A robo-advisor is a digital investment-advice service; an AI financial advisor is a broader label for technology used in financial advice or related tasks. The terms can overlap, but neither “AI” nor “robo” alone tells you what a service actually does, whether it manages investments, or whether you can speak with a human professional. Compare the provider’s services, costs, disclosures, and registration—not just its label.
What is a robo-advisor?
A robo-advisor is an online investment-advisory program that typically asks about information such as your goals, time horizon, assets, and risk tolerance, then uses those inputs to recommend or manage an investment portfolio. The SEC describes robo-advisers as registered investment advisers that use computer algorithms to provide online advisory services, often with limited human interaction. Actual features and investment approaches vary by provider. SEC: Investor Bulletin: Robo-Advisers
What does “AI financial advisor” mean?
“AI financial advisor” is a broad description, not a standardized service category. A product using AI might answer financial questions or help explain documents; that label does not establish that it offers personalized investment recommendations, constructs a portfolio, manages assets, or gives access to a human adviser. Determine the service scope from the provider’s written disclosures and agreement.
In February 2026, SEC Division of Investment Management Director Craig W. Daly discussed the possibility of an AI agent provided by a fund or adviser to answer investor questions using disclosure documents. He raised questions about marketing, registration, and supervision. His remarks were his perspective and did not necessarily reflect the views of the Commission, Commissioners, or other staff. They describe a possible use, not an adopted SEC policy or proof of a product’s performance. SEC: Remarks of Director Craig W. Daly, February 3, 2026

How the labels compare
| What to compare | Robo-advisor | AI financial advisor |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | A digital investment-advice service model. | A broad technology description; it does not identify a single service model. |
| Possible service | May gather investor information and recommend or manage a portfolio. | Could support tasks such as answering questions; portfolio advice or management is not implied by the label. |
| Human help | Varies: some services offer investment professionals, while others provide limited human interaction or technical support. | Not established by the label; check whether and how a qualified professional is available. |
| Registration | Some are registered investment advisers; verify the particular firm and its disclosures. | “AI” does not establish registration or regulatory status. |
These are category distinctions, not guarantees about every product. A robo-advisor may use AI techniques, and an AI-enabled service may include investment management, but neither conclusion follows from the name alone.
What to check before choosing a service
1. Scope and human support
Find out whether the service provides general education, recommendations, portfolio construction, ongoing management, or authority to trade. Ask whether investment professionals are available, through which channels, how often, and whether access depends on account size or service format. Do not assume technical support can answer investment questions.

2. Inputs, assumptions, and investment limits
Check which details the tool requests, how often you can update them, and what it leaves out. Automated advice may not account for your full circumstances, including other holdings, taxes, liquidity needs, experience, or a change in goals. Its assumptions may not fit your situation, and its recommendations may be limited to a narrow set of investments. SEC and FINRA: Investor Alert on Automated Investment Tools
3. Investment method, conflicts, and costs
Read the investment approach and ask whether recommendations are confined to affiliated products or involve other conflicts or compensation. Compare the full cost: advisory or subscription charges, underlying fund expenses, and any other account fees. Consider what services the fee includes and how it changes with the balance.

4. Disclosures, registration, and exit terms
Review the advisory agreement and Form ADV where applicable to understand the service, fees, conflicts, and risks. Check the firm’s registration and disciplinary history using official resources such as the SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure database when relevant. Before opening an account, understand how to end the relationship, withdraw cash, or transfer assets, including any liquidation consequences. U.S. regulatory context
In the United States, robo-advisers that are registered investment advisers are subject to the Advisers Act’s substantive and fiduciary obligations. That statement applies to registered advisers; it should not be extended to every chatbot, educational app, foreign service, or product marketed as AI. Verify the specific firm’s status and disclosures rather than inferring it from marketing. SEC: Investor Bulletin: Robo-Advisers SEC: Investment Advisers: Robo-Advisers

Warning signs to take seriously
- A tool asks for little information but presents its recommendation as fully tailored to your financial life.
- The provider does not clearly explain its assumptions, investment limits, fees, conflicts, or how to close or transfer an account.
- A pitch promises guaranteed investment returns or high returns with little or no risk. A joint SEC, NASAA, and FINRA alert warns investors about purported AI investment scams; an AI label does not validate performance claims. Verify the firm or person through appropriate official registration resources before investing. SEC and FINRA: Investor Alert on Automated Investment Tools
