Our verdict on PagerDuty
PagerDuty is a SaaS incident management platform for developers, DevOps, ITOps, reliability engineers, security teams, customer success teams, and business stakeholders. It brings together on-call scheduling, escalation policies, incident workflows, stakeholder communications, status pages, mobile response, APIs, integrations, automation, and AI capabilities. That scope makes it a fit for organizations coordinating operational response across multiple teams, rather than teams looking only for a basic rota or notification tool.
The published plans span a free tier and three paid tiers. Free costs $0 per month and supports up to 5 users, 1 on-call schedule, 1 escalation policy, 750+ out-of-the-box integrations, and 100 international phone/SMS notifications per month. Professional starts at $21 per user per month when billed annually and adds Basic Chat Experience, more schedules and escalation policies, an external status page for up to 250 subscribers, and Post-Incident Reviews. Business starts at $41 per user per month when billed annually and adds custom fields, advanced incident workflows, internal status pages, and an external status page for up to 500 subscribers. Enterprise has custom pricing, advanced incident workflows, incident tasks, and premium status pages. A 14-day free trial is also available.
PagerDuty’s main distinction is breadth across the incident lifecycle. Slack supports incident creation, acknowledgement, escalation, and resolution, while Microsoft Teams supports notifications and actions. The platform also lists Jira Cloud, Jira Software, Jira Service Management, Zendesk, ServiceNow, Zoom, Google Meet, and Amazon CloudWatch among its integrations. Public, private, and audience-specific status pages support different communication needs, and Post-Incident Reviews extend the workflow beyond immediate response. Choose PagerDuty when scheduling is part of a wider incident operation; teams needing only a small, simple on-call setup may find the free plan’s limits or paid annual pricing less suitable.
