Use Confluence Cloud’s native importer when you need a Confluence-owned copy. Create a blank page or live doc, open More actions (…) → Templates and import, choose Import, select Google Doc, authorize Google when prompted, choose the document, and select Finish. Confluence creates editable content that you can review and publish.
If Google Drive must remain the source of truth, do not make a one-time copy. Use the Google Drive for Confluence app to embed the document URL, or use a Marketplace integration designed for live Google Docs editing. The choice determines whether later changes stay in Google Drive, Confluence, or both.
Which way should you move a Google Doc into Confluence Cloud?
Choose the method according to where the authoritative document should live. Native import copies the content into Confluence. An embedded Google Drive document remains in Drive and is displayed from a Confluence page. A specialized Marketplace integration can add live viewing or editing features, but its licensing and availability can change.

For a one-time migration, use the native importer. For a document that changes frequently in Google Drive, embed it instead of creating duplicate copies.

How do I import a Google Doc with Confluence Cloud’s built-in importer?
The importer is available from the editor’s Templates and import menu. The following sequence applies when creating a new page or live doc in Confluence Cloud.
- Open a blank Confluence page or live doc. Select Create, or use the plus sign beside Content in the sidebar.
- Open the editor menu. Beside Share, select More actions (…) → Templates and import.
- Switch to the import tools. In the dialog, select the Import tab.
- Choose the source type. Select Google Doc.
- Authorize Google if requested. Sign in to the Google account that can access the file and approve the requested connection.
- Select the document. Pick the Google Doc, or select multiple files when using the bulk workflow, then select Finish.
Atlassian describes this feature as a way to bring existing work into Confluence from Word, Google Docs, or OneDrive documents. A single-file import produces a page or live doc that can be modified and published like other Confluence content.
What should I do if the Google account prompt does not appear?
The importer may already have an authorized Google connection in the current browser session. If the file picker shows no documents, confirm that the signed-in Google account owns or can view the intended file, then retry the authorization flow with the correct account. A Confluence administrator may also restrict app connections, so an administrator should check the site’s app and identity policies if authorization is blocked.

Yes. The bulk workflow accepts up to 30 files with a combined total of 50 MB, and each individual file must be no larger than 10 MB. Bulk imports are not placed directly into your normal page tree: Confluence creates a restricted placeholder page or live doc titled with “Imported pages” plus date and time information, then places the imported items beneath it for review.
What does a native import create in Confluence?
A one-file import becomes its own Confluence page or live doc. It is ordinary Confluence content after creation: you can edit the text, change its location, apply Confluence permissions, and publish it according to your site’s workflow.
Bulk importing is intentionally staged. The restricted placeholder gives an administrator or content owner a chance to inspect the imported pages, check access, and organize or move them before they become part of the wider information architecture. Do not treat the placeholder as the final location; use it as a review queue.

Single-file and bulk limits

The 5 MB document figure excludes attachments, while the 10 MB one-file figure is the total limit. Check the file size before starting a migration, especially when the document contains large embedded media.
How should I prepare a Google Doc before importing it?
Preparation reduces cleanup in Confluence. The importer handles ordinary document structure, but Atlassian does not promise perfect conversion for every Google Docs feature, particularly complex layouts and uncommon image formats.
- Decide the destination. For a single page, identify the Confluence space and parent location before importing. For a batch, decide who will review the restricted placeholder and where each page should ultimately live.
- Remove unnecessary material. Delete obsolete sections, duplicate images, and temporary notes so the imported page is easier to proofread.
- Check headings. Use consistent heading levels in Google Docs. After import, confirm that the hierarchy still makes sense for Confluence navigation and accessibility.
- Audit tables. Look for merged cells, nested tables, unusual alignment, and very wide layouts. These are the elements most likely to need manual adjustment in a different editor.
- Review links. Make sure important links are still present and point to the intended destination. Links to private Google material may still require Google authentication after migration or embedding.
- Inventory images. Keep source images available so you can replace any that fail conversion. Atlassian documents support for BMP, CUR, DDS, GIF, ICO, JPG, PNG, PSD, SVG, and WEBP image types.
- Check file size. Compare the document and total file size with the applicable single-file or bulk limits before opening the importer.
- Record ownership. Note the Google Drive owner and the intended Confluence owner. A copied page needs a clear person or team responsible for future edits.
What should I review after the import?
Open the resulting page or live doc and proofread it before publishing. Treat the import as a conversion, not a guaranteed pixel-for-pixel reproduction.
Headings and page structure
Check that the title, heading levels, lists, and section order survived the conversion. A visually large line in Google Docs is not necessarily a semantic heading, so correct the hierarchy in Confluence if navigation or screen-reader interpretation is affected.
Tables and complex layouts
Compare every important table with the Google source. Rebuild cells, widths, or alignment that became difficult to read. Multi-column designs, floating elements, and other layout tricks may not map cleanly to Confluence’s editor.

Open links that readers rely on, including links inside tables and captions. Confirm that the target still exists and that the intended audience has access. A successful import does not grant Confluence readers access to a private Google Drive target.

