Our verdict on FreeDNS

FreeDNS combines dynamic DNS, static DNS, subdomain hosting, custom-domain DNS, URL forwarding, backup DNS, and IPv6 support. It is aimed at home networks, personal projects, and small organizations that need stable hostnames while IP addresses change. Updates can run through automated update URLs, direct URLs, scripts, or compatible router software, with web and API access available.

The free tier provides a practical entry point for shared FreeDNS subdomains and dynamic IP updates. Paid plans start with Starter at $5 per month or $60 per year, including Basic status, a five-hostname subdomain cap, one-hour global propagation, and no wildcard support. Premium plans add wildcard support, Premium status, and 60-second global propagation: Premium (50 hostnames) costs $10 per month or $120 per year, while Premium (100 hostnames) costs $25 per month or $300 per year. Premium (250 hostnames) adds 15 stealth flags and professional nameserver branding; Premium (500 hostnames) includes 30 stealth flags and professional nameserver branding.

FreeDNS fits buyers who want DDNS alongside broader DNS capabilities rather than a narrowly focused IP-update service. It supports A, AAAA, MX, NS, TXT, LOC, RP, HINFO, SRV, and CAA records, plus IPv6 forward and reverse DNS. Router integrations include DD-WRT, OpenWrt, Tomato, Fritz!Box, MikroTik, pfSense, and ddclient. The main trade-offs are the Starter limits, slower propagation on that tier, and the lack of wildcard support outside eligible Premium plans. Buyers needing straightforward IPv6 automation should account for the possibility of script-based setup, while those needing only basic DDNS may find the broader DNS feature set unnecessary.
