Short answer: Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition is the closest overall game to both Dragon Age: Origins and Baldur’s Gate 3. It combines a consequential party, origin characters, companion quests, systemic turn-based combat and four-player co-op. It does not use D&D 5e, however. Choose Dragon Age: Origins for BioWare-style companion drama and origin stories, Solasta: Crown of the Magister for authentic 5e rules, or Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous for huge character-building depth and a 100–200-hour campaign.
That split matters because Origins and BG3 overlap in party storytelling and choice-driven role-playing, but not in combat: Origins is real-time with pause, while BG3 is turn-based. The list below routes you by the part you are trying to replace.

Which game like BG3 should you play first?
If you are unsure, start with Divinity: Original Sin 2. It is the only recommendation here that directly combines Larian’s encounter design, origin characters, environmental combat and four-player party play. Use this quick route if one part of BG3 mattered most:

What does “like Dragon Age: Origins and Baldur’s Gate 3” actually mean?
Both games let a controllable party shape the story, but they deliver that fantasy differently. A useful alternative should match at least three of these traits: party members with distinct personalities, origins or backgrounds that change how the world reacts, approval and personal quests, meaningful skill checks, tactical positioning, and replayability through classes or party composition.
Origins launched on November 2, 2009, for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It is a BioWare real-time-with-pause RPG with six origin stories, a six-person roster and a Blight-and-succession plot. Baldur’s Gate 3 is Larian’s cinematic turn-based D&D 5e game: PC in August 2023, PS5 in September 2023 and Xbox Series X|S in December 2023, with a level cap of 12 and video-game adjustments such as bonus-action jumping and shoving.
HostedGG describes BG3 as “a deep tactical combat system, a party of companions you actually care about, and a story that bends around your choices with almost unsettling attentiveness.” Almost no successor matches all three at once, so the best choice depends on which part of that combination you miss.

What are the best games like Dragon Age: Origins and Baldur’s Gate 3?
1. Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition
Best for: the closest overall match, especially if you want co-op and systemic combat.
Released on September 14, 2017, Divinity: Original Sin 2 is Larian’s previous party CRPG and the clearest bridge between the two games. TableForge calls it “the closest match to Baldur’s Gate 3, because BG3 was built on top of it.” Its six origin characters, personal quests, party consequences and up-to-four-player co-op explain that judgment. The official product description says: “Gather your party. Master deep, tactical combat. Venture as a party of up to four – but know that only one of you will have the chance to become a God.”
Combat is turn-based and built around elemental surfaces, height, armor stripping and environmental combinations rather than 5e spell slots. You can create a custom Human, Lizard, Elf, Dwarf or Undead, or choose an origin character. There are more than 200 skills across 12 schools. The game supports single-player, online and split-screen co-op, Game Master mode, Steam Workshop and 4K output.
It is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and iOS. Steam listed it at $44.99 in October 2026; the Divine Edition was $59.99 with art books, a map, soundtrack and art pack. Steam reported 95% positive English reviews from 83,909 reviews, with 92% of 753 recent 30-day English reviews positive; the page also lists a 93 Metacritic score. Those are storefront and aggregate figures, not independent testing.
The trade-offs are clear: there is no Faerûn, no D&D 5e class framework, less cinematic dialogue and a notoriously rough opening in Fort Joy. Its systems can feel more punishing than BG3. If you can live without 5e, it is the game to play tonight.
2. Dragon Age: Origins – Ultimate Edition
Best for: companion writing, approval, romance and origin-driven storytelling.

Origins is the historical link between classic Baldur’s Gate and modern party RPGs. Its six origins alter early quests and how characters treat you, while companions such as Morrigan, Alistair and Leliana develop through approval, conflict, personal missions and romance. TableForge calls it “the closest match for BG3’s companion drama and origin-driven story.”
Combat is real-time with pause, not turn-based. You queue abilities, pause to issue commands and manage a six-person roster. That makes it a poor substitute if your priority is BG3’s dice-driven battlefield, but an excellent one if you are grieving the camp conversations and political choices. The Blight and succession story still supports major faction and ending decisions.
Two Average Gamers’ June 2026 figures put the campaign at about 40–80 hours and the PC price around $14.99. The PC version is the preferred edition; PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 copies are last-generation products. It has no co-op, no 5e rules and visibly dated presentation. Buy it for the people and origins, not modern cinematic polish.
3. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous
Best for: players who found BG3’s build system too restrained.
Owlcat’s 2021 CRPG uses Pathfinder First Edition, a denser cousin of D&D 3.5. GameSpot lists 25 classes, 12 companions, nine Mythic Paths and romance. Mythic choices such as angel, demon, lich and swarm reshape the story, party relationships and ending. You can switch between turn-based combat and real-time with pause, making it the most flexible combat bridge for someone who likes both Origins and BG3.
The campaign runs approximately 100–200 hours. G2A News gives it a 90% similarity score, while Press Start Gaming in October 2026 called it a benchmark for unfiltered agency and build excess. It is available on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

