Our verdict on Rackspace Cloud Files

Rackspace Cloud Files is an object storage service for files, media, backups, archives, static web content, and application data. It is aimed at developers, IT teams, and businesses that need programmatic or web-based storage rather than a conventional consumer file-sync workspace. Objects are organized into containers, with access available through a REST API, the browser-based Cloud Control Panel, and supported Linux environments.

The published Cloud Files plan uses usage-based monthly billing at $0.1563 per GB. The Cloud Files storage plan charges for stored capacity, so the pricing model fits workloads that grow or change over time. Optional outbound bandwidth charges apply, which makes data-transfer patterns important when estimating overall costs. The service also supports dynamically expanding storage, while three-copy data replication provides built-in redundancy for stored objects. There is one listed storage plan rather than a set of feature-tiered subscriptions, so paid functionality is centered on capacity and usage.

Cloud Files is strongest when storage needs connect to applications, infrastructure, or web delivery. REST API access supports programmatic workflows, Akamai CDN delivery can distribute content, and static website hosting extends the service beyond basic object retention. Cloudfuse mounting support is available for CentOS and Ubuntu, although it does not turn the service into a broad file-system platform. The limited emphasis on collaboration, sharing, and end-user file management makes it less suitable for teams seeking a general-purpose cloud drive. Choose Cloud Files for API-driven storage, archives, backups, or static content; choose another category option when everyday document collaboration and polished file sharing are central requirements.
