Our verdict on TINU

TINU was an open-source macOS utility for creating bootable macOS installation media through a graphical interface. It was designed for Mac users who wanted to prepare an installer without command-line tools, while also handling EFI-related tasks. The utility supported Apple’s createinstallmedia method, could format drives or partitions, and worked with macOS installer applications downloaded from Apple or found on the local disk. It targeted Macs running OS X Yosemite or later.

Its strongest differentiator was the combination of installer creation and EFI customization. TINU could mount EFI partitions and install Clover or OpenCore EFI folders, making it more focused than a basic bootable-media writer. The interface supported English and Italian, and its integrations were limited to Apple macOS installer applications and Apple’s createinstallmedia executable. This narrow ecosystem fit made it relevant for macOS installation workflows, but it was not intended as a general-purpose USB utility.

The main consideration is project status. The repository was archived by its owner on February 1, 2025, and is read-only; the latest listed release is 3.0.1, released October 31, with testing noted for macOS 13 Ventura. TINU should therefore be considered a discontinued specialist tool rather than an actively developed utility. Choose it for its open-source macOS and EFI workflow when its release compatibility fits your environment. Choose another product if you need Windows or Linux support, multiboot media, persistent storage, or an actively maintained project.
