For most beginners, No-IP is the safest starting point; DuckDNS is simpler, Dynu is more feature-rich, and Cloudflare is better if you already own a domain. The important distinction is whether you want a free provider subdomain or free DNS management for your own domain. This guide compares nine current options and explains the networking and security requirements DDNS cannot solve.

The best free dynamic DNS service depends on what you actually need. If you want a ready-made hostname without buying a domain, start with No-IP, DuckDNS, or Dynu. If you already own a domain and want to use a branded hostname, Cloudflare is usually the more flexible choice, provided you configure an updater through its API. For open-source compatibility, consider nsupdate.info; for homelab-oriented wildcard subdomains, look at DyDNS.

Dynamic DNS, commonly abbreviated DDNS, keeps a hostname pointed at your changing public IP address. That means you can connect to a home VPN, NAS, camera system, game server, web server, or other self-hosted service by name instead of checking your ISP-assigned IP address every time it changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This comparison covers nine free services, but they are not all the same type of product. Some provide a free hostname under the provider’s domain. Others provide free DNS management for a domain you already own. DNS-O-Matic is included later as a useful update relay, but it is not counted among the nine because it does not provide a hostname or DNS hosting itself.

Quick comparison of the free DDNS providers

Service Best for What you get Main limitation
No-IP Beginners A conventional provider-managed hostname and updater ecosystem One free hostname plus account-maintenance and record restrictions
DuckDNS Simple homelabs A free subdomain under duckdns.org Less flexible than using a domain you own
Dynu Multiple hostnames and broader DNS needs Free DDNS, updater software, router support, and multiple record types Advanced features may have separate limits or conditions
FreeDNS by afraid.org Experienced users Shared subdomains, custom-domain support, and automated updates Its flexible interface and shared-domain model can be less approachable
Cloudflare Domain owners Free authoritative DNS and API-based automation You must own a domain and provide the updater
DNSExit Domain-based DDNS DDNS for a domain you control, with router, script, and API options Other DNS, registration, forwarding, or support products may differ by plan
ChangeIP Provider-supplied subdomains Free domains or subdomains paired with dynamic DNS Custom-domain DNS and premium features are not necessarily free
nsupdate.info Open-source users Free DDNS with DynDNS2 protocol compatibility Confirm current support and operational suitability for important services
DyDNS Self-hosters and homelabs Public subdomains, wildcard DNS, native updater tools, and short TTLs Newer and less broadly established in consumer-router ecosystems

1. No-IP: the easiest mainstream starting point

No-IP is a practical first choice if you want a familiar provider-managed hostname and do not want to purchase a domain. Its free plan advertises one hostname, dynamic DNS updates, URL redirection, port-80 redirection, and signup without a credit card.

The service is particularly suitable for a home VPN, remote-access endpoint, small web server, or other project where one conventional hostname is enough. It also has a documented updater ecosystem, including software and support for compatible routers and network devices.

Best for: beginners who want a conventional hostname and straightforward setup options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch-outs: the free plan is limited to one hostname and has restrictions affecting some fourth-level subdomains and TXT records. No-IP’s free-account renewal, confirmation, and account-maintenance requirements can change, so check the current terms before relying on the hostname for a long-lived service.

2. DuckDNS: a simple free subdomain

DuckDNS takes a deliberately narrow approach. It provides free subdomains under duckdns.org, which you can point to the public IP address you want to reach. That simplicity makes it popular for small homelabs, home-automation systems, and one-off remote-access endpoints.

DuckDNS is a good fit when you need one or a few simple names and do not need to manage a complete DNS zone. You will generally configure an update token in a router, server, home-automation platform, scheduled task, or small script.

Best for: a small homelab or single endpoint where a provider subdomain is sufficient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch-outs: a name under duckdns.org is not the same as DNS hosting for a domain you own. Do not choose it if you need a branded domain, extensive DNS administration, or a provider-specific feature that has not been documented for the current service.

3. Dynu: a feature-rich free DDNS option

Dynu is one of the stronger all-purpose choices in this list. Its official service information describes free dynamic DNS, a free update client, router support, multiple DNS record types, and free third-level domains. Its FAQ states that users can have up to four free hostnames and can use either a Dynu-provided hostname or subdomains of a domain they control.

