PX4 is open-source flight-control software; Pixhawk is a hardware standard and ecosystem for autopilot boards; and the Dronecode Foundation provides PX4’s organizational home and vendor-neutral stewardship. They work together, but they are not interchangeable. You can explore PX4 in simulation before buying hardware, then check a specific board’s compatibility if you move toward a real vehicle.
What PX4 is—and what it is not
PX4 is an open-source flight-control stack for drones and other unmanned vehicles. It is software, not a complete drone or a particular flight-controller board. The project supports vehicle types including multirotors, fixed-wing aircraft, VTOL aircraft, helicopters and rovers. That distinction matters when choosing equipment: PX4 needs compatible hardware to control a physical vehicle, but you do not need to purchase a controller simply to begin exploring the software.
Who maintains PX4, and what Dronecode does
PX4 is hosted by the Dronecode Foundation, which PX4 describes as a Linux Foundation Collaborative Project. The project says Dronecode holds PX4 trademarks and serves as its legal guardian, providing vendor-neutral stewardship. Dronecode describes its role as supporting the sustainable growth of the ecosystem. These are organizational and stewardship functions—not evidence that the foundation manufactures every board or owns every product in the wider ecosystem. PX4 is community-developed. The project describes itself as not owned by a single company, so its organizational home should not be mistaken for one vendor controlling the entire product ecosystem or roadmap. Organizations can support the ecosystem through Dronecode membership, as described on the Dronecode membership page.
PX4 vs. Pixhawk: software and hardware
PX4 is the software that controls a vehicle. Pixhawk refers to a hardware standard and the ecosystem of autopilot boards built around it. PX4 can run on supported autopilot boards, and the Pixhawk ecosystem encompasses components such as sensors, telemetry radios and actuators. The PX4 repository describes the project’s hardware and ecosystem support.

“Pixhawk” on a product listing is not enough to establish that a particular board will work with every PX4 release. Compatibility depends on the exact board and software configuration. Before buying, consult PX4’s current supported flight-controller information and the documentation for the specific model. PX4’s guide also describes developer kits based on current Pixhawk-standard hardware, with stable PX4 pre-installed; check the current guide for applicable kit details and availability.
Three ways to get started
Explore in simulation
PX4 documentation describes running a simulation without physical hardware. This is a practical first step for learning the software and its workflows before committing to a vehicle build. Start with the simulation instructions in the PX4 User Guide.

Set up a development environment
If your goal is to work on PX4 itself, the guide covers building and developing from source. It also points to tools and integrations including QGroundControl, MAVSDK and ROS 2. Choose the guide for the version you intend to use rather than assuming instructions for the development branch apply to a stable release.
Move to a physical board or kit
A physical controller or developer kit is relevant when you need to configure or fly a real vehicle. Compare the exact board against PX4’s current supported-hardware information and that model’s documentation; a general claim of Pixhawk compatibility does not establish support for every board, feature or release.

How the open-source project can keep developing
PX4’s future is best understood through the structures that enable continued work, rather than through unsourced predictions about particular features or dates. The project combines community contributions, supported hardware, simulation and integrations with other tools. That gives developers routes to explore, test and improve the software across different unmanned vehicles without tying the project to one board manufacturer.
The PX4 repository identifies the source code as licensed under the BSD 3-Clause license and invites contributions including bug reports, documentation, features and code reviews. Read the license text for its terms; anyone distributing a product should assess their obligations for their particular use.
