Microsoft’s October 7, 2026 event was scheduled to explore how local AI could shape the next chapter of the PC, with Windows, Surface and NVIDIA RTX Spark in scope. As of October 4, Microsoft had not confirmed the event’s full announcement list or Windows 12. The clearest concrete product tied to the discussion is the announced Surface Laptop Ultra, but it was not yet cleared to ship.
What Microsoft has confirmed about the event
Microsoft had described the October 7, 2026 event as a look at how local AI could shape the next chapter of the PC. Pre-event reporting put Windows, Surface and NVIDIA RTX Spark within the event’s scope, but Microsoft’s exact reveals remained unknown as of October 4. Windows Latest’s October 3 report and WindowsForum’s October 3 analysis offer context, not a confirmed product roadmap.
That distinction matters: an event theme is not a promise that a particular feature, device or operating-system version will launch that day. Specific consumer features and the ultimate scope of announcements had not been confirmed.
What is the Surface Laptop Ultra?
Microsoft has announced the Surface Laptop Ultra, a physical laptop positioned for local AI, creative work and gaming. Its official product page lists a 15-inch mini-LED PixelSense Ultra touchscreen, USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, a headphone jack and a full-size SD card reader. Microsoft says the display reaches up to 2,000 nits peak HDR brightness, the device supports up to 128GB of unified memory, and its touchpad is over 30% larger than the one on Surface Laptop 7th Edition.

- STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 16 GB DDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth
Microsoft says the laptop uses a new NVIDIA chip capable of up to one petaflop of AI compute. That is a manufacturer-stated figure, not an independently verified benchmark. The product page does not provide comparative testing showing how the system performs on particular AI models, creative applications or games.
Can it run AI locally?
Microsoft says users can run AI models locally on the laptop, and describes local processing as a way to experiment, move faster and manage cloud costs. Local execution can also offer privacy and latency advantages for suitable workloads, according to Microsoft’s product positioning; those benefits are not guaranteed for every task. Some work may still rely on cloud models, depending on the model, application and user’s choices.

For buyers evaluating any local-AI PC, the useful questions are whether the applications they use support the hardware natively or through emulation, which tasks run on-device rather than in the cloud, and how much memory their chosen models require. The announced specifications alone do not establish how a particular workload will perform.
Availability and repair details
Microsoft’s page says the Surface Laptop Ultra has not yet received FCC equipment authorization and that shipment depends on successful authorization. The page reviewed does not state a confirmed sale date or price, so neither should be assumed. Microsoft also describes repair guides and replacement parts as planned; tools may be required, and availability of parts and service options can vary.

Will Microsoft announce Windows 12?
Windows 12 had not been confirmed for the October 7 event in reporting available by October 4. Microsoft’s focus on local AI and Windows does not, by itself, confirm a new Windows version or a specific agent feature. Treat claims that Windows 12 will launch at the event as speculation unless Microsoft confirms them.
