be a better choice for repeated, sustained workloads.
DRAM-less design and Host Memory Buffer
The 990 EVO Plus does not have dedicated DRAM on the SSD. Instead, it uses Host Memory Buffer to access a small portion of the host system’s memory for mapping information. This reduces the drive’s component count, power use, and manufacturing cost.

HMB can deliver strong everyday performance, and Samsung positions the 990 EVO Plus as approaching DRAM-equipped performance in some random-workload measurements. The newer flash also helps the drive perform better than the original 990 EVO despite retaining a DRAM-less architecture.
HMB is not identical to a dedicated DRAM cache in every situation. Differences can appear in sustained writes, very full drives, heavy multitasking, or workloads that repeatedly access large and complex data sets. That does not make the 990 EVO Plus a poor drive; it simply places it below the strongest DRAM-equipped SSDs for some professional workloads.
Thermals, power use, and laptop suitability
Samsung emphasizes the 990 EVO Plus’s power efficiency and nickel-coated heat shield. Its published average active power figures are:
| Capacity | Average active read | Average active write |
|---|---|---|
| 1TB | 4.3W | 4.2W |
| 2TB | 4.6W | 4.2W |
| 4TB | 5.5W | 4.8W |
Those figures help explain why Tom’s Hardware considers the drive a good fit for laptops and portable systems. The 4TB model is also single-sided, which is useful in a laptop or compact system with limited clearance. Single-sided construction does not guarantee compatibility, though: the laptop still needs the right M.2 length, screw position, thermal pad arrangement, and physical height.

If the slot has no adequate cover or heatsink, an optional M.2 NVMe SSD heatsink can help manage temperatures. It is not a required purchase for every installation, and an incorrectly fitted heatsink can be worse than no heatsink if it prevents proper contact or interferes with the motherboard cover.
Maintain reasonable airflow and do not treat the 0–70°C operating range as a target temperature. Sustained workloads can trigger thermal throttling if the drive is installed in a cramped, poorly ventilated location.

Endurance and warranty
Samsung rates endurance at 600 TBW for 1TB, 1,200 TBW for 2TB, and 2,400 TBW for 4TB. TBW means terabytes written and is a warranty endurance limit, not a prediction that the drive will fail immediately after reaching the number.
All capacities carry a five-year limited warranty. The coverage is limited by the stated warranty period or the applicable written-terabytes limit under Samsung’s warranty terms. It should not be interpreted as unlimited write coverage.
For a normal gaming or productivity PC, even the 1TB model’s rating is substantial. Buyers who routinely generate and overwrite large video files, virtual-machine images, databases, or scratch data should consider both the higher endurance of the larger models and whether a stronger workstation-oriented drive is more appropriate.
Security features
The 990 EVO Plus supports AES 256-bit full-disk encryption, TCG/Opal 2.0, and IEEE 1667 encrypted-drive support. These capabilities can matter in business laptops and managed systems that need hardware-backed storage-security compatibility.
Support on the drive does not automatically encrypt every installation. Actual use depends on the operating system, firmware, security policy, and platform configuration. Users should verify how their operating system or organization deploys BitLocker, hardware encryption, Opal management, or other storage-security tools before relying on a particular mode.
Samsung Magician software
Samsung Magician is one of the stronger parts of Samsung’s SSD ecosystem. Depending on the drive and platform, it provides firmware updates, drive-health information, benchmarking, performance optimization, over-provisioning, secure erase, data migration, and security-related tools.

Feature availability varies by model and by whether the drive is a retail Samsung product, an OEM drive, or another supported Samsung storage device. Samsung’s current documentation should be checked for operating-system support for a specific feature. Tom’s Hardware reports support on Windows and macOS, but individual functions may not be identical between those platforms.
Samsung’s firmware page listed firmware ISO 2B2QKXG7 for the 990 EVO Plus, dated December 2024, with improvements aimed at compatibility with certain newer systems. Firmware versions change, so treat that version as a dated reference rather than a permanent latest release. After installing the SSD, open Magician or Samsung’s current support page and check whether a newer firmware is available. Back up important data and do not interrupt a firmware update.
Which capacity should you buy?
1TB: for a basic system or moderate game library
The 1TB model is suitable for an operating-system and application drive, a work laptop upgrade, or a gaming PC with a moderate library. It has the same rated 6,300 MB/s sequential write speed as the larger versions, but its rated sequential read speed is slightly lower at 7,150 MB/s. Its 850K random-read rating and 600 TBW endurance are also the lowest in the range.
Choose 1TB when the price is clearly better and you have another drive for large games or media. Remember that a 1TB drive provides less usable space than the advertised capacity after formatting and system overhead.

