Adam Patterson and Declan Lawn directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Bronner. How closely does the film follow the real case?
Rogue Agent is inspired by the story of Robert Hendy-Freegard, the real British conman who claimed to be connected to MI5 or another secret service. He warned victims that terrorists were pursuing them and used that story to obtain money and control their behavior.
Contemporary reporting on his 2005 conviction described a scheme lasting roughly a decade and involving deception, theft, coercive control, and the extraction of substantial sums from victims. The Law Commission later discussed the Hendy-Freegard litigation when explaining the legal difference between movement caused by deception and the deprivation of liberty required to establish kidnapping.
