Portainer Server runs as a container on a machine you control. For a dependable installation, provide a current Docker host (or a documented Kubernetes or Podman environment), ARM64 or x86_64 architecture, persistent storage, and network access to TCP port 9443. Port 8000 is needed only for Edge compute features. Portainer’s official requirement pages do not publish a CPU or RAM minimum, so figures such as 1–2 vCPUs or 1–2 GB of RAM are planning estimates rather than guarantees.
What server does Portainer need?
Portainer is not a separate operating system or a dedicated hardware appliance. Portainer Server is deployed as a container on an existing host. That host supplies the operating system, container runtime, disks, network interface and security policy. Portainer then provides the management interface for your Docker, Kubernetes or Podman environments.
The authoritative checklist is in Portainer’s requirements and prerequisites documentation. In practical terms, your server must satisfy four conditions:
- A current, supported container platform. The normal installation path uses Docker, and the machine running Portainer needs sudo access.
- ARM64 or x86_64 architecture for Community Edition.
- A persistent volume for Portainer’s database and configuration.
- Firewall and routing rules that allow the ports required by your chosen features.
There is no official “Portainer server” CPU or RAM specification in the current, STS or 2.39 LTS requirement pages. Size the entire host for its operating system, Docker and the workloads it will run; Portainer itself is normally a small part of that budget.

Software and platform prerequisites
Docker is the usual requirement
For a Docker deployment, install a current Docker Engine before deploying Portainer Server. The documentation also calls for sudo on the machine that runs Portainer. A Docker host that is already at its storage or memory limit is a poor Portainer host, even if Portainer’s own process starts successfully.
The Community Edition compatibility table lists Docker Engine 28.5.1 and 29.7.1, Kubernetes 1.34 through 1.36, and Podman 5.8.5. Those entries describe versions shown as compatible in Portainer’s table; they are not a promise that every later or earlier release behaves identically. Check the table for the Portainer release you intend to deploy:

Community Edition is listed for both x86_64 and ARM64. This covers common Intel/AMD servers, many cloud instances, and ARM single-board or NAS systems. Confirm that the Docker installation on your chosen machine can run the Portainer image for its architecture before you commit to a very small or unusual device.

Linux and other operating systems
The official requirement pages document Docker on Linux as the setup path but do not provide an exhaustive supported-operating-system matrix. Third-party setup guides mention Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Red Hat Enterprise Linux-family distributions, openSUSE, Raspberry Pi OS, Windows with WSL2, Windows Server and macOS. Treat those as descriptions of possible Docker hosts, not as an official Portainer certification list; verify Docker support and networking on the operating system you select.
How much CPU, RAM and disk are required?
Portainer’s published requirements do not set a minimum CPU count, memory allocation or disk capacity. That absence is important: a number copied from a hosting guide should not be presented as an official Portainer floor.
| Figure | What it means | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 1 core, 1 GB RAM, 1 GB storage | A lower-bound estimate published by a 2026 third-party guide | Guide author’s estimate; not a Portainer requirement |
| 2 or more cores, 2 GB or more RAM, 10 GB or more storage | A more comfortable recommendation from that guide | Planning advice; not an official minimum |
| About 2 GB RAM and 2 vCPUs free | A separate 2026 guide’s suggested host headroom, with less said to work for testing | Unverified third-party estimate |
| Official CPU and RAM floor | No value is specified on the reviewed Portainer requirement pages | Not stated |
The estimates above come from one 2026 setup guide and another 2026 guide. They are useful for initial planning only. Your containers, Kubernetes components, monitoring, logs and databases can require far more memory and CPU than the Portainer interface.

