Our verdict on One Identity Active Roles

One Identity Active Roles is an administration and governance product for organizations managing hybrid Microsoft identity environments. It brings on-premises Active Directory, Entra ID, and Microsoft 365 administration into a single interface, with web and Windows access plus an API. The product is aimed at enterprises that need delegated administration, policy enforcement, lifecycle management, synchronization, reporting, and auditability across multiple domains and tenants.

Its strongest area is administrative control. Role-based delegated administration provides granular permissions, while workflow and policy automation support user and group lifecycle processes, including deprovisioning. Dynamic and attribute-based group management adds control for changing organizational requirements. Synchronization across directories and Microsoft environments helps coordinate identity data, and built-in auditing, reporting, change history, and activity tracking provide visibility into administrative actions. Integrations with Microsoft Azure, Defender, and other One Identity products extend its fit within a broader Microsoft-focused identity and security environment.

The pricing model is contact sales, and no free plan is available. Active Roles also does not provide end-user password self-service as part of the product; administrator-operated password resets are documented, while self-service is presented through the separate Password Manager product. Organizations seeking granular delegated administration, hybrid directory governance, and detailed oversight should consider Active Roles. It is less suitable for teams looking for a free entry point, built-in password self-service, or a tool focused outside Microsoft identity environments.
