The biggest difference is the console: Nintendo Switch Sports is a Nintendo Switch game, while Wii Sports Resort is a Wii game. They also use different motion controllers and offer different activities. Choose based first on the system and controllers you own, then on which sports and play options you want.

Which console do you need?

Nintendo Switch Sports

Nintendo Switch Sports was released on April 29, 2022, for Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s US product page also lists it as supported on Switch 2, with behavior consistent with the Switch version. It is not playable in Handheld Mode, so plan to play with compatible Joy-Con controllers rather than using the console as a handheld game.

Wii Sports Resort

Wii Sports Resort was released on July 24, 2009, for Wii. It is not a Switch version of the game: owning a Switch does not let you play the Wii release. The two games are separate titles for different consoles, not interchangeable editions. Nintendo describes Switch Sports as a continuation of the Wii Sports series, but that does not mean it includes every Resort activity.

How do their sports and activities compare?

Switch Sports’ confirmed lineup

Nintendo lists eight activities for Switch Sports: Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, and Chambara, a swordplay activity. The lineup mixes familiar racket and ball sports with Bowling and swordplay.

Wii Sports Resort’s island activities

Nintendo’s Wii Sports Resort product page highlights fencing, jet-skiing, and flying-disc challenges among its island activities. That page does not supply a complete activity list, so it does not support a reliable item-by-item count or a claim that Switch Sports contains all Resort activities. If a particular Resort sport is the reason you want the game, check a complete game-specific list before buying.

What controllers and accessories do they require?

Switch Sports uses Joy-Con

Switch Sports requires compatible Joy-Con play styles; Nintendo says the game does not support Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 Pro Controllers. It also cannot be played in Handheld Mode. For some Soccer play, a Leg Strap holds a Joy-Con against the player’s leg. Nintendo includes the strap with the physical edition; digital-edition owners can buy one separately. Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with the Leg Strap, so check your controller setup if that mode matters to you. Nintendo’s compatibility and accessory FAQ.

Wii Sports Resort needs MotionPlus-capable controls

For Wii Sports Resort, Nintendo identifies either a Wii Remote Plus or a Wii Remote fitted with the Wii MotionPlus accessory. Before buying a used copy, verify that you have the required controller setup; the game listing alone does not establish what accessories a second-hand seller includes or their condition. How do multiplayer and online play differ?

Nintendo lists Switch Sports for 1–4 players on one system and 1–2 players online. Its online features include worldwide opponents, Pro League, and rotating avatar rewards. Online play requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo says players without a membership can try a competition against computer opponents through Play Globally. Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ.

Nintendo lists Wii Sports Resort for one to four players, including simultaneous multiplayer. The Resort product page reviewed here describes play with friends and family but does not establish a current online-service comparison. Do not assume the two games offer equivalent online play based on their product descriptions.

  • 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Switch Sports if you have a compatible Switch setup and want its listed sports, Joy-Con play, or Nintendo-described online features.
  • Choose Wii Sports Resort if you have a Wii and MotionPlus-capable controls and want its island activities.
  • Check before buying if you are relying on a particular controller, a Leg Strap, or accessories included with a used copy. Confirm the exact listing contents and condition with the seller.

Neither game is a substitute for the other on the same console: platform and controller compatibility are the first practical differences to settle.