That combination is useful for a homelab with separate names for a VPN, NAS, monitoring dashboard, and web application. It also gives more room to grow than a service limited to one basic A-record hostname.

Best for: users who want several free hostnames, router support, or broader DNS controls.

  • Support POE POE+:Cat 6 ethernet cables are made of pure copper conductors. Cat 6 cable supports IEEE802.3at and IEEE802.3af protocol poe power supply.

Watch-outs: the hostname still needs to be updated by a compatible router, client, script, or custom mechanism. “Free” does not mean every advanced DNS or account feature is unlimited, so verify the current allowance for the records and update methods you plan to use.

4. FreeDNS by afraid.org: flexible shared and custom domains

FreeDNS by afraid.org offers free DNS and dynamic DNS hosting, shared subdomains, custom-domain support, and automated update interfaces. It is a good match for technically comfortable users who value flexibility and want more DNS choices than a minimal provider-managed hostname service normally offers.

The shared-domain model is worth understanding before you sign up. Depending on the available choices, you may select a subdomain from a public shared domain or configure a domain you control. Those options have different branding, ownership, and long-term control implications.

Best for: experienced users who want flexible DNS records, update interfaces, or shared-domain choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch-outs: the interface and policies may require more DNS knowledge than DuckDNS or a basic No-IP setup. Check the current shared-domain availability, account rules, and custom-domain controls rather than assuming every feature has the same terms.

5. Cloudflare: best when you already own a domain

Cloudflare is frequently mentioned in DDNS discussions, but it belongs in a different category from DuckDNS or No-IP. Cloudflare primarily provides free authoritative DNS for a domain that you control; it does not normally give you a free hostname under a Cloudflare-owned public suffix.

For example, if you own example.com, you could create vpn.example.com or home.example.com and update its DNS record whenever your home IP changes. Cloudflare provides the DNS management and API, but you still need an automation layer such as a router integration, ddclient, a scheduled script, or another DDNS client.

Best for: domain owners who want a branded hostname, API automation, and control over their DNS zone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch-outs: you need to own the domain and complete the required nameserver setup. Cloudflare will not automatically discover a changing home IP merely because the domain is hosted there. Protect API credentials carefully and give an updater only the minimum DNS permissions it needs.

6. DNSExit: free DDNS for a domain you control

DNSExit describes a free dynamic DNS plan that can use your own domain. It supports updates from routers or scripts and exposes an API. The service states that its dynamic-IP DNS offering is free regardless of where the domain was registered.

This is useful if you want to keep your domain registration with your existing registrar while using a separate service for DNS and dynamic updates. It is more appropriate for domain owners than for someone who simply wants a free provider subdomain.

Best for: domain owners seeking a straightforward DDNS update endpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch-outs: distinguish the free DNS/DDNS functionality from paid domain registration, forwarding, email, support, or other products. Confirm the required delegation, record type, and update method before changing a production domain.

7. ChangeIP: free subdomain and DDNS pairing

ChangeIP combines free DNS hosting with its free dynamic DNS service and documents a selection of provider-supplied domains. It can appeal to users who want a free subdomain and an integrated update path rather than configuring a separate domain registrar and DNS provider.

Its plan distinctions are important. Free hosting applies to provider-supplied domains, while DNS hosting for externally registered domains and some advanced DDNS features may be paid. Treat it as a domain-model alternative, not as proof that every custom-domain option is free.

Best for: readers seeking a provider-supplied free subdomain paired with DDNS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch-outs: check whether the hostname, DNS hosting, and update features you want are covered by the current free tier. Do not assume that a free ChangeIP subdomain gives you the same control as a domain you own.

8. nsupdate.info: open-source and DynDNS2-compatible

nsupdate.info describes itself as a free, open-source dynamic DNS service. Its frontend accepts updates through the DynDNS2 protocol, which is supported by many routers and DDNS client programs.

Protocol compatibility is its main practical attraction. If your router, firewall, or client already supports DynDNS2, you may be able to configure the service without adopting a proprietary updater. It is also worth considering if transparency and open-source software matter to you.

Best for: open-source enthusiasts and users comfortable configuring a router or standard DDNS client.

Watch-outs: verify the current hostname-registration process, support expectations, and operational maturity before making it the address for a business-critical service. Compatibility with the DynDNS2 protocol does not guarantee that every router’s implementation will work without adjustments.

