  • Where it wins

    • Captures Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, RF, and supported sensor traffic
    • Supports remote sensors, PCAP workflows, APIs, and command-line tools
    • Combines device tracking, WIDS alerts, logging, and trend monitoring
  • Where it doesn't

    • Windows support runs through WSL rather than a native capture stack
    • Its breadth may exceed the needs of teams focused on one protocol
    • Known-key decryption support depends on having the relevant key

Our verdict on Kismet

Kismet is a free, open-source wireless monitoring and packet-capture tool for teams investigating Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Bluetooth Low Energy, Zigbee, RF devices, and other supported protocols. It supports local interfaces and remote sensors, with headless operation for server or sensor deployments and an integrated web-based interface for monitoring. Network analysts, security teams, researchers, and operators managing distributed wireless visibility can use it for packet capture, device tracking, activity monitoring, and wireless intrusion-detection alerts.

The platform covers the workflow from capture through storage and analysis. Kismet can replay, export, and stream PCAP and PCAP-NG data, while unified SQLite-based kismetdb logging stores packets, devices, location, and trends. Its REST API, WebSocket endpoints, and Python modules support scripting and integration, and command-line tools cover capture, configuration, logging, and replay. Remote capture operates over WebSockets or TCP, which fits installations that separate sensors from the monitoring server. Kismet runs on Linux and macOS, with Windows support through WSL.

Its strongest fit is for wireless-focused work that benefits from multiple capture sources, distributed sensors, and protocol-aware monitoring in one open-source tool. The feature set reaches beyond basic sniffing into relationships between devices, filtering, tracking, trend-based monitoring, and WIDS alerts. Known-key decryption is documented for traffic such as WEP when the key is available. Teams needing a native Windows capture stack should look elsewhere, as should buyers seeking a narrow, ready-made analyzer for a single protocol rather than a configurable wireless monitoring system.