Comments and editorial marks
Inspect comments, suggestions, and other review annotations separately from the body text. The official import documentation does not promise that every Google Docs collaboration feature will become an equivalent Confluence feature, so preserve any decision or requirement that matters before publishing.
Images and attachments
Scroll through the entire page and compare each image with the source. Atlassian states that unsupported image files are replaced with placeholder text. Replace a missing image with a supported file, or upload an approved replacement directly in Confluence, then check its caption, size, and accessibility text.
Permissions and publishing state
Review who can view and edit the new Confluence content before publishing or moving it. A native import creates Confluence content; Google Drive sharing settings are not a substitute for Confluence space permissions or page restrictions.
How do I embed a Google Doc instead of importing a copy?
Use the Google Drive for Confluence app when the Google file must remain the canonical document. The app embeds Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides on a Confluence page rather than converting the contents into an independent Confluence page.
- Open the Confluence page where the document should appear, or create a new page.
- Insert the Google Drive macro using the page editor’s macro controls, following your site’s app configuration.
- Paste the Google Drive URL. Atlassian documents automatic conversion when you paste a link, or you can configure the macro directly.
- Save or publish the page. Keep the Google file’s sharing settings aligned with the people who should view it.
- Test as a reader. Open the page with an account that represents the intended audience. Private files can prompt viewers to authenticate with Google.
An embed is useful for a policy, spreadsheet, or working document that changes often. It avoids maintaining two edited copies, but readers remain dependent on the Google file’s availability and permissions.
What happens when the Google file changes?
The embedded view points to the Google Drive document, so updates remain in Google Drive rather than becoming a new Confluence revision of copied text. Confluence page-level history will not replace Google Docs’ own version history for the embedded file.

Should I use a Marketplace integration for live editing?
A Marketplace integration may fit teams that need more than a simple display of a Drive URL. The listing for Google Docs for Confluence by ikuTeam describes live viewing, editing, real-time updates, and Google Drive permission mirroring.
Evaluate it as an app purchase and governance decision, not as the same operation as native import. Confirm that your Confluence edition is supported, review the permissions requested by the app, and check current licensing, pricing, data handling, and administrator approval in the Marketplace listing. Those details can change independently of Confluence’s built-in importer.

Most problems fall into a small number of categories. Identify the symptom first, then use the corresponding fix.
The document is missing from the picker
- Verify that the authorized Google account can open the file in Google Drive.
- Sign out of other Google accounts in the browser or repeat authorization with the account that owns the document.
- Ask a Confluence administrator whether app authorization or external integrations are restricted.
The import exceeds a size limit
- For one file, reduce large embedded media and check both the document size and total size, including attachments.
- For a batch, split the selection into smaller groups while staying within the per-file, combined-size, and file-count limits.
- Consider embedding the original Google file when reducing its size would damage the document.
Images became placeholder text
Replace unsupported image files with one of the documented formats: BMP, CUR, DDS, GIF, ICO, JPG, PNG, PSD, SVG, or WEBP. Re-import if the document is still being migrated, or replace the affected image in the Confluence editor after import.
The bulk pages are not where expected
Look for the restricted placeholder page or live doc whose title includes “Imported pages” and date/time information. Review its children, adjust their restrictions, and move them to the intended space locations only after access has been checked.
The page looks different from Google Docs
Prioritize meaning and usability over visual equivalence. Correct heading levels, rebuild hard-to-read tables, replace missing images, and verify links. For a highly designed document whose appearance must remain exact, embedding the Google file may be safer than converting it.

Readers cannot open an embedded document
Check the Google Drive sharing settings and test with a representative reader account. A private embedded file can require Google authentication, even when the Confluence page itself is visible.
How do I choose between importing and embedding?
Use this decision sequence before you move content.
- Will Confluence own the final text? If yes, import it. The resulting page or live doc can be edited and published through Confluence.
- Will the Google Doc continue changing outside Confluence? If yes, embed it so readers see the Drive source instead of a stale copy.
- Does the document contain complex design or unsupported media? If preserving the original appearance matters more than native Confluence editing, prefer an embed and test access.
- Are you moving many documents? Use bulk import only when you can assign someone to review the restricted placeholder and organize the child pages.
- Do you need real-time editing inside Confluence? Compare a suitable Marketplace integration with the simpler Google Drive macro, taking current permissions, licensing, and availability into account.
The safest migration is usually staged: import one representative document, inspect headings, tables, links, images, and permissions, then scale up. For a living Google workspace, embedding avoids duplicate maintenance; for a Confluence knowledge base, native import gives the clearest ownership and publishing workflow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a native Confluence import stay synchronized with the original Google Doc?
No. Native import creates Confluence content rather than a live connection to the Google file. If both copies are edited later, you must reconcile the differences manually or replace the workflow with an embed or live-editing integration.
Will Google Docs comments and suggestion history become Confluence comments?
Do not assume they will. The importer’s documented output is the page or live doc content, and Atlassian does not promise one-to-one conversion of every collaboration annotation. Preserve decisions and unresolved requests before importing if they are part of the project record.
Can people view an embedded Google Doc without a Google account?
Not always. Private files can prompt viewers to authenticate with Google, so access depends on the Drive document’s sharing policy as well as Confluence page access. Test the page with the same type of account your audience uses.
Is bulk import a good way to publish an entire documentation space immediately?
It is better treated as a staging operation. The imported pages are grouped under a restricted placeholder so someone can verify permissions, naming, and placement before exposing them in the normal Confluence hierarchy.