9. DyDNS: a newer homelab-focused option

DyDNS is aimed at homelabbers and self-hosters. Its current service information advertises a public subdomain, wildcard DNS, a lightweight native updater, systemd and launchd integration, a 60-second TTL, and IP-change alerts.

Wildcard DNS can be convenient for a homelab. Instead of creating and updating a separate record for every internal service, you can use names below one namespace and route them through your reverse proxy or gateway. That does not remove the need to configure the proxy, TLS certificates, authentication, and firewall correctly.

Best for: self-hosters who want wildcard subdomains and native updater tooling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch-outs: DyDNS is newer and less established in general consumer-router ecosystems than No-IP or Dynu. Check whether your operating system, router, or reverse-proxy setup supports its updater before committing to it. Do not infer uptime, maturity, or broad router support without current documentation or independent testing.

Which free DDNS provider should you choose?

  • Choose No-IP if you are a beginner and want the most conventional provider-managed hostname, assuming its free-plan limitations are acceptable.
  • Choose DuckDNS for a small homelab, home-automation project, or one-off endpoint where a simple provider subdomain is enough.
  • Choose Dynu if you need multiple free hostnames, router support, or broader record support.
  • Choose FreeDNS if flexible shared-domain and DNS options matter more than a polished beginner workflow.
  • Choose Cloudflare if you already own a domain and are comfortable configuring an API updater.
  • Choose DNSExit if you want domain-oriented DDNS and a router, script, or API update path.
  • Choose ChangeIP if a provider-supplied free subdomain and integrated DDNS service meet your needs.
  • Choose nsupdate.info if open-source software and DynDNS2 compatibility are priorities.
  • Choose DyDNS if you want a homelab-oriented namespace with wildcard support and a native updater.

What DDNS does—and what it does not do

DDNS solves a naming problem: it keeps a DNS record synchronized with a changing public IP. It does not solve every problem involved in reaching a home network from the Internet.

DDNS does not bypass CGNAT

Your router must have a usable public WAN address, or another reachable public endpoint must forward traffic to you. If your ISP places your connection behind carrier-grade NAT, the address shown by your router may be private or shared. In that situation, a DDNS record can update successfully but still point to an address that cannot accept inbound connections.

Check the WAN address shown by the router against the public address reported by an independent IP-checking service. If they differ substantially, ask your ISP about a public IPv4 address, use IPv6 if your entire path supports it, or use an outbound-overlay solution such as a hosted VPN or relay. DDNS alone will not make inbound port forwarding work through CGNAT.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DDNS does not open firewall ports

You still need a deliberate network design: port forwarding where appropriate, firewall rules limited to the required ports, and a service listening on the expected internal address. Opening a port without understanding the application behind it can expose more than intended.

DDNS does not make an exposed service secure

A hostname is only a reachability layer. Keep the router, server, NAS, applications, and updater software current. Prefer a VPN for administrative and file access, use strong unique credentials and multifactor authentication where available, and avoid publishing router or NAS administration interfaces directly to the Internet.

Router, server, or script: where should the updater run?

The updater must run somewhere that remains online and can detect the current public IP. Common choices are:

  • Router: convenient and power-efficient because it is already online. Support varies by model, firmware, provider, and IP version.
  • NAS or home server: useful when the server is always running and its operating system or application includes a DDNS client.
  • Desktop or small computer: flexible, but the device must stay powered on and connected.
  • Scheduled script or DDNS client: useful for Cloudflare and other services that expose an API or standard update protocol.

A router with DDNS support can eliminate the need for a separate always-on updater computer, but it is not a requirement. Before buying hardware, confirm the exact model and firmware, supported providers, IPv4 and IPv6 behavior, update frequency, and whether the router accepts a custom update URL. ASUS and TP-Link documentation illustrates that DDNS clients are available on compatible models, not universally across every router.