A sensible way to size a host
- Reserve resources for the host operating system and Docker daemon first. Do not allocate every last unit of RAM to application containers.
- Add the normal load of the workloads you will manage. A host running several databases or build jobs needs a different budget from a host running a few idle services.
- Use the third-party 2-vCPU/2-GB/10-GB pattern as a conservative starting point for a small, lightly loaded installation only, not as a guarantee.
- Leave growth room for image layers, container logs, updates and backups. Disk exhaustion can stop both Portainer and the applications it manages.
- Monitor actual CPU, memory and disk pressure after deployment. Increase the host allocation when the workload, not Portainer’s label, becomes the bottleneck.
Storage: the requirement that is easiest to get wrong
Portainer Server needs a persistent volume for its database and configuration. If you recreate the container without reattaching that volume, the container may start but its Portainer state will not be retained. Persistence should therefore be designed before installation, not added after an incident.
Docker and Kubernetes use node-local storage by default. On a single host, that can be perfectly appropriate if the host and its disk are the intended failure domain. In a cluster, moving Portainer to another node without shared or replicated storage can make its database unavailable. Portainer’s documentation recommends implementing cluster-wide persistent storage at the infrastructure level when it is desired.
For performance-sensitive deployments, the documentation describes SSD-level performance as ideal: about 3.5 MB/s, 30,000 IOPS or higher, and write latency under 10 ms. These are performance guidance figures, not a capacity minimum or a guarantee that Portainer needs that throughput in every installation. Spinning disks may work for a small lab, while SSD-backed storage gives more predictable behaviour when the host is busy.

Single-node versus cluster storage
| Deployment shape | Storage decision | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| One Docker host | Attach a persistent local volume on a reliable disk and include it in backups | Host or disk failure removes both the service and its local data |
| Several Docker or Kubernetes nodes | Use storage supplied at the infrastructure level if Portainer must follow nodes | Node-local data is not automatically cluster-wide |
| Performance-sensitive environment | Prefer SSD-class media that meets the documented latency and I/O guidance | Slow or saturated storage makes management operations sluggish |
Portainer ports: 9443, 8000 and Edge Agent traffic
Port choices depend on which Portainer features you use. Do not open every port by habit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Port | Purpose | When it is required |
|---|---|---|
| TCP 9443 | Portainer web user interface | Default interface access; allow clients or a reverse proxy to reach it |
| TCP 8000 | Portainer tunnel server | Optional; required when you plan to use Edge compute features with Edge agents |
| TCP 9001 | Edge Agent endpoint | Must be reachable on the agent from the Portainer Server for an Edge Agent deployment |
| TCP 30778 | Kubernetes NodePort alternative for an Edge Agent | Use for Kubernetes Edge deployments that expose the agent through this NodePort |
Portainer’s wording is explicit: the UI is exposed on 9443 by default, while 8000 is optional and only needed for Edge compute features. The Edge Agent itself does not need an open port of its own in the same sense; instead, the Portainer Server must be able to reach the agent on 9001, or on 30778 when Kubernetes uses that NodePort. These details are documented in the main requirements page and the STS and 2.39 LTS pages.
Firewall planning
- Permit administrators, or your reverse proxy, to reach the Portainer host on 9443.
- If using Edge compute, permit the Portainer Server to reach the Edge Agent endpoint and permit the tunnel traffic required on 8000.
- For Kubernetes Edge agents, route traffic to the node and NodePort that expose 30778.
- Keep management ports off the public internet unless you have a deliberate, secured access design. A private network, VPN or tightly restricted firewall rule is safer than a globally open rule.
Docker security and host settings
SELinux
The Portainer requirement pages say SELinux should be disabled on the Docker host. If SELinux must remain enabled, deploy Portainer with Docker’s --privileged flag as directed by the documentation. Privileged mode broadens container permissions, so treat it as a security trade-off and limit host access accordingly.

