There is no single winner because these are different kinds of handhelds. PlayStation Portal is a streaming companion for a PS5, with a newer cloud-streaming option for PlayStation Plus Premium members. Steam Deck OLED is the best fit for local Steam gaming in a console-like interface, while ROG Ally X is the most flexible choice for Windows, Xbox Game Pass, Epic and GOG libraries. Choose Portal if you already own a PS5 and want DualSense controls away from the television. Choose Steam Deck OLED for local Steam installs, OLED picture quality and built-in trackpads. Choose ROG Ally X when launcher breadth and Windows compatibility matter more than a console-style setup.
The key buying question is whether your games run locally on the handheld or stream from another system. That distinction determines what you can play without a PS5, without reliable Wi-Fi and without managing Windows.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Portal Remote Player | PS5 owners who want remote play and DualSense-style controls | 8-inch full-HD display, up to 60fps; 5Mbps minimum Wi-Fi, 15Mbps recommended | PS5 remote play; selected PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming | Oct 2026 |
| Steam Deck OLED | Local Steam gaming with a console-like interface | 7.4-inch HDR OLED, up to 90Hz, 50Wh battery, 3–12 hours of content-dependent gameplay | SteamOS and locally installed PC games | Oct 2026 |
| ROG Ally X | Windows gaming across several PC storefronts | Ryzen Z1 Extreme, up to 24GB memory, up to 1TB storage, 80Wh battery, 7-inch 1080p 120Hz display | Windows 11; Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic and GOG | Oct 2026 |
Which handheld matches the games you already own?
Start with the source of your games, not the processor specification. Portal accesses compatible games installed on a paired PS5 through Remote Play and can now stream a selected cloud catalog with PlayStation Plus Premium. Steam Deck OLED installs supported games through SteamOS. ROG Ally X runs Windows 11, so it can combine Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic and GOG libraries on one device.
| If your priority is… | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 games away from the television | PlayStation Portal | It is built around PS5 Remote Play and retains DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers in supported games. |
| A simple, local Steam machine | Steam Deck OLED | SteamOS provides a console-like front end, while trackpads, gyro and rear grip buttons add PC control options. |
| Game Pass, Epic, GOG and Windows applications | ROG Ally X | Windows 11 and documented multi-store support avoid locking your library to one PC storefront. |
| Play without dependable streaming Wi-Fi | Steam Deck OLED or ROG Ally X | Both can run supported games installed locally; Portal’s core experience depends on a network path to a PS5 or cloud service. |
Portal is therefore not a slower or faster version of the PC handhelds. It is a different category: a screen and controller for streamed PlayStation games. Omdia’s 2025 market report reflects that distinction by counting streaming handhelds separately from Steam Deck and other PC gaming handhelds; it projects 29.3 million dedicated handheld hardware units in 2028.

What is PlayStation Portal and what does it require?
Sony describes PlayStation Portal Remote Player as a handheld gateway to PS5 games. A PS5 console, a PlayStation account and broadband Wi-Fi are required for Remote Play. Sony’s FAQ specifies at least 5Mbps broadband Wi-Fi, with 15Mbps recommended for a better experience.
Remote Play from your PS5
Portal can play compatible PS5 and PS4 games installed on the paired PS5. The game is rendered by the console and sent to Portal over the network, so the handheld does not install a PS5 game or replace the console. A PS5 must be available to provide that session, and the game still has to be compatible with Remote Play.
Cloud streaming with PlayStation Plus Premium
The newer cloud path lets PlayStation Plus Premium members stream selected PS5 games from the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, along with eligible digital PS5 games in their library. Sony says this can work when the PS5 is powered off or being used by another account. Selection and eligibility vary by time, region, country and subscription plan, so a Premium membership is not a guarantee that every PS5 title will stream.
Portal hardware and controls
Portal has an 8-inch full-HD display and can deliver up to 60 frames per second. Its controls are shaped like a DualSense controller, including haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in supported games. Those features make it the most direct way to preserve the feel of PlayStation controls while playing away from the TV.
Price and availability
Sony’s product page lists PlayStation Portal Remote Player from $249.00. Treat that as the listed price at the time of the page’s publication and recheck the current regional price and stock before buying; the amount can vary by market and retailer.
Can you play PS5 games offline on PlayStation Portal?
No—not for Portal’s normal use. Remote Play needs a network connection between Portal and the paired PS5, and cloud streaming needs an internet connection to Sony’s service. The device is not an offline console on which you install PS5 games.
A strong home network can make Remote Play practical in another room or nearby location, but a weak or congested connection can introduce image-quality drops, latency or disconnects. Sony’s 5Mbps minimum is a connection requirement, not a promise of a particular visual quality; its 15Mbps recommendation is the safer target for a better experience.

