Neither service is the universal winner. Choose OneDrive when your files already live in a Microsoft account and the allowance on your Microsoft 365 or OneDrive plan fits your needs. Choose Google Drive when you rely on a Google Account, Gmail, or Google Photos and want one storage pool for all three. The headline capacities are not directly comparable: Microsoft lists 5 GB free, 100 GB on Basic, and 1 TB on Personal, while Google offers up to 15 GB shared by Drive, Gmail, and Photos. Family rules, your billing country, and when a Microsoft subscription began can change the better value. The practical method is to inventory what your account already stores, confirm the exact plan and renewal terms, then buy capacity in the ecosystem you already use.
What is the difference between OneDrive and Google Drive?
OneDrive and Google Drive are consumer cloud-file services, but their quotas are attached to different account systems. OneDrive capacity is defined by a Microsoft account and the specific Microsoft plan. Google Drive uses the storage quota of the entire Google Account, so Gmail messages and attachments and Google Photos also consume the same allowance.
That distinction matters more than the headline number. A Google Account showing 15 GB free does not give Drive a dedicated 15 GB; mail and photo data can reduce the space available for files. Microsoft’s published quota page describes OneDrive cloud storage for files, photos, and email attachments while listing Outlook mailbox storage separately, so the two companies are not defining an identical bucket.

| Service and account | Published free allowance | What the allowance covers |
|---|---|---|
| OneDrive free account | 5 GB | Microsoft cloud storage associated with the account |
| Google Account | Up to 15 GB | One shared pool for Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos |
On the nominal number alone, Google starts with more space. If you use Gmail heavily or back up a large photo library, however, that 15 GB may fill much sooner than expected because those services draw from the same pool. A person who uses Google primarily for documents and keeps mail and photos small may get close to the full allowance for Drive; someone with years of mail attachments and photos may not.

OneDrive’s 5 GB is a smaller starting quota, but it is not shared with a Google-style Photos and Gmail pool. Microsoft’s page separately identifies mailbox storage, so do not assume that adding files to OneDrive and adding messages to Outlook consume an identical quota without checking the limits shown in your account.
How much storage do the paid plans provide?
| Provider and plan | Storage entitlement stated in the current product information | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft OneDrive Basic | 100 GB | Plan capacity listed by Microsoft; price depends on market and checkout terms. |
| Microsoft OneDrive Personal | 1 TB | Plan capacity listed by Microsoft; confirm the plan attached to your account. |
| Microsoft Family or Premium, existing subscriptions | 1 TB per person for up to six people | Applies to specified subscriptions started before October 8, 2026; later renewal changes apply. |
| Microsoft Family or Premium, new subscriptions | 2 TB shared storage | For subscriptions beginning October 8, 2026, under Microsoft’s new allowance. |
| Microsoft Pro | 5 TB shared-storage transition is described by Microsoft | The schedule is separate from Family and Premium; verify the current Pro terms. |
| Google One standard paid plans | Plans begin at 100 GB | Available tiers and prices vary by location and are shown at checkout. |
Microsoft’s figures are product entitlements, not annual statistics. The date a multi-person subscription started or renews can determine whether its allowance is calculated per person or as a shared pool. A Family or Premium subscription that began before October 8, 2026 is listed as 1 TB per person for up to six people. New Family and Premium subscriptions beginning October 8, 2026 are listed as 2 TB shared storage, and Microsoft says existing subscriptions move to that shared allowance at renewals beginning May 2, 2027. Pro subscriptions follow their own 5 TB shared-storage transition schedule.
Google’s standard Google One information starts paid plans at 100 GB, but Google says plan availability and prices depend on location. The amount displayed for one country, currency, or account cannot be treated as a worldwide price. Check the account’s own checkout page rather than relying on an old comparison chart.
How does family storage work on each service?
OneDrive family allowances
Microsoft’s treatment depends on the subscription cohort. Some existing Family, Premium, and Pro subscriptions provide 1 TB per person for as many as six people. New Family and Premium subscriptions beginning October 8, 2026 use a 2 TB shared allowance, with existing subscriptions scheduled to move when renewals begin May 2, 2027. Because Pro has a separate transition schedule, a Pro account should be checked against Microsoft’s current plan page rather than inferred from the Family rules.

