Short answer: The Riemann Hypothesis (RH) concerns the nontrivial zeros of one function, the Riemann zeta function ζ(s). It says every such zero has real part 1/2. The Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH) makes the same critical-line claim for the nontrivial zeros of every Dirichlet L-function L(s,χ). GRH is therefore the broader family statement; in the Dirichlet-function formulation, it includes RH as the zeta-function case.
RH and GRH at a glance
| Question | Riemann Hypothesis (RH) | Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH) |
|---|---|---|
| Which functions are considered? | The single Riemann zeta function, ζ(s) |
Every Dirichlet L-function, L(s,χ) |
| Which zeros count? | The nontrivial zeros of ζ(s) |
The nontrivial zeros of each Dirichlet L-function |
| What location is required? | Real part Re(s)=1/2 |
Real part Re(s)=1/2 |
| Scope | One function | An infinite family of functions |
| Logical relationship | The narrower statement | Includes RH when the zeta function is treated as the relevant L-function |
| Current status | Unproved Millennium Prize Problem | Unproved conjecture in the Dirichlet-L-function formulation |
The word “generalized” refers to this particular extension from the zeta function to Dirichlet L-functions. It does not automatically mean every possible zeta- or L-function. For example, the corresponding statement for Dedekind zeta-functions is commonly called the Extended Riemann Hypothesis (ERH).
What the Riemann Hypothesis actually says
The function at the center
The Riemann zeta function is written ζ(s), where s is a complex number. Writing s=σ+it separates its real part, σ, from its imaginary part, t. A zero is a value of s for which ζ(s)=0.

RH does not say that every zero lies on one line. It classifies the zeros into two groups and makes a location claim only about the nontrivial group. The phrase “critical line” means the vertical line in the complex plane defined by Re(s)=1/2, or equivalently σ=1/2.

Trivial and nontrivial zeros
The zeta function has zeros at the negative even integers:
-2-4-6- and so on.
These are called the trivial zeros. They are not the zeros addressed by RH. The hypothesis concerns the remaining, nontrivial zeros. RH asserts that every one of those nontrivial zeros has real part exactly 1/2, even though their imaginary parts can vary.
This distinction prevents a common misunderstanding. Saying “all zeta zeros are on the critical line” is imprecise because the trivial zeros are known to lie at negative even integers, not at real part 1/2. The accurate statement is “all nontrivial zeta zeros lie on the critical line.”

Dirichlet L-functions
A Dirichlet L-function, written L(s,χ), is built from a Dirichlet character χ. Different characters produce different functions, so GRH is not a claim about one curve or one isolated formula. It is a simultaneous assertion about the zeros of the entire Dirichlet family.
For each Dirichlet L-function, GRH excludes its trivial zeros in the same way RH excludes the zeta function’s trivial zeros. It then requires every nontrivial zero of that particular L-function to satisfy Re(s)=1/2. Because the statement quantifies over every character and every associated function, it is strictly broader in scope than RH.

Why the zeta case is included
The zeta function is the base case in the Dirichlet-L-function framework. Consequently, if GRH is true, the zeta-function assertion follows: RH must be true as part of the larger claim. The converse does not follow. Proving that the zeros of ζ(s) lie on the critical line would settle RH but would leave the other Dirichlet L-functions unaddressed.
GRH is not every possible generalization
Mathematical literature uses several related names. In the terminology summarized by AIMath, RH for an individual L-function means that its nontrivial zeros lie on the critical line. GRH is the assertion for all Dirichlet L-functions. A parallel assertion for Dedekind zeta-functions is generally called ERH, the Extended Riemann Hypothesis. Therefore, a sentence claiming that “GRH covers all L-functions” overstates the standard Dirichlet formulation.

The critical line in plain language
The complex plane gives every zero two coordinates: a real coordinate and an imaginary coordinate. The condition Re(s)=1/2 fixes only the real coordinate. A nontrivial zero may occur high or low on the plane, depending on its imaginary part, but RH or GRH requires it to remain on the same vertical line.
This is a geometric condition, not a claim that the zeros are real numbers. A zero such as 1/2+it, with nonzero real t, is generally a genuinely complex point. The “line” language describes the shared real part, not the absence of an imaginary part.
Why zero locations matter for prime numbers
The zeta function encodes primes
The zeta function is linked to prime numbers through its Euler-product relationship. That connection means information about where zeta’s zeros occur translates into information about how primes are distributed. Prime-counting functions have a smooth average trend, but the actual count fluctuates around that trend. The location of the nontrivial zeros governs how large and structured those fluctuations can be.