The opening can overwhelm newcomers, the interface assumes rules knowledge and it is single-player. 4. Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader
Best for: modern turn-based party role-playing in a grimdark science-fiction setting.
Released in December 2023 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rogue Trader puts you in command of a voidship and a crew of zealots, psykers and aliens. It is fully turn-based, with no real-time-with-pause option. Conviction paths—Iconoclast, Dogmatic and Heretical—create alignment-like consequences, while companions, romances and extensive builds provide the party drama that many BG3 players want.

G2A’s similarity score is 87%. The campaign is approximately 100–130 hours. A Switch 2 version was listed for 2025, and the Void Shadows and Lex Imperialis expansions add romance and faction-warfare content in the 2026 listings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThis is not fantasy or D&D. Battles are more grid-based and number-heavy, and the 40K setting is deliberately harsh. Pick it when you want Owlcat’s choice-heavy writing with a new universe.
5. Solasta: Crown of the Magister
Best for: the closest implementation of tabletop D&D 5e rules.
Solasta uses the D&D 5e System Reference Document: spell slots, concentration, saving throws, reactions, light and vertical positioning. You create a four-person party, and post-launch updates added four-player co-op. GameSpot lists October 20, 2020, while other roundups list the PC release in 2021; treat it as a 2020–2021 release.
Its combat is the reason to play. Characters interact with height, darkness and line of sight in ways that feel close to tabletop sessions. The campaign is about 40 hours, and G2A gives it a 77% similarity score but only 2/5 for companions. It is on PC, Xbox and later PlayStation 5. Two Average Gamers’ 2026 estimate puts it around $39.99.
Writing, facial animation and production values are functional rather than cinematic. Solasta II entered Early Access on March 12, 2026, on Unreal Engine 5, with voiced cinematic dialogue, but its opening build had a limited campaign and level cap. Treat the first game as the complete purchase and the sequel as an unfinished follow-up.
6. Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire
Best for: dense companion writing, faction politics and classic isometric role-playing.
Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity (March 26, 2015) and Deadfire (2018 on PC, 2020 on consoles) use their own rules rather than D&D. Both are text-heavy, single-player party RPGs with strong companions and political choices. Deadfire adds ship and archipelago exploration, while its optional turn-based mode arrived in January 2019.
G2A scores each at 83%. G2A also reports that a full turn-based mode for Pillars of Eternity – Definitive Edition arrived on April 6, 2026, which lowers the barrier for players coming directly from BG3. HostedGG identifies Deadfire as a storytelling and companion pick.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The games are less cinematic and more dependent on reading. Deadfire’s main plot is shorter than its side content suggests. Choose the series when dialogue, faction consequences and world-building matter more than presentation.
7. Disco Elysium: The Final Cut
Best for: investigation, dialogue and skill checks when combat is optional.
Disco Elysium has no conventional party combat. Instead, your skills become competing inner voices that argue over investigations, politics and everyday decisions. The Final Cut launched on PC in 2021 after the original 2019 release and is available on PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox, Switch and Mac.
Two Average Gamers estimates 30–45 hours and about $39.99. G2A’s 73% combat-weighted similarity score understates its value for writing-first players. It is the best answer to “I want choices and consequences, but I can live without tactical battles.”

8. Wasteland 3
Best for: turn-based squad tactics and two-player co-op.
Released August 27, 2020, Wasteland 3 sends a squad through post-apocalyptic Colorado. Its turn-based battles, branching moral decisions and two-player co-op make it a practical choice for partners. G2A gives it an 80% similarity score.
You build a squad more than recruit a cast of novelistic, romanceable companions, so it is weaker than Origins or BG3 on camp drama. It is available on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Choose it for cooperative tactics and difficult political choices, not fantasy atmosphere.
9. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Best for: a polished, modern turn-based RPG outside the isometric CRPG format.
Recommended Free Tools
Sandfall Interactive released Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 on April 24, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its turn-based battles add real-time parries and dodges, and its story follows an expedition opposing the Paintress, who erases people above a certain age.

