Yes, Microsoft is bringing AI upscaling to Xbox-related hardware, but the feature currently documented for Xbox is a preview on the ROG Xbox Ally X when it is docked to an external display—not a general Xbox Series X|S feature. The technology is Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR), a Windows feature that renders supported games at a lower resolution and upscales the image. Separately, Microsoft is developing Project Helix, its next-generation console with AMD; its rendering plans are still a roadmap, not a released consumer feature.

What Microsoft’s Xbox AI upscaling is today

Auto SR is Microsoft’s current AI super-resolution technology for supported Windows hardware. It aims to improve the balance between image quality and frame rate: a game renders fewer pixels, and Auto SR reconstructs the output at a higher resolution. Microsoft says that can produce smoother play without giving up as much apparent sharpness.

For Xbox, the currently documented implementation is narrower than the headline might suggest. Microsoft’s DirectX Developer Blog says Auto SR is in preview for Xbox Insiders using the ROG Xbox Ally X in docked play. Microsoft has not described it as a feature for Xbox Series X|S consoles.

How Auto SR differs from DLSS, FSR, and driver-level upscaling

The important distinction is where the upscaler operates and what information it can use. Microsoft’s DirectX team groups game-integrated techniques such as AMD FSR Upscaling, Intel XeSS, and NVIDIA DLSS separately from driver-level approaches such as AMD RSR and NVIDIA Image Scaling.

Approach Where it runs Game information available What that means
Game-integrated upscaling, including FSR Upscaling, XeSS, and DLSS Integrated into an individual game Can use in-game data such as motion vectors and mip bias Its availability depends on the game’s implementation.
Driver-level upscaling, including AMD RSR and NVIDIA Image Scaling At the graphics-driver level Lacks the in-game data available to an integrated method Can work across more games, but without those inputs.
Microsoft Auto SR Built into Windows Microsoft presents it as a way to extend high-quality super-resolution coverage to games without an integrated solution On the ROG Xbox Ally X, Microsoft says the larger models run on the processor’s NPU alongside the GPU.

Auto SR is therefore not simply Microsoft’s name for an Xbox-console version of DLSS. Its current Xbox-related preview is a Windows feature on a specific handheld PC, while Project Helix is a separate console development effort. The available information does not establish that Auto SR and the upscalers named above deliver identical image quality, latency, compatibility, or frame-rate results across games.

What the ROG Xbox Ally X preview does

Microsoft says it chose docked play because softness and frame-rate drops are easier to notice on larger, higher-resolution displays. Its DirectX Developer Blog reports that Auto SR can provide “1440p-like” visuals and, in a Forza Horizon 5 comparison, a frame-rate boost of more than 30%. That is a Microsoft-reported result for that comparison, not a guarantee for every game or setup.

Microsoft says the ROG Xbox Ally X’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme NPU runs larger Auto SR models in parallel with the GPU. The DirectX team contrasts this with GPU-based upscaling, which has to fit within a tight 1–2 ms GPU frame-time budget. The claim is about the processing path Microsoft describes for this device; it does not establish that upscaling has no performance cost in every circumstance.

Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog also describes docked Auto SR as providing 1440p-like detail with smooth frame rates, and says the feature can be controlled through Game Bar. The blog does not establish a universal Xbox setting path, so do not assume the option is available on an Xbox Series X|S dashboard.

Requirements and compatibility

Microsoft Support lists the following conditions for Auto SR. The eligible hardware options are distinct: a supported Copilot+ PC or an ROG Xbox Ally X enrolled in Xbox Insiders for docked play.

Requirement Microsoft’s listed condition
Operating system Windows 11 version 24H2 or later
Device A supported Copilot+ PC with Snapdragon X/X2 or Intel Core Ultra Series 3; alternatively, an ROG Xbox Ally X enrolled in Xbox Insiders and docked to a display
Display 1080p or higher
Software and drivers Current graphics and neural-processor drivers, plus the current Auto SR package
Game and architecture A DirectX 10-or-later game running natively on x64, through x64 emulation, or on Arm64
Suggested input resolution For ROG Xbox Ally X, Microsoft’s ideal guidance includes 1280×720. For supported Copilot+ PC platforms, it lists ranges from 1280×800 to 1920×1080.

Microsoft lists DirectX 9, Vulkan, OpenGL, some x86-only games, and certain formats such as 10-bit formats as unsupported. Meeting the device and display requirements alone is not enough if the game or format falls into an unsupported category.

What Project Helix means for a future Xbox

Project Helix is Microsoft’s next-generation first-party Xbox console project, developed with AMD. In its March 11, 2026 GDC summary, Xbox Wire said the system is designed to play Xbox console and PC games and will use a custom AMD SoC alongside co-designed next-generation DirectX and FSR technology.

Xbox Wire also says Project Helix integrates intelligence into the graphics and compute pipeline and is intended to deliver an order-of-magnitude leap in ray-tracing performance and capability. These are statements about the project’s goals, not independently verified performance measurements or final consumer specifications.

Microsoft’s stated development milestone is to begin shipping alpha hardware to developers in 2027. That is not a consumer release date. Xbox Wire’s figures of more than 5,000 developers building for Xbox, more than 1,500 games in the Xbox Play Anywhere catalog, and 500 development teams that have shipped Xbox Play Anywhere games describe the wider Xbox ecosystem, not Auto SR performance or Project Helix hardware specifications.

What this means if you have an Xbox Series X|S

There is no basis in Microsoft’s current Auto SR documentation to say the feature works on Xbox Series X or Series S. The documented preview is for the ROG Xbox Ally X in docked play, while Project Helix remains in development. So if you are asking whether an existing Xbox Series X|S can turn on Auto SR today, the answer is no—not according to the platforms Microsoft has documented.