Google One family sharing
Google One can make a plan’s storage available to a family group of the plan manager and up to five additional members. Shared capacity does not make everyone’s files visible: each member’s files remain private unless that member deliberately shares a file or folder. The 30 GB Lite tier does not support family sharing.
“Shared storage” therefore describes how quota is allocated, not a common folder. A family can use a common allowance while retaining separate accounts and private files. Before joining a group, identify which account will manage billing and which accounts actually need additional space.
What happens when Google storage is full?
Google documents consequences across the whole account, not just for new Drive files. When the quota is exhausted, Drive uploads and synchronization stop, Gmail sending and receiving are affected, and Google Photos backups stop. A person who thinks only about Drive can therefore miss an email or lose automatic photo backups when the shared pool reaches its limit.

How should you compare price and value?
There is no supported universal price winner. Google states that Google One plans and prices vary by location, and Microsoft’s quota information does not provide a stable global price comparison. A fair comparison uses the price and currency shown after signing in, the billing interval, taxes where applicable, and the exact storage entitlement attached to your plan.
- Start with the account you already pay for. If a Microsoft subscription already includes the storage you need, adding a separate Google plan may duplicate cost. The reverse is also true for a Google One subscriber.
- Compare usable, not headline, capacity. Deduct the space already occupied by Gmail and Photos from a Google Account’s shared pool. For Microsoft, verify whether your plan is an individual allowance or a family shared allowance.
- Check the renewal date and cohort. Microsoft’s Family and Premium rules change for subscriptions beginning October 8, 2026 and for existing subscriptions at renewals beginning May 2, 2027.
- Record the billing region. A price seen in another country or currency is not evidence of what your account will be charged.
- Include every person who will use the plan. A six-person Microsoft allowance and a Google family group of up to six total people are not automatically equivalent because the storage model differs.
Which service is right for your account?
Choose OneDrive when your Microsoft account is the center of your files
OneDrive is the more direct fit if your existing documents and photos are already in a Microsoft account and the account’s plan supplies enough capacity. The published ladder is straightforward for individual plans: 5 GB free, 100 GB Basic, and 1 TB Personal. For households, read the subscription date and the shared-versus-per-person wording before deciding; the 2026 changes make an old comparison table unreliable.
This choice also avoids moving files simply to obtain a different quota system. The benefit is practical continuity: you keep the storage entitlement and account that already hold your files. It is not evidence that OneDrive is faster, safer, or better for collaboration; the available product material does not establish those comparisons.
Choose Google Drive when Gmail and Photos are part of the same storage decision
Google Drive is the more natural fit if your documents, Gmail, and Google Photos already share one Google Account. Paid Google One plans begin at 100 GB in the standard plan information, and family sharing can extend the plan to up to five additional members, subject to the family-eligible tier. The trade-off is that every message attachment and backed-up photo competes with Drive for the same quota.

