The key difference is whether you stake something of value for a chance to win something you can take out. Online slots offered by gambling services generally involve real-money stakes and potential real-world payouts. Conventional social casino games imitate slots and other casino games but use virtual credits that cannot be withdrawn or traded. Some sell extra credits or features, so the label “social casino” alone does not tell you how a particular game works—or whether it is lawful where you live.
How online slots and social casino games differ
Online slots are slot-style games provided through an online gambling service. Players stake money, or something applicable rules treat as money’s worth, for a possible real-world payout. Withdrawals are subject to the service’s terms, account checks, and local law.
Social casino games simulate slots and other casino games, such as blackjack and roulette. They commonly appear in apps, on websites, or on social platforms. In the conventional closed-loop model described by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), players use virtual credits, cannot withdraw winnings, and cannot trade the credits with other players. The games may be free to download and play, while offering optional purchases of more credits or features. ACCC submission on social casinos
| Question | Online slots | Conventional social casino games |
|---|---|---|
| What do you play? | Slot-style casino games through an online gambling service. | Simulated slots and other casino games, often in apps, websites, or social platforms. |
| What do you stake? | Money or something treated as money’s worth under applicable rules. | Often free virtual credits; extra credits or features may be available for purchase. |
| Can you withdraw winnings? | Real-money services offer potential winnings, subject to terms, account checks, and applicable law. | In the ACCC-described closed-loop model, winnings cannot be withdrawn and credits cannot be traded between players. |
| What else matters? | Whether the service is licensed where you are and what local law permits. | Whether currency or prizes can be redeemed or traded, the actual terms, and local law. |
Why the game’s label is not enough
“Social,” “free-to-play,” or “sweepstakes” describes how a product is presented; it does not establish whether its credits or prizes have real-world value. Check what you pay for, whether you can redeem or trade credits, and whether prizes can be cashed out or exchanged for something tangible.

The UK Gambling Commission says virtual currencies are generally issued and controlled by developers. Its UK guidance says that items convertible into cash or tradeable for items of value attain real-world value; where gambling uses those items, a licence is required in the same manner as when casino chips can later be exchanged for cash. This is UK guidance, not a universal legal test. UK Gambling Commission: Digital and virtual currencies
Likewise, Louisiana’s Attorney General warned in 2025 that some sites called “sweepstakes” or “social casino” may offer payouts or material prizes, and that the label does not itself make an offering lawful under Louisiana law. That warning concerns Louisiana; it should not be read as a nationwide legal rule. Louisiana Attorney General’s 2025 notice

How to check what a specific game offers
- Identify what you stake. Check whether play uses only free credits, purchased credits, money, or another item of value.
- Check the payout and redemption terms. Look for whether winnings can be withdrawn, exchanged for prizes, or redeemed for cash or other value.
- Check whether credits can be traded. A closed-loop model does not allow credits to be redeemed or traded between players; do not assume a game follows that model without checking its terms.
- Understand purchases. Determine whether payments buy credits, gameplay, or features, and whether those purchases are optional.
- Verify local licensing and rules. Check the operator’s legal status with the regulator for your location. Terms and laws can change, and rules differ by jurisdiction.
These checks help distinguish a simulated game from gambling that involves money or money’s worth, but they do not replace local legal advice or establish whether a particular service is lawful.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) considered social casino app ads that showed slot-like gameplay but did not offer withdrawable money or real-world prizes. It ruled that claims such as “huge payouts,” “win massive prizes,” and becoming a “billionaire overnight” could mislead consumers by implying that cash or tangible prizes were available. The ruling applied to the advertiser and complaint at issue; it is a practical reminder to distinguish virtual in-game rewards from money or prizes that can actually be claimed.