2TB: the best general-purpose balance
The 2TB model is the sensible default for most gaming PCs, productivity systems, and laptop upgrades. It reaches the 7,250 MB/s rated read speed, raises endurance to 1,200 TBW, and provides enough space for an operating system, applications, documents, and a substantial game library.
For many buyers, the Samsung 990 EVO Plus 2TB is the capacity to compare first—not because it is always the cheapest per terabyte, but because it avoids the space limitations of a 1TB system drive without the higher absolute cost of 4TB.
4TB: for large libraries and project files
The 4TB model is aimed at users who want one high-capacity internal drive for games, video projects, photo catalogs, virtual machines, or large creative applications. Its 2,400 TBW rating is twice the 2TB model’s rating, and it remains single-sided.
Do not select the 4TB version solely because the specification table shows a higher random-read and random-write rating. The main advantages are capacity, endurance, and the convenience of a single large drive. Compare the current price per usable terabyte because NAND pricing and sales can make the 2TB or 4TB model the better value at different times.

| Large sustained writes | Considerably better in independent 450GB testing | Slower and more prone to exposing its weaker flash configuration |
| 4TB option | Yes; single-sided | Not part of the same Plus capacity range in the supplied specifications |
The Plus model is the one to buy between the two unless the original 990 EVO is available at a substantially lower price and your workload is light. The original drive’s unusual PCIe 5.0 x2 compatibility remains interesting, but the Plus is a much more complete product.
990 EVO Plus versus the competition
Samsung 990 PRO
Samsung positions the 990 PRO as its higher-performance PCIe 4.0 product. It is the more natural choice for buyers who prioritize stronger sustained or random performance and are willing to pay for a high-end, DRAM-equipped design.
The 990 EVO Plus is preferable when lower power use, the PCIe 5.0 x2 option, a single-sided 4TB model, or a lower price matters more. Compare the current prices, endurance ratings, and workload results rather than assuming that the 990 PRO is automatically worth the premium. The Samsung 990 PRO becomes especially attractive when it is discounted to the same price as the 990 EVO Plus.
WD_BLACK SN850X
The WD_BLACK SN850X is another important alternative for gaming and high-performance desktop systems. SanDisk lists PCIe Gen4 x4 operation, TLC NAND, and up to 7,300 MB/s read and 6,600 MB/s write speeds for its 2TB model. That model is rated for up to 1,200K random-read IOPS, 1,100K random-write IOPS, 1,200 TBW endurance, and a five-year limited warranty.
Recommended Free Tools
The WD_BLACK SN850X is a particularly relevant comparison when the buyer has a normal PCIe 4.0 x4 desktop slot and does not need the 990 EVO Plus’s PCIe 5.0 x2 compatibility. Pick between them using current pricing, game-library needs, thermal conditions, and independent workload results rather than sequential ratings alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Price and value: buy the deal, not the label
The 990 EVO Plus is price-sensitive. It is compelling when priced below or close to comparable high-end PCIe 4.0 TLC drives. It is less compelling when a DRAM-equipped Samsung 990 PRO, WD_BLACK SN850X, or similar TLC SSD costs the same or less.
Samsung’s direct-store pricing and inventory can differ substantially from sale pricing at major retailers, and SSD prices can change quickly. The 1TB listing has also appeared out of stock on Samsung’s US product page. Do not use a single advertised price as a permanent reference point; compare the exact capacity, warranty status, seller, and whether the product is a retail model rather than an OEM part.

