Which method should you choose?

Why a date can look right but still be text
Excel stores dates as sequential serial numbers so they can be used in calculations. Microsoft Support gives January 1, 1900 as serial number 1 in Excel’s default 1900 date system, and uses 39448 for January 1, 2008 in its example. A number format controls how the serial appears, so a number showing in a cell after conversion may simply need date formatting.
Formatting and conversion are different operations: formatting changes the appearance of a value, while conversion makes Excel treat the underlying entry as a date serial. For correct chronological sorting, a date/time column must contain serial values; text entries can sort as text even if they resemble dates.
Convert dates with Text to Columns
- Select the text-date column or range.
- Choose Data > Text to Columns.
- Move through the wizard’s delimiter stages as appropriate for the data. For a simple date column, review the preview and proceed to the column data format step.
- Select Date, then choose the order that matches the text already present—such as DMY or MDY. Do not choose an order based on how you want the finished date to look.
- Finish the wizard, then apply a date number format for the display you want.
- Check known dates, sort oldest to newest, and inspect boundary rows to catch misinterpretation.
Microsoft Support documents the Text to Columns wizard as a way to split text into columns. The explicit date-order conversion workflow is also described in a Microsoft Learn Q&A response; wizard labels and screens can differ by Excel platform or version.

Resolve ambiguous dates before converting the whole column
A value such as 04/05/2025 could mean April 5 or May 4. Excel cannot infer the intended meaning from that string alone. Confirm the source convention using documentation or an unambiguous entry—for example, a date whose day is greater than 12—then select the matching order in the wizard. If one column mixes conventions, standardize it first rather than applying one order to every row.
When Paste Special Add is appropriate
Paste Special > Add is a shortcut, not a universal text-date parser. It can coerce compatible text numbers through arithmetic, but it does not ask whether the source is DMY, MDY, or another order. Its result therefore depends on whether Excel can consistently recognize the entries under the workbook and system settings.

- Keep a copy of the original column or duplicate it for a test.
- Copy a cell containing the numeric value
1. - Select the test range and use Paste Special > Add.
- Apply a date number format and compare several converted entries with known source dates.
- Only use the method on the remaining data if those checks confirm the interpretation.
Microsoft’s documented text-date workflow uses DATEVALUE followed, when needed, by Paste Special > Values; it does not recommend Paste Special > Add specifically for text dates. Treat Add as a practical arithmetic-coercion shortcut, and switch to Text to Columns if values do not parse consistently or the date order is uncertain.
Use DATEVALUE when a formula column helps
Enter =DATEVALUE(A2) in a new column and fill the formula down. The function returns a serial number when Excel recognizes the text as a date. Check the output before replacing the source; if you need fixed results, copy the formula results and use Paste Special > Values, then apply a date format.

- If the text omits a year, DATEVALUE uses the computer’s current year, so the result can change with the date on which the formula is evaluated.
- DATEVALUE ignores time information in its argument, so do not use it when the time component must be retained.
- It only works for date text Excel recognizes; a formula does not resolve an unknown or inconsistent source convention by itself.
Checks and edge cases that can change the result
Keep source order separate from display format
Choose DMY or MDY to describe the order in the existing text. After conversion, choose a number format—such as a preferred regional date display—to control how the resulting serial is shown. Changing display format cannot repair a date that was interpreted in the wrong order.
Watch two-digit years
Microsoft documents Error Checking options for text dates with two-digit years and settings that determine which century those years map to. Four-digit years in the source are safer when you can obtain them.

Account for workbook date systems
Excel supports 1900 and 1904 date systems, and Microsoft documents an option to convert date systems automatically when copying between workbooks. A serial number copied from another workbook should be interpreted in the context of those settings.
For imported files, normalize at import when possible
Microsoft’s Text Import Wizard guidance says date columns must closely match Excel built-in or custom date formats to be converted. If you control the import, choosing or standardizing the source format there can avoid a later cleanup step.

Use sorting as a diagnostic
After conversion, sort oldest to newest and inspect entries around the beginning and end of the range. If dates sort alphabetically or calculations behave unexpectedly, some cells may still be text or may have been parsed incorrectly. A uniform-looking column is not proof that every entry is a date serial.
