Our verdict on Convex

Convex is a backend platform for dynamic applications, with a reactive document-relational database, TypeScript queries and mutations, realtime client subscriptions, serverless actions, scheduled functions, file storage, search, authentication integrations, and HTTP APIs. It is aimed at developers building web and API applications, particularly teams that want TypeScript-defined backend logic and realtime data behavior. Convex offers hosted cloud plans for prototypes, startups, and larger teams, alongside a self-hosted open-source backend for organizations running it on their own infrastructure.

The plan structure spans free development through enterprise deployment. The Free plan includes a reactive database, file storage, text and vector search, authentication, Node.js actions, and preview deployments. Starter keeps the core capabilities and uses pay-as-you-go pricing beyond free-tier limits. Professional costs $25 USD per developer per month and adds log streaming, exception reporting, HIPAA/SOC 2 reports, daily backups, custom domains, and email support. Business & Enterprise starts at a $2,500 USD monthly minimum and adds SAML/SSO, service SLAs, high-scale dedicated deployments, custom MSAs, and volume pricing.

Convex’s main appeal is the breadth of backend building blocks organized around reactive application development. Authentication integrations include Clerk, WorkOS AuthKit, Auth0, and custom OpenID Connect providers, while integrations also include Stripe, Resend, Twilio, PostHog, Datadog, Axiom, and Airbyte. Teams can also create custom HTTP APIs and webhook endpoints, and use text and vector search alongside file serving. Choose Convex when TypeScript, realtime synchronization, and an integrated backend matter most. Consider another option if a fixed-cost entry plan or a lower enterprise minimum is more important than this feature set.