Compatibility and installation checklist
The 990 EVO Plus uses the common M.2 2280 form factor and an M-key NVMe interface. Before opening the computer, confirm all of the following:
- The system has an M.2 slot that supports NVMe PCIe storage.
- The slot accepts an 80 mm-long 2280 module.
- The motherboard or laptop manual supports the desired PCIe generation and lane arrangement.
- The drive will not conflict with a motherboard heatsink, laptop cover, battery, or memory module.
- You have the correct M.2 retention screw or mounting mechanism.
- Important data is backed up before cloning or replacing the existing drive.
For a new Windows installation
- Back up important files and record your recovery key if the existing system uses device encryption.
- Shut down the computer, disconnect power, and follow the manufacturer’s anti-static and service instructions.
- Install the SSD into the correct M.2 slot at the recommended angle and secure it without overtightening.
- Reassemble the thermal cover or pad exactly as designed. Remove any protective film from a thermal pad before fitting it.
- Enter the firmware setup and confirm that the drive is detected.
- Install the operating system in the boot mode supported by the system, normally UEFI on current computers.
- Install Samsung Magician after setup to check health, firmware, and available drive-management functions.
For cloning an existing drive
Cloning is convenient, but it is not a substitute for a backup. Confirm that the destination has enough capacity for the source’s used data, not merely the same nominal capacity. After cloning, shut down before removing or disconnecting the old boot drive, then verify that the system boots from the 990 EVO Plus.
An M.2 NVMe SSD enclosure can be useful during migration: it allows the new drive to be connected over USB for cloning, or lets you reuse the old SSD as an external backup drive after the migration. Enclosure performance depends on its USB interface and controller, so it will not deliver the SSD’s internal PCIe 4.0 speeds.
Common installation problems
The drive is not detected
Power down and reseat the module. Then check whether the M.2 slot supports NVMe, whether the motherboard requires a firmware update for newer SSDs, and whether installing an M.2 drive disables a shared SATA port or expansion slot. On a desktop, test the drive in the motherboard’s primary M.2 slot if the manual distinguishes between slots.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The drive appears smaller than expected
Some capacity is lost to decimal-versus-binary capacity calculations, formatting, partitions, and reserved space. Check Disk Management in Windows or the equivalent storage utility in your operating system before assuming that the SSD is defective.
Performance is much lower than expected
Confirm that the drive is running at PCIe 4.0 x4 or PCIe 5.0 x2 rather than PCIe 3.0 or a reduced-lane mode. Check the motherboard firmware, chipset drivers, power settings, temperature, and benchmark conditions. A nearly full SSD, an external USB connection, or a heavily fragmented folder workload can also produce results far below the sequential rating.
The SSD slows during a large copy
This can be normal. TurboWrite 2.0 uses a dynamic write-cache strategy, so performance can drop after enough data has been written to exhaust the fast cache. The 990 EVO Plus still maintained approximately 1.2–1.25GB/s after the slowdown in PCWorld’s 450GB test, but sustained behavior varies with capacity, free space, temperature, and workload.
The M.2 screw is missing
Check the motherboard accessory box and the original system hardware before buying anything. The screw is often supplied with the motherboard or laptop rather than the SSD. If it genuinely cannot be found, a compatible M.2 2280 mounting screw kit is a task-enabling fix, not a standard accessory required for the drive.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Samsung 990 EVO Plus a full PCIe 5.0 SSD?
No. It supports PCIe 5.0 x2 or PCIe 4.0 x4. It can be useful in a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot that provides two lanes, but it is not a full-bandwidth PCIe 5.0 x4 drive.
Does the 990 EVO Plus have DRAM?
No. It is DRAM-less and uses Host Memory Buffer. HMB supports strong everyday performance, but it does not behave identically to dedicated DRAM in every sustained or random workload.
Which 990 EVO Plus capacity is best?
The 2TB model is the best general-purpose choice for most gaming PCs, laptops, and productivity systems. Choose 1TB for a smaller system drive and 4TB for large game libraries, media collections, virtual machines, or project files.
Does the Samsung 990 EVO Plus need a heatsink?
Not always. A motherboard’s M.2 heatsink is useful during sustained workloads, but ordinary installations may work without an additional heatsink. Laptop buyers should follow the system manufacturer’s thermal design and verify clearance.
The Bottom Line
The Samsung 990 EVO Plus is the 990 EVO that should have launched first: faster, more efficient, and substantially better at large transfers while retaining the flexible PCIe 4.0 x4/PCIe 5.0 x2 interface. It is an excellent mainstream-to-performance SSD, particularly in the 2TB capacity. Buy it when the price is competitive and its efficiency, single-sided 4TB option, Samsung software, or lane flexibility matters. If a 990 PRO, SN850X, or another strong DRAM-equipped TLC drive costs the same, compare the workload results before choosing the Plus.
