Our verdict on RMUX

RMUX is an open-source terminal multiplexer written in Rust for developers and automation-focused teams. Its tmux-compatible CLI supports sessions, windows, panes, configurable layouts, and detach-and-reattach behavior across Linux, macOS, and Windows. It also offers a local CLI, API access, browser-based Web Share, and SDKs for Rust, Python, and TypeScript, making it a fit for workflows that combine interactive terminal work with programmatic control.

Automation is RMUX's standout capability. Its terminal automation features include snapshots, text waits, keyboard input, and pane events, while the SDKs provide language-specific ways to control sessions. The tmux-compatible CLI, with more than 90 commands, gives existing terminal-multiplexer workflows a familiar control surface. Ratatui is also listed among its integrations. Teams choosing RMUX should value programmable terminal operations and configurable layouts more than a plugin ecosystem, since plugins and extensions are not supported.

Collaboration is handled through the optional Web Share feature, which provides encrypted browser access to locally running panes or sessions. Operator and spectator roles, along with PIN pairing, distinguish interactive control from observation. RMUX's daemon provides local persistence, but it does not offer cross-device session synchronization. That makes it a focused choice for automation-heavy teams managing local or host-bound terminal environments. Teams needing local session recovery, native Windows support, and SDK-driven control should consider it; teams centered on synchronized sessions across devices or extensibility through plugins should choose an alternative.