Clay describes RH as controlling the deviation of the prime-counting function from its average behavior. RH would therefore provide a precise form of regularity for the distribution of primes, rather than merely confirming that primes become less frequent in a broad statistical sense.

What the generalized statement reaches
Dirichlet L-functions arise when arithmetic is separated into residue classes and other character-based patterns. Their zeros consequently control prime-distribution questions in arithmetic progressions and related settings. GRH extends the same kind of zero-location control from the ordinary prime sequence to this wider collection of arithmetic patterns.
The practical distinction is scope: RH governs the zeta function’s contribution to ordinary prime counting, while GRH supplies a corresponding hypothesis for every Dirichlet-character component used to study primes in different congruence classes.
Are RH and GRH solved?
No. RH remains an unsolved Millennium Prize Problem listed by the Clay Mathematics Institute. GRH, in the Dirichlet-L-function formulation described above, also remains an open conjecture.
“Open” means that no proof or counterexample is known that settles the statement for all relevant zeros. It does not mean that mathematicians know nothing about the zeros. Large theoretical results, partial theorems, and extensive computations provide substantial information without answering the universal claim.

What the verified zeros do—and do not—show
The Clay Mathematics Institute’s current problem page, accessed in 2026, reports that the first 10,000,000,000,000 solutions have been checked. Here, “solutions” refers to zeros tested in the numerical verification. This is a finite computational milestone, not a proof of RH.
A computation can test the zeros up to a specified range and would immediately disprove the hypothesis if it found a nontrivial zero off the critical line in that range. If every tested zero lies on the line, confidence increases, but the universal statement still includes all higher zeros that were not tested. No finite list, however large, replaces a proof covering infinitely many cases.
- What verification can establish: no counterexample was found among the zeros included in the calculation.
- What verification cannot establish: that every nontrivial zero, including all uncomputed zeros, lies on the line.
- What would settle RH: a rigorous proof or a rigorously established counterexample.
RH versus GRH by the questions readers usually ask
Is GRH just RH for Dirichlet L-functions?
That is a good shorthand, with one qualification: GRH is RH asserted simultaneously for all Dirichlet L-functions. RH alone concerns only ζ(s). The broader quantifier over the whole family is the substantive difference.
Does GRH include the Riemann Hypothesis?
Yes, in the standard Dirichlet formulation. The zeta function is the relevant base case, so GRH implies RH. RH does not imply GRH unless additional results establish the critical-line condition for every other Dirichlet L-function.
Do RH and GRH require the same critical line?
Yes. Both require the nontrivial zeros under consideration to have real part 1/2. They differ in which functions supply those zeros, not in the line itself.

Are trivial zeros part of either hypothesis?
No. Trivial zeros are excluded from the claim. For zeta, the familiar examples are the negative even integers -2, -4, -6, …. The hypotheses address the nontrivial zeros.
Does “generalized” include Dedekind zeta-functions?
Not by default. The GRH discussed here is the Dirichlet-L-function version. The analogous Dedekind-zeta statement is usually labeled ERH, so the name must be read in context.
How conditional results should be described
In number theory, a theorem may be proved under the assumption that RH or GRH is true. Such a result is a conditional theorem: its logical form is “if the hypothesis holds, then the stated conclusion follows.” It is not evidence that the hypothesis itself has been proved.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe distinction matters when reading claims about algorithms, prime gaps, explicit estimates, or arithmetic progressions. A result that cites GRH may rely on the stronger family-wide assumption even when its conclusion concerns a narrower problem. A result that cites RH uses only the zeta-function statement and does not automatically provide the corresponding guarantees for every Dirichlet L-function.
A precise way to state the difference
Use the following formulation when accuracy matters:
- RH says that every nontrivial zero of the Riemann zeta function
ζ(s)hasRe(s)=1/2. - GRH says that, for every Dirichlet character
χ, every nontrivial zero of the associated DirichletL-functionL(s,χ)hasRe(s)=1/2. - Because the zeta case is included in that family, GRH implies RH, but RH by itself is not enough to establish GRH.
- Neither statement has been proved, and the verified count of 10,000,000,000,000 zeta zeros is numerical evidence rather than a universal proof.
That wording preserves the essential distinctions: one function versus a family, nontrivial zeros versus trivial zeros, the shared critical line, logical inclusion, and the still-open status of both conjectures.