Google is especially easy to underestimate when the Drive folder itself looks small. Check the whole account before buying: an apparently generous 15 GB free allowance may be largely consumed outside Drive.
How can you make the choice step by step?
- List the accounts you actually use. Write down the Microsoft account(s), Google Account(s), email services, and photo-backup services that contain data you want to keep.
- Measure the current footprint. For Google, include Drive, Gmail, and Photos because they draw from one pool. For Microsoft, note the OneDrive usage and the plan name shown in the account; do not merge it with separately listed Outlook mailbox limits without confirmation.
- Classify the storage need. Separate documents, photos, mail, and shared household data. This reveals whether a family plan or an individual plan is the relevant comparison.
- Read the plan’s cohort wording. If Microsoft shows Family, Premium, or Pro, record when the subscription began and its next renewal date. The allowance may change under the schedules Microsoft lists for 2026 and 2027.
- Check family eligibility. Google’s 30 GB Lite tier cannot be shared with a family group. Microsoft’s per-person and shared rules depend on plan and subscription timing.
- Open the local checkout page. Compare the currency, recurring price, billing period, and storage amount offered to your signed-in account. Treat a price from another region as irrelevant to your purchase decision.
- Apply a growth margin. Estimate how much new mail, photos, and files you add in a year. A plan that barely covers today’s usage can trigger another purchase or account disruption soon.
- Decide whether moving is worth the administration. If the existing ecosystem already meets your need, staying may be simpler than relocating files and changing backup destinations just to obtain a different headline quota.
What are the main pitfalls in comparing the two?
- Treating Google’s 15 GB as Drive-only space. Gmail and Photos can consume it before you upload many Drive files.
- Using an old Microsoft family table. The October 8, 2026 start date and May 2, 2027 renewal transition change how some subscriptions are described.
- Confusing shared quota with shared access. Google family storage pools capacity while leaving files private unless shared directly.
- Comparing a local price with a foreign price. Google explicitly makes availability and pricing location-dependent, and Microsoft’s published quota page is not a global price list.
- Assuming identical full-account behavior. Google documents effects on Drive, Gmail, and Photos; the reviewed Microsoft quota information does not document a matching sequence for OneDrive.
- Assuming capacity proves quality. The available evidence establishes quotas and account behavior, not comparative speed, security, reliability, or collaboration performance.
How should you switch or use both services?
You do not have to eliminate one service. Keeping both can be sensible when separate accounts serve different purposes, such as a Microsoft account for an existing personal archive and a Google Account for mail and photo backup. Decide which account is the authoritative copy of each folder, then avoid maintaining two independently edited copies unless you have a deliberate synchronization and backup plan.
Before changing a backup destination, confirm that the files you need are present in the new account and that the destination has enough headroom for future additions. For Google, include Gmail and Photos in that capacity check. For Microsoft, verify the named plan and any family transition date. Keep the old account available until you have checked the new location and are comfortable that no device is still uploading to an unexpected account.

What is the bottom line for OneDrive versus Google Drive?
Pick the service that matches the account ecosystem and the plan terms you can verify today. OneDrive offers 5 GB free, 100 GB Basic, and 1 TB Personal, with family allowances changing by Microsoft subscription cohort. Google offers up to 15 GB shared across Drive, Gmail, and Photos, paid Google One capacity beginning at 100 GB in its standard plan information, and family sharing on eligible tiers. Compare your actual usage, family arrangement, region, and renewal date; those details determine value more reliably than a generic “best cloud storage” ranking.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use OneDrive and Google Drive at the same time?
Yes. They are separate account ecosystems, so you can keep files in both. Assign each folder a clear primary home and watch for duplicate copies, because using two services does not merge their quotas or automatically create a coordinated backup.
Is Google’s 15 GB free allowance equivalent to 15 GB of OneDrive?
No. Google’s allowance is one pool for Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos, while Microsoft publishes OneDrive cloud capacity separately from Outlook mailbox storage. The same number of gigabytes can therefore provide different usable room for files.
What should a family check before joining a storage plan?
Confirm who controls billing, which accounts need extra capacity, and whether the plan actually permits family sharing. Google’s 30 GB Lite tier is excluded, and Microsoft’s allowance depends on the plan and the subscription’s start or renewal timing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy did my available Google Drive space fall even though I added no files?
New Gmail attachments or Google Photos backups can use the same Google Account pool. Because all three services share the quota, activity outside Drive can reduce the space available for future uploads.
How can I avoid choosing a plan that becomes too small next year?
Use your current total across the relevant services, estimate the yearly increase in photos, mail, and files, and leave room for growth. Recheck the plan after a renewal or family-plan change, especially when Microsoft’s published transition dates apply.
