There is no RPG-style hero upgrade screen in Order of the Sinking Star. In the Heroes and Light crossover, each hero keeps the ability learned in Hearty Heroes of Hauling; standing in a beam temporarily adds that beam’s power. The practical “upgrade order” is therefore a learning and unlock order: understand every hero’s base rule, master beam-enhanced behavior, follow the area dependencies, and verify your board against the current version before copying a solution.
For the separate Heroes and Light, Advanced area, the documented low-friction route is to clear Bard memory rooms and the outer courtyard, then finish the burned Hell-town chain to activate the Hell teleporter to the Antipode. The broad campaign suggestion is North, East, West, South, then Gold Rooms, but that is guidance rather than a mandatory lock.
What does “hero upgrade priority” mean in Order of the Sinking Star?
It means prioritizing abilities and access to new puzzle spaces, not spending currency on stronger statistics. Arc Games describes Order of the Sinking Star as a narrative puzzle adventure by Thekla, Inc., led by Jonathan Blow, with more than 1,000 hand-crafted puzzles and hundreds of hours of play. The available documentation does not describe character levels, ascension, equipment rarity, persistent hero stats, or an upgrade shop.

The relevant system combines the heroes from Hearty Heroes of Hauling with the beam-routing rules of the Vault of the Beamcasters. A hero’s normal ability remains available, while occupying a beam grants the power associated with that beam. Crystals and goblins can also be moved or affected through beam routes, so progress depends on spatial planning rather than a numerical build.

Which heroes and beams are in Heroes and Light, Advanced?
The advanced guide documents five heroes: Thief, Bard, Wizard, Warrior, and Druid. The documented beam colors for this area are purple, gold, and green. Treat the roster as a set of puzzle tools: the right question is not “Which hero has the highest damage?” but “Which movement rule, combined with which beam, changes this room?”
| Element | What the documentation supports | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Hero ability | Each hero retains the ability learned in Hearty Heroes of Hauling. | Identify the hero’s ordinary movement or interaction rule before routing beams. |
| Beam power | Standing in a beam gives the hero that beam’s power. | Plan where the hero must stand, when the effect is needed, and how to leave safely. |
| Beam objects | Crystals and goblins participate in the beam-routing puzzle system. | Consider object positions and beam propagation, not only the hero’s path. |
| Advanced roster | Thief, Bard, Wizard, Warrior, and Druid. | Switch mental models between heroes; the area is not a conventional party-combat system. |
| Advanced colors | Purple, gold, and green beams are documented. | Use color changes as state changes in a room, not as character statistics. |
What should I learn first?
Start with the base rule for every hero, then learn how that rule changes in a beam. This sequence prevents a common mistake: treating a beam as a permanent upgrade when it is actually a positional condition that must be created and maintained.
1. Rehearse the hero’s base ability
Before attempting an advanced room, state the hero’s normal rule in plain language. What can the hero occupy, cross, push, trigger, or avoid without any beam? If you cannot predict the result of a move in the unpowered state, adding a beam usually makes the room harder to debug.

Observe what changes when the hero stands in a purple, gold, or green beam. Determine whether the effect changes movement, interaction, or access to a tile. Then identify the exact moment the hero must be powered; many solutions require entering a beam, performing one action, and leaving before the beam route changes.
3. Include crystals and goblins in your plan
Beam puzzles are not only about walking a hero to a colored line. Crystals and goblins can be part of the route and can alter what the beam reaches. Draw the intended beam path first, mark every object that can interrupt or redirect it, and only then choose the hero’s movement sequence.
4. Record reversible states
When a room has several possible beam configurations, pause after each state that can be recreated. A short note such as “gold reaches the upper gate when the crystal is on the left” is more useful than memorizing a long move string. It also makes recovery easier if a later action changes the room.

