Microsoft’s first Azure cloud region in Malaysia, Malaysia West, is in Greater Kuala Lumpur and became generally available on May 28, 2025. It has three availability zones. Microsoft’s broader commitment announced in May 2024 was US$2.2 billion over four years—not a construction-only budget—and included infrastructure, skills training, government collaboration and developer support.

Where is Microsoft building Azure data centers in Malaysia?

Microsoft identifies the location of its Malaysia West cloud region as Greater Kuala Lumpur. The company has not publicly specified exact street addresses or the number of physical facilities making up the region in the cited announcements. A cloud region is a service location; it should not be treated as a published site-by-site map of data centers.

A separate May 2024 report by Malaysia’s Investment Development Authority (MIDA), citing The Malaysian Reserve, described a conditional land agreement for a plot in Pulai, Johor, and a construction contract involving Pasukhas. The reviewed information does not link those reported details to Malaysia West. They are not evidence that Malaysia West is in Johor.

When did Malaysia West open?

Microsoft announced Malaysia West as its first Malaysian cloud region on May 28, 2025, when it became generally available. The company had previously said the region was expected in the second quarter of 2025. “Generally available” means customers could access the region’s supported cloud services; it does not mean every Azure service or feature is necessarily offered there.

What is Malaysia West, and what does it offer?

Malaysia West is an Azure cloud region: a geographic location where Microsoft offers cloud services. Microsoft says it comprises three availability zones, which provide a zonal architecture for workloads designed to use them. Organizations should check the availability and architecture requirements of each service they plan to deploy rather than assume every service uses all three zones.

Microsoft says the region enables in-country data residency, security, and lower latency for Malaysian organizations. Data residency depends on the particular service, configuration, and workload: choosing a Malaysian region should not be taken as a blanket guarantee that every related piece of data remains in Malaysia. Customers should review the applicable service terms and data-location documentation for their deployment.

How much is Microsoft investing?

On May 2, 2024, Microsoft announced a US$2.2 billion investment in Malaysia over four years, describing it at the time as its largest investment in the country. The package was broader than data-center construction. Microsoft said it covered cloud and AI infrastructure, training an additional 200,000 people, collaboration with the government on a National AI Centre of Excellence and cybersecurity capabilities, and support for the developer community.

MIDA also reported on May 6, 2024, that a RM56.9 million lump-sum contract with Pasukhas was expected to be completed by June 30, 2025, and that a conditional agreement covered a 102,560-square-metre plot in Pulai, Johor for RM132.4 million. Those reported amounts and project details are distinct from Microsoft’s US$2.2 billion investment announcement and have not been tied in the reviewed sources to Malaysia West.

What economic and job impacts have been projected?

A Microsoft-commissioned IDC study, reported by Microsoft in March 2025, projected US$10.9 billion in new revenue and 37,575 jobs by 2028 across Microsoft, its partners, and organizations using cloud services. The projected jobs included 5,700 skilled IT jobs. These are forecasts, not realized revenue or a count of jobs already created; the underlying IDC report was not available in the cited materials for independent assessment.

Microsoft’s April 2024 fact sheet gave separate, dated figures for its Malaysian datacenters. It said 28 people were employed at the time, estimated more than 809 peak construction jobs and approximately 3.3 million work hours for construction of the new datacenters, and projected 82 employees and contractors across operational facilities by the end of 2026. These figures are not a current headcount and are not Malaysia West-only totals.

What has Microsoft said about the project?

At the May 2024 investment announcement, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said, “We are committed to supporting Malaysia’s AI transformation and ensure it benefits all Malaysians.” At the May 2025 launch, Microsoft cloud executive Scott Guthrie said the region would “enable organizations to accelerate their innovation more securely.” These are statements from company announcements, not independent assessments of the region’s outcomes.

What should organizations check before choosing Malaysia West?

  • Service availability: Confirm that each Azure service and feature your workload needs is available in Malaysia West.
  • Data location: Check the service-specific data residency terms and configure the workload accordingly.
  • Resilience: Determine whether your application needs zone redundancy and whether the relevant services support it.
  • Latency and compliance: Evaluate network performance for your users and confirm that the deployment meets your security and regulatory requirements.

Microsoft has not published facility-level measurements in the cited sources for Malaysia West’s actual energy use, water use, or emissions. The available information therefore does not support a quantified assessment of the region’s environmental performance.