The same outlet reports five million early sales, a 92 Metacritic score and nine Game Awards 2025 wins, including Game of the Year; those figures should be understood as that outlet’s report rather than an independently verified awards tally here.
There is no co-op, no D&D ruleset and no open-ended quest design comparable to BG3. It belongs on this list because it delivers a modern companion-led turn-based story, not because it is an isometric CRPG clone.

- Planescape: Torment Enhanced Edition: a 1999 Black Isle writing-first ancestor; combat is its weak point. Two Average Gamers estimates 25–50 hours and about $19.99.

- Neverwinter Nights 2 Enhanced Edition: an Obsidian D&D 3.5 game from October 31, 2006, with toolsets and campaign modules.
- Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic I and II: BioWare and Obsidian choice-and-companion classics using a d20 foundation.

- ZERO PARADES: Director’s Cut: G2A’s 2026 dialogue and fail-forward recommendation, with a 67% similarity score and less emphasis on combat.
Are there co-op games like Baldur’s Gate 3?
Yes. Divinity: Original Sin 2 supports up to four players online or in split-screen, making it the strongest co-op substitute. Solasta also supports four-player co-op, Rogue Trader offers co-op in the 2026 listings, and Wasteland 3 supports two players. Dragon Age: Origins, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, Pillars and Disco Elysium are single-player.

What is the current Baldur’s Gate and Larian sequel situation?
Larian has confirmed that it will not make Baldur’s Gate 3 expansions or Baldur’s Gate 4. Its next game is a new, original Divinity project announced at The Game Awards 2025, with co-op planned at launch according to later AMA coverage. FRVR reported that Early Access is expected no earlier than 2028 and that a PlayStation disc release is unlikely.
Swen Vincke said on January 20, 2026: “Sales for both BG3 and D:OS2 have been incredible since the announcement of Divinity. D:OS2 really surprised us by having its best month since release in 2017. Wish I’d removed the squirrel in time :)” Bloomberg reporting attributed more than 20 million BG3 copies to Vincke through December 2025. Alinea Analytics later estimated 23.2 million copies and more than $1.2 billion in revenue in October 2026, including an estimated 18.7 million on Steam, 2.9 million on PS5 and 1.6 million on Xbox; those are third-party estimates, not Larian disclosures.
IGN also reported Steam peak concurrent players above 100,000 more than two and a half years after launch. An HBO adaptation of BG3 was reported as in development with Craig Mazin producing, but a television project is not a gameplay substitute.
How to choose without getting overwhelmed
- Pick your combat model. Choose turn-based for DOS2, Solasta, Rogue Trader, Wasteland 3 or Expedition 33; choose real-time with pause for Origins, Tyranny or classic Pillars; choose either mode in WotR or Deadfire.
- Decide whether companions or rules come first. For approval, romance and camp drama, start with Origins or Deadfire. For 5e mechanics, choose Solasta. For build complexity, choose WotR.
- Set the time commitment. A 30–50-hour game includes Disco Elysium, Solasta and Expedition 33; DOS2 is 60–100 hours; WotR can reach 200.
- Check the platform before buying. Origins is best on PC, while DOS2, WotR, Solasta and the other modern recommendations have broader console support.
- Accept the presentation trade-off. None of these games matches BG3’s voice acting and cinematics. Older games trade visual polish for deeper text, systems or companion writing.
How we picked these recommendations
The ranking weighs six equal questions used by G2A News: how much party control, choice, combat depth, build variety, companion quality and player freedom each game provides. It also accounts for the specific split between Origins and BG3: real-time versus turn-based combat, BioWare-style approval versus Larian-style environmental systems, ruleset, co-op, campaign length, setting and current platform availability. Similarity percentages are editorial similarity scores, not review scores.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the closest game to Baldur’s Gate 3?
Divinity: Original Sin 2 is the closest overall match because it comes from Larian and shares origin characters, systemic turn-based encounters, companion quests and four-player co-op. Its armor-and-elements rules are Larian’s own system, so it is not a substitute for D&D 5e.
Which BG3-like game has the best character building?
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous offers the deepest build space here through Pathfinder 1e classes, multiclass options and nine Mythic Paths. That depth also creates a steeper learning curve and more demanding interface than BG3.
Is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 like BG3?
It is adjacent rather than mechanically similar. It has companions, turn-based battles and a modern cinematic presentation, but adds timed parries, has no co-op and does not offer BG3’s open-ended party builds or quest design.
Will there be a Baldur’s Gate 4?
Larian has said it will not make Baldur’s Gate 4 or BG3 expansions. The studio’s announced next project is a new Divinity game, with Early Access reported as no earlier than 2028.
