Our verdict on Powabase
Powabase is a backend-as-a-service platform for developers, engineering teams, and businesses building AI-native applications. Its core stack combines isolated Postgres databases with pgvector, email/password and OAuth authentication, object storage with signed URLs, realtime subscriptions, REST access, and direct Postgres access. AI application features include document ingestion, OCR, indexing, retrieval-augmented generation, LLM agents with tool execution and streaming, multi-agent orchestration, and DAG-based workflow automation. Projects can run on Powabase Cloud or be self-hosted with the Apache-2.0 stack.
Pricing is structured around self-hosting and managed cloud usage. The Self-hosted plan is free forever and includes the full Postgres, auth, storage, REST, and AI service, with Docker Compose deployment and community support on Discord. The Free cloud plan is also free forever and includes all platform features, Postgres with pgvector, Auth, Storage, Realtime, RAG, agents, and workflows; it includes usage credits and is pay-as-you-go, while inactive projects are suspended and later deleted. Self Serve starts at $25 per month with $25 in monthly credits, any compute tier from Sandbox to Foundry, lower usage rates than Free, and email support. Scale costs $300 per month and adds $300 in credits, higher-throughput production workloads, lower listed overage rates, and priority live support.
The platform fits teams that want an AI-focused backend with a relational database and deployment control. Docker Compose and Kubernetes self-hosting support provide options beyond Powabase Cloud, while integrations with Claude Code, Codex, Replit, Lovable, v0, Base44, Bolt.new, Antigravity, and OpenCode connect it to coding and app-building tools. Enterprise adds managed cloud or private VPC/on-premises hosting, regional data residency, air-gapped support, SSO, audit logs, RBAC, and priority support with SLAs. Powabase is a strong fit for AI-native projects that value self-hosting; teams seeking a simpler conventional backend may prefer a narrower service.