If you regularly travel where broadband Wi-Fi is unreliable, begin with Steam Deck OLED or ROG Ally X. They can still need connectivity for downloads, patches, multiplayer and account checks, but supported single-player games installed locally do not have to be continuously streamed from a PS5.
How do you set up PlayStation Portal Remote Play?
You need a PS5 signed in to your PlayStation account, compatible games installed on it, and a broadband Wi-Fi connection. The exact menu wording can change with system software, but the setup sequence is:
- On the PS5, sign in with the PlayStation account you intend to use on Portal.
- Open the PS5 settings for Remote Play and enable the feature.
- Enable the console’s rest-mode options that allow it to stay connected to the internet and be awakened for Remote Play.
- Connect Portal to a suitable Wi-Fi network and sign in with the same PlayStation account.
- Select the PS5 shown by Portal, then choose a compatible installed game from the PS5 interface.
- If the session is unstable, move closer to the router, use a less congested Wi-Fi band where available, pause other high-bandwidth traffic and verify that the connection meets Sony’s 5Mbps minimum; 15Mbps is recommended.
This process is for Remote Play. Cloud streaming is a separate Premium feature and depends on the selected catalog and your location.
What does Steam Deck OLED offer for local gaming?
Steam Deck OLED is Valve’s Steam-centered local-play option. Valve positions the Deck as a PC in a console-like package: SteamOS supplies the main interface, while desktop access and PC controls remain available when you need them.
Display and wireless specification
The OLED model has a 7.4-inch HDR OLED display with refresh rates up to 90Hz and Wi-Fi 6E. OLED contrast and HDR support can make dark scenes and bright highlights more distinct, while the higher refresh ceiling is useful when a game can produce frames quickly enough to benefit from it.
Battery, storage and expansion
Valve lists a 50Wh battery and estimates 3–12 hours of content-dependent gameplay. That is a wide range rather than a guaranteed runtime: demanding games, display brightness, frame-rate settings and wireless use all affect consumption. The OLED range includes 512GB and 1TB configurations. Steam Deck supports microSD expansion, and it can connect to displays and peripherals over USB-C.
Controls that distinguish it from the others
In addition to standard sticks, buttons and triggers, Deck OLED includes two trackpads, a gyroscope and rear grip buttons. Trackpads can substitute for a mouse in strategy or desktop-style software, gyro can add fine aiming, and rear buttons can keep a thumb on the stick while triggering secondary actions. These are hardware options rather than a claim that every game uses them equally well.

Where SteamOS helps—and where it does not
SteamOS is designed around selecting a game, changing supported settings and returning to play without managing a conventional Windows desktop. That simplicity is strongest when your library is primarily on Steam and the title is supported by SteamOS. Games that require another launcher, unusual anti-cheat behavior or unsupported Windows components can require additional setup, so “Steam Deck compatible” should be checked for each important title.

ROG Ally X is the Windows-oriented choice. ASUS lists Windows 11 Home, an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, up to 24GB of memory, up to 1TB of storage and an 80Wh battery. Its 7-inch display runs at 1920×1080 resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate, and the listed weight is 678g.
One device for several PC stores
ASUS documents compatibility with Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic and GOG, as well as cloud saves and online libraries. That breadth is useful when your purchases are spread across services or when you need native Windows applications that are not part of a SteamOS-first workflow.
Windows flexibility versus handheld simplicity
Windows gives Ally X a familiar PC foundation, but it also means dealing with desktop updates, launchers, account windows, notifications and settings designed for a mouse and keyboard. Armoury Crate and controller mappings can make handheld operation easier, yet the underlying operating system remains Windows. The documented platform support establishes flexibility; it does not establish a universal usability or frame-rate advantage over Steam Deck OLED.
Battery capacity is not runtime proof
The 80Wh figure is substantially a battery-capacity specification, not a guaranteed number of playing hours. Runtime depends on the game, power mode, brightness, refresh rate and background Windows activity. It should not be converted into a blanket claim that Ally X lasts longer than Deck OLED without like-for-like measurements.

Each device emphasizes a different type of interaction. Portal most closely reproduces a console controller, Deck OLED adds PC-oriented input hardware, and Ally X prioritizes a high-refresh Windows display.
| Feature | PlayStation Portal | Steam Deck OLED | ROG Ally X |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display | 8-inch full HD, up to 60fps | 7.4-inch HDR OLED, up to 90Hz | 7-inch 1920×1080, 120Hz |

| Primary game source | PS5 Remote Play or selected cloud streams | Locally installed Steam games | Locally installed Windows games and launchers |
| External expansion | Not established in the cited specifications | microSD expansion; USB-C display and peripheral support | microSD card reader; Windows peripheral support |
Choose Portal when adaptive triggers and haptics are central to how you want PlayStation games to feel. Choose Deck OLED when trackpads, gyro or rear buttons solve control problems in your games. Choose Ally X when a 120Hz 1080p panel and Windows software access are more important than SteamOS’s console-style flow.