- 【No Drill Mounted】Cable management tray can be assembled in as little as 3 minutes or less-simply. Side clips easily clampe the edge of desk, pass through the holes on the sides, and secure excess cables with baskets. Desk cable management supports inward or outward installation to meet your needs in different scenarios, and provides you with great convenience when collecting and organizing wires.
- 【Rubber Pad Protects Desk】Wire organizer under desk built-in soft rubber pads on the clamp protect your desk from scratches, so you will not damage your furniture or office.
- 【Sturdy and Beautiful】Cord management under desk is made of high-quality carbon steel and holds about 15 lbs. The wire basket has 2 holes on each side of the tray to enable your cables to pass freely. Cable baskets are suitable for desk thickness use from 0.4" to 2.4".
- 【Space Saving & Keep Organized】Desk cable management tray holds all your power cords, outlet strips, USB hubs and computer transformers hidden from your feet, and the data cables will not enter the vacuum cleaner to keep your desk clean and tidy. Desk wire organizer is also suitable for use in the kitchen and outdoors.
- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Root and rootless Docker
Docker should run as root for the documented Portainer setup. Rootless Docker can work, but Portainer’s pages note limitations and additional configuration. A rootless host therefore needs validation against the exact features and endpoints you plan to manage; do not assume it is equivalent to a standard rootful Docker installation.
Choosing the right server type
| Use case | Host characteristics to prioritize | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Personal lab or test machine | Supported Docker architecture, persistent local volume and enough spare resources after the OS | Portainer can be useful on modest hardware, but losing local storage still loses its configuration |
| Small production host | SSD-backed persistent disk, reliable backups, restricted 9443 access and resource headroom | Management availability and data retention matter more than chasing an unverified minimum |
| ARM server or NAS | ARM64 Docker support and a storage device that can sustain the workload | Community Edition lists ARM64, but architecture compatibility does not remove disk or runtime constraints |
| Docker or Kubernetes cluster | Infrastructure-level persistent storage, stable node networking and a clear Edge/agent port plan | Node-local defaults do not automatically follow a service between nodes |
| Edge deployment | Reachability for 8000, 9001 or 30778 as applicable, plus persistent Portainer storage | Edge features add network dependencies beyond the ordinary web interface |
The best server is therefore not the one with a particular advertised Portainer number. It is a supported Docker, Kubernetes or Podman host whose storage, network and security settings match the environment you intend to control.
Pre-install checklist
- Identify the Portainer release line: the current STS release or the Community 2.39.7 LTS entry shown in the compatibility table.
- Confirm that the host architecture is x86_64 or ARM64 and that the container runtime version appears in Portainer’s compatibility information.
- Verify that Docker is installed and running, and that you have sudo access on the host.
- Choose a persistent volume for Portainer’s database and configuration. Decide whether it is local by design or supplied by cluster infrastructure.
- Check disk performance and free space. For sensitive deployments, compare the storage with Portainer’s SSD-oriented latency and I/O guidance.
- Plan the firewall: 9443 for the interface, 8000 only for Edge compute, and 9001 or 30778 for the relevant Edge Agent path.
- Resolve SELinux and Docker privilege choices before deployment. Disable SELinux as documented, or use the documented privileged deployment if policy requires SELinux.
- Reserve CPU and RAM for the operating system, Docker and your workloads, then leave monitoring headroom rather than sizing to an unverified minimum.
- Document how the persistent volume will be backed up and restored. A backup of the container image alone is not a backup of Portainer’s database.
Common requirement failures and fixes
| Symptom | Likely requirement issue | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| The browser cannot open Portainer | TCP 9443 is blocked, routed to the wrong host, or not allowed through the reverse proxy | Verify the listener, firewall rule and route to the Portainer host on 9443 |
| Edge agents never connect | The optional tunnel or agent path is missing | For Edge, allow the Portainer Server’s 8000 path and reach the agent on 9001; use 30778 for the documented Kubernetes NodePort case |
| Settings disappear after recreation | The database/configuration volume was not persistent or was not reattached | Deploy with a durable volume and test restoration before relying on it |
| Permission or startup errors with SELinux | SELinux policy conflicts with the deployment | Follow Portainer’s documented choice: disable SELinux on the Docker host, or use the required privileged deployment when it must stay enabled |
| Rootless Docker behaves differently | Rootless limitations or missing extra configuration | Validate the required Portainer features on that runtime; use the documented rootful arrangement when compatibility is more important than rootless operation |
| MicroK8s addons silently fail | The node lacks enough CPU, RAM or disk for the addon | Check node resources before enabling addons, as described in the MicroK8s known-issues guidance |
Bottom line for a Portainer server
Start with a current, supported Docker host on x86_64 or ARM64, a persistent volume, and TCP 9443 reachable from your administration network. Use 8000 only when Edge compute requires it, and add the appropriate Edge Agent route on 9001 or Kubernetes NodePort 30778. Portainer publishes no CPU or RAM minimum in its requirement pages, so treat 1–2 vCPUs, 1–2 GB of RAM and 1–10 GB of disk as third-party planning estimates—not specifications. The host’s workload, storage durability and network design determine whether the installation is actually reliable.
