Where it wins
- Build and send custom packets with Python or the interactive shell.
- Decode protocols and import or export PCAP files.
- Analyze flows and support remote capture through Wireshark extcap.
Where it doesn't
- Its workflow centers on Python and an interactive shell.
- TLS decryption requires available session secrets.
- It is a toolkit, not a hosted SaaS service.
Our verdict on Scapy
Scapy is an open-source Python program and library for sending, sniffing, dissecting, forging, and analyzing network packets. It is aimed at users who need programmable control over packet construction and inspection rather than a fixed graphical workflow. The toolkit supports protocol decoding, packet capture, request-response matching, network probing, PCAP handling, conversation visualization, and TLS processing. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, and BSD systems through an interactive shell or Python code.
Its strongest differentiator is the combination of packet crafting and analysis in one programmable environment. Users can construct custom packets, send and sniff traffic, decode protocols, and match requests with responses. PCAP import and export supports file-based analysis, while conversation and flow visualization adds a higher-level view of traffic. Remote capture through Wireshark extcap interfaces also gives Scapy a place within workflows that include Wireshark. This makes it a strong fit for protocol research, network probing, packet-level troubleshooting, and automation-oriented analysis.
Scapy is free, open-source, and GPL-licensed, with no conventional hosted SaaS model. TLS record parsing and encryption or decryption are available when session secrets are available, so that capability depends on the supplied traffic context. The main trade-off is its Python-centered workflow: teams seeking programmable packet work will find that focus useful, while buyers wanting a turnkey, hosted monitoring product or a purely visual analyzer should choose an alternative. Pick Scapy for flexible packet manipulation across Windows, macOS, and Linux; avoid it when managed deployment is the primary requirement.