Which device is best for local play and unreliable internet?
Steam Deck OLED and ROG Ally X are the safer starting points because supported games can be installed on their internal storage or expansion cards. Once installed, an offline single-player session may work without active streaming, although a title can still require an initial login, periodic verification, an update or an online connection for multiplayer.
Portal is dependent on connectivity by design. Remote Play needs the path between Portal and your PS5, and cloud streaming needs the path to Sony’s servers. A fast internet plan alone does not guarantee a stable session if the local Wi-Fi signal, router or upstream network is congested.

Is Steam Deck OLED or ROG Ally X easier to live with?
Steam Deck OLED generally demands less operating-system management when your library is centered on Steam and the game is supported by SteamOS. Its interface, suspend/resume behavior and controller-focused navigation are designed to feel closer to a console.
ROG Ally X trades that simplicity for broader compatibility. Windows lets you install and use several PC storefronts, game launchers and applications, but you may need to handle more desktop-style dialogs, updates and per-game configuration. Neither approach is universally better: the right choice depends on whether launcher freedom or a streamlined Steam workflow saves you more time.
How portable are the three options?
All three are handheld-sized devices, but the available specifications point to different priorities. Portal has the largest listed screen at 8 inches. Deck OLED combines a 50Wh battery with a 7.4-inch display and a stated 3–12-hour content-dependent range. Ally X lists the largest battery at 80Wh, a 7-inch 1080p screen and a 678g weight.
Battery capacity and screen refresh rate should be considered together with the games you play. A high-refresh display can draw more power, while a demanding 3D game can reduce runtime on any device. The cited specifications do not provide a like-for-like runtime comparison, so capacity alone cannot establish a winner.

You already own a PS5 and mainly want PS5 games away from the TV
Choose PlayStation Portal if your home or travel network meets Sony’s requirements and you accept streaming as the operating model. It gives the most direct access to the games and controller features you already use on PS5. Check compatibility title by title rather than assuming every PS5 or PS4 game is available.

You want a local handheld primarily for Steam
Choose Steam Deck OLED. Its combination of SteamOS, OLED display, suspend/resume, microSD expansion and extra controls is aimed at exactly that use case. It is the more natural fit when you want to download games and play without maintaining a PS5 connection.
Your games are split between Steam, Game Pass, Epic and GOG
Choose ROG Ally X. Windows 11 and ASUS’s documented storefront support reduce the need to choose one ecosystem. Expect more operating-system management than on a SteamOS-first device.
You travel with uncertain or expensive Wi-Fi
Start with Steam Deck OLED or ROG Ally X and install supported games before leaving. Portal should be considered only when you have a dependable route to your PS5 or to the supported cloud catalog.
Recommended Free Tools
You care most about PlayStation controller features
Portal is the clear match because its haptics and adaptive triggers are part of its design. Those effects still depend on support in the game being streamed.
How we picked these recommendations
The recommendations use documented capabilities rather than unverified performance rankings:
- Game source: PS5 Remote Play and selected cloud streaming versus local Steam or Windows installations.
- Platform friction: SteamOS’s console-like interface versus Windows 11 and multi-store support.
- Controls and display: DualSense features, Deck OLED’s OLED panel and trackpads, and Ally X’s 1080p 120Hz screen.
- Connectivity: whether the core experience depends on broadband streaming or can run supported local installs.
- Battery and portability: stated battery capacity, Valve’s content-dependent runtime range, display size and the listed Ally X weight, without turning those figures into an unsupported runtime ranking.
- Ownership requirements: Portal’s need for a PS5 for Remote Play, compared with the self-contained PC handheld approach of Deck OLED and Ally X.
What is the bottom line?
Buy PlayStation Portal Remote Player for the simplest way to extend an existing PS5 to another screen, provided streaming requirements fit your network. Buy Steam Deck OLED for local Steam gaming with the most console-like PC experience and distinctive controls. Buy ROG Ally X for Windows flexibility across Game Pass and multiple PC storefronts. The best portable is the one whose game source, connectivity and software model match how you actually play.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a PS5 to use PlayStation Portal?
You need a PS5 for Portal’s standard Remote Play feature. A PlayStation Plus Premium cloud-streaming session can use selected eligible games without the PS5 being powered on, but catalog, region and plan restrictions apply.
Can ROG Ally X run games from Xbox Game Pass?
Yes. ASUS lists Xbox Game Pass among the services supported by the Windows 11-based Ally X. Individual games can still have their own hardware, account or online requirements.
Can I add storage to Steam Deck OLED and ROG Ally X?
Both devices document microSD support: Valve lists microSD expansion for Steam Deck, and ASUS lists a microSD card reader for Ally X. Card performance and game compatibility can vary, so use storage intended for handheld gaming.
Does Steam Deck OLED include a Windows license?
The cited Steam Deck specifications describe SteamOS and PC functionality, but they do not establish a bundled Windows license. Treat Windows installation as a separate software decision rather than an included feature.