How large are the main and advanced Heroes and Light areas?
The documented main Heroes and Light area contains 54 puzzles. Heroes and Light, Advanced is a separate area documented as 22 puzzles across six screens. Do not use the advanced count as a continuation of the main area’s numbering or assume that puzzle numbers establish a universal play order.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The main area is the broad introduction to the crossover rules. The advanced area compresses those ideas into denser rooms and uses the five-hero roster and three documented beam colors. If a walkthrough labels a room differently from your map, compare the area name, screen, and starting arrangement rather than relying on a number alone.
What is the best order for Heroes and Light, Advanced?
Use unlock dependencies rather than puzzle numbers. The documented route puts Bard memory rooms and the outer courtyard first. After those are complete, solve the burned Hell-town chain. Finishing that chain activates the Hell teleporter to the Antipode.
- Clear Bard memory rooms. Treat these rooms as rule-learning and access work. If a room appears unsolved, check whether the required Bard state has actually been completed rather than skipping ahead by number.
- Finish the outer courtyard. The courtyard is part of the documented dependency route. Confirm that its exits or triggers have resolved before searching for the Hell sequence.
- Enter the burned Hell-town sequence. Work through the connected chain in the state presented by your board. Keep track of beam and object positions between rooms; a change in one room can explain why a later entrance is available.
- Activate the Hell teleporter. The teleporter is the progression check for the Antipode. If it does not activate, revisit the Bard-memory and courtyard prerequisites before repeating random puzzles.
- Proceed to the Antipode. Once the teleporter is active, the Antipode becomes the next meaningful destination in this documented route.
This is an unlock route, not a claim that every player must solve exactly one fixed sequence. The game’s puzzle structure allows experimentation, but the listed dependencies explain why attempting the Antipode too early can appear to stall progression.
Should I follow North, East, West, South, then Gold Rooms?
That order is a useful broad campaign recommendation, not a mandatory progression lock. A current guide suggests North first, East second, West and South afterward, then Gold Rooms because it introduces the world in a relatively low-friction sequence. Individual room dependencies still control what actually opens.
| Route stage | Reason to consider it | What it is not |
|---|---|---|
| North | Recommended starting region for a gradual introduction. | Not a requirement enforced by a hero-stat system. |
| East | Suggested second region in the broad route. | Not proof that every East puzzle must precede every West puzzle. |
| West and South | Explore after the first two regions as your understanding improves. | Not a single fixed order between West and South. |
| Gold Rooms | Suggested later destination once the core route is familiar. | Not a reward tier or upgrade shop. |
Use this route when you want fewer abrupt rule changes. Deviate when an open entrance, a visible dependency, or your preferred puzzle style gives you a reason. The important distinction is between world routing and local unlock conditions: the former is flexible advice, while the latter determines whether a specific door, teleporter, or screen can be used.

Why does a walkthrough not match my board?
The map reference records an update on October 14, 2026 that changed some levels and checkpoints. A different starting layout is therefore a reason to stop and verify the room, not to force the old move sequence.
Use this board-verification checklist
- Confirm that the guide names the same area: main Heroes and Light or Heroes and Light, Advanced.
- Match the screen or room title, not just a puzzle number.
- Compare the initial positions of heroes, crystals, goblins, beam sources, and blocked tiles.
- Check whether the guide predates the October 14, 2026 update.
- If any starting element differs, rebuild the solution from the current state instead of executing moves mechanically.
When rebuilding, first identify the room’s goal, then the beam route that makes the goal possible, then the object moves that preserve that route. A move list copied from a different checkpoint can be internally correct and still fail on your board.
How do I troubleshoot an apparent progression lock?
Most apparent locks are caused by a missing dependency, an unrecognized beam state, or a version mismatch. Diagnose them in that order.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Antipode is unavailable
Return to the documented prerequisites: Bard memory rooms, outer courtyard, and the burned Hell-town chain. The Hell teleporter activates only after the relevant chain is complete; repeatedly attempting the destination without checking those rooms will not create a new hero ability.
A hero cannot perform the expected action
Ask whether the hero is standing in the required beam. A hero’s base ability and beam-enhanced behavior are separate states. Move the beam or hero deliberately, observe the state change, and avoid assuming that a power persists after the hero leaves the beam.
A crystal or goblin is blocking the solution
Recalculate the beam route with that object included. Objects are part of the puzzle system, so moving the hero first may destroy the line needed for the crystal or goblin. Find a safe staging tile, route the object, and then restore the hero’s position.