How to set up a free DDNS hostname

  1. Confirm that you can receive inbound traffic. Check whether the router has a public WAN IP and whether your ISP blocks inbound connections or uses CGNAT.
  2. Choose the hostname model. Select a provider subdomain such as a DuckDNS or No-IP hostname, or use a subdomain of your own domain through Cloudflare, DNSExit, or another domain-oriented service.
  3. Create the account and hostname. Record the hostname, username, update token, API key, or password. Store credentials securely.
  4. Configure the updater. Use the router’s DDNS page, a NAS application, a provider client, a DynDNS2-compatible client, or a scheduled API script.
  5. Verify the DNS record. From an external network, check that the hostname resolves to the current public IP. Mobile data is useful because it avoids testing entirely from inside the home LAN.
  6. Configure access separately. Set up the required VPN, port forwarding, reverse proxy, firewall rule, TLS certificate, and authentication. Do not expose an administrative interface simply because the hostname works.
  7. Test after an IP change. If possible, force or wait for a WAN address change and verify that the updater detects it. Also check what happens if the router reboots or the updater loses connectivity.
  8. Review account and plan rules. Check renewal, confirmation, inactivity, hostname, record, and API limits. A free hostname that expires unexpectedly is not a dependable endpoint.

Using DDNS with a NAS or home media server

DDNS can make a NAS or home media server easier to find remotely, and NAS platforms such as Synology document DDNS as part of Internet-access setups. However, the hostname should not be treated as a security boundary.

For remote files or media, the safer design is usually to put access behind a VPN or a carefully configured reverse proxy, require strong authentication, apply updates promptly, and expose only the service that is genuinely needed. A NAS is optional: you can use any supported updater on a router or server, and you do not need a NAS to use any provider in this comparison.

DNS-O-Matic is an update relay, not a DDNS hostname provider

DNS-O-Matic is useful when one IP-address change needs to notify multiple DDNS or related services. Its own FAQ makes clear that it does not provide hostnames or DNS services. Use it as a distribution layer when you already have accounts with participating providers; do not select it as the destination hostname for your home network.

Do not confuse current services with the old free DynDNS hostname service

The old free DynDNS hostname service should not be treated as a current recommendation. Dyn’s official help information says that its free hostname service was discontinued in 2013. Current DDNS products using similar terminology are not evidence that the discontinued free offering is still available.

Final checklist before relying on free DDNS

  • Does the router have a genuinely reachable public IP address?
  • Is the selected provider supported by your router, NAS, client, or custom updater?
  • Does the service provide a hostname, or does it only manage DNS for a domain you own?
  • Are the hostname count, record types, API access, and update frequency sufficient?
  • Are renewal, confirmation, inactivity, and account-maintenance rules acceptable?
  • Have you configured the firewall, port forwarding, VPN, TLS, authentication, and software updates separately from DDNS?
  • Have you tested the hostname from outside your home network?
  • Have you checked the provider’s current free-plan documentation rather than relying on an old setup guide?

For most first-time users, No-IP is the conventional starting point, while DuckDNS is the simplest minimalist option. Dynu is more attractive when you need several hostnames. If you already own a domain, choose a domain-oriented service such as Cloudflare and automate updates properly. Whatever you choose, remember that DDNS keeps a name current; it does not provide public reachability through CGNAT or secure an exposed service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does dynamic DNS do?

DDNS keeps a hostname pointed at a changing public IP address. It does not bypass carrier-grade NAT, open firewall ports, configure port forwarding, or secure the service you expose.

What is the easiest free DDNS service?

No-IP is the most conventional beginner-oriented choice, provided its one-hostname limit and current free-plan account-maintenance rules work for you. DuckDNS is another simple option for a small homelab.

Is Cloudflare a free DDNS hostname provider?

Cloudflare is primarily free authoritative DNS for a domain you own. It does not normally provide a free hostname under a Cloudflare-owned suffix, and you must configure an updater through its API or another DDNS client.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does DDNS work through CGNAT?

Usually not. If your router’s WAN address is private or does not match your publicly visible address, your ISP may be using CGNAT. DDNS can update the record, but inbound traffic may still be unable to reach your network.

What is DNS-O-Matic used for?

DNS-O-Matic is an update relay that can notify multiple DDNS services when your IP changes. It does not provide hostnames or DNS hosting and is not a standalone DDNS provider.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose No-IP for a conventional beginner-friendly hostname, DuckDNS for a simple homelab subdomain, Dynu for multiple hostnames, or Cloudflare when you already own a domain. Verify public-IP availability and updater compatibility first, then secure remote access with a VPN, strong authentication, current software, and carefully limited firewall rules.
