Our verdict on Chainguard Registry
Chainguard Registry provides public and authenticated access to Chainguard’s hardened container images. Public Free Images are available without authentication, while organization registries provide authenticated access to production images. The service is aimed at development, platform, security, and compliance teams that need maintained images with vulnerability remediation and supply-chain metadata.
Its plan structure separates limited free access from broader commercial coverage. Free Images supports up to five images per organization and includes public images with latest tags for testing and production deployment. The Per Image plan is licensed by image number and type, with a contractual CVE SLA and supported upstream tags. Catalog provides full access to the Chainguard catalog, a contractual CVE SLA, and the ability to request new images or packages. These options make the product more suitable for teams choosing images around supply-chain requirements than for buyers seeking a general-purpose registry alone.
The registry’s standout area is image metadata and artifact workflow. Private registries support versioned and unique image tags, while signed metadata, SBOMs, provenance attestations, security advisory feeds, and vulnerability metadata support review and policy processes. Helm charts can be packaged as OCI artifacts, and Console or chainctl handles image and entitlement management. Integrations include Amazon ECR, Google Artifact Registry, JFrog Artifactory, Harbor, Snyk, Trivy, AWS Inspector, Wiz, GitLab, and others. Chainguard documents scanning as the deploying team’s responsibility, with scanner integrations and advisory feeds rather than hosted registry scanning. Choose it for signed, attested images and maintained supply-chain context; choose another registry if hosted image scanning is a core requirement.