The guide’s checkpoint is impossible to reproduce
Check the patch date and starting layout. If your board differs from the guide’s first frame, use the guide for concepts rather than exact inputs and solve from your current checkpoint.
What should I avoid when planning hero progression?
- Do not search for a nonexistent stat build. The documented system provides abilities, beams, objects, and unlocks—not an RPG upgrade currency.
- Do not rank heroes by combat power. Their value is room-dependent; a less obvious ability may be the key to a particular beam arrangement.
- Do not equate puzzle number with order. Advanced rooms are organized across screens and dependencies, so numbering is not a reliable route map.
- Do not treat the broad world route as a lock. North–East–West/South–Gold Rooms is guidance for learning flow.
- Do not force an outdated solution. Verify the board after the October 14, 2026 changes.
- Do not reset immediately after one failed move. Determine whether the failure changed a reversible beam or object state; understanding the state is often faster than restarting.
How should I make my own solution notes?
Use a compact room record so that your notes survive a later return or a changed checkpoint. Write the area and screen, the initial beam colors, each hero’s starting tile, object positions, the target state, and the smallest sequence of irreversible actions. Mark which steps require a hero to be powered and which can be performed in the base state.
For a multi-room chain such as burned Hell-town, keep one line for the prerequisite that opens the next room. This makes it clear whether you are blocked by a puzzle solution or by an uncompleted unlock. For the Antipode route, record the moment the Hell teleporter becomes active; that is a more reliable milestone than a puzzle number.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is there a genuine hero “best” choice?
No universal best hero is supported by the documentation. The advanced roster exists because different abilities interact differently with beam positions, crystals, goblins, and room geometry. Choose the hero whose rule matches the room’s immediate constraint, then decide which beam state is needed to extend that rule.
If you are learning the crossover, favor the hero and room that let you isolate one concept at a time. If you are optimizing your own route, favor whichever open dependency reduces backtracking. Neither approach requires assigning permanent upgrades or abandoning a hero.

For a clean first pass, use this sequence:
- Learn every hero’s unpowered ability in the main area.
- Practice one beam color at a time, then combine beam states with hero movement.
- Include crystals and goblins in your mental map from the beginning.
- In Advanced, clear Bard memory rooms and the outer courtyard.
- Complete the burned Hell-town chain and confirm the Hell teleporter activates.
- Enter the Antipode only after that activation.
- Use North, East, West, South, then Gold Rooms as a broad route if you want structured exploration.
- Before following any external move list, verify its screen, checkpoint, and patch context against your board.
This plan prioritizes understanding and access. It remains valid even when you choose a different optional room order because it is based on mechanics and dependencies rather than an invented level-up system.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Order of the Sinking Star have hero levels, gear, or an upgrade currency?
The documented Heroes and Light material does not describe levels, gear rarity, ascension, or a hero-upgrade currency. Progress comes from solving rooms, using each hero’s existing ability, and creating the required beam states.
Can I skip the main Heroes and Light area and play Advanced first?
The areas are documented separately, with 54 puzzles in the main area and 22 puzzles across six screens in Advanced. You may explore in a different order when entrances allow it, but learning the base hero and beam rules first generally makes the advanced rooms easier to interpret.
What do the purple, gold, and green beams actually change?
A beam supplies its associated power while the hero stands in it. The exact consequence is room- and hero-dependent, so observe the powered state in each puzzle rather than assuming one color always means one universal movement rule.

Why did a previously solved checkpoint change after an update?
The map reference notes an October 14, 2026 update that changed some levels and checkpoints. Reconfirm the room and initial layout, then adapt the solution to the current board instead of treating an older move sequence as authoritative.
How do I know whether I am missing a puzzle or an unlock requirement?
Check whether the blocked destination is the Antipode or another teleporter, then review the prerequisite rooms in the relevant chain. For the documented Antipode route, Bard memory rooms, the outer courtyard, and the burned Hell-town sequence must be completed before the Hell teleporter activates.
