Windows Recall is both a practical search tool and a consequential privacy choice. On supported Copilot+ PCs, it saves screen snapshots locally and lets you search past activity using natural descriptions. Microsoft says snapshots and related data are not sent to the company or third parties, but keeping a searchable record on the device still creates risks if someone gains access to it. Whether Recall is worth using depends on how often you need to find something you saw and how sensitive your computer activity is.

What is Windows Recall?

Recall is a history-search feature for supported Copilot+ PCs. It periodically captures snapshots of what appears on screen, processes them on the device, and makes past activity searchable. Instead of remembering a filename, folder, or exact web address, you can describe what you recall seeing—for example, a document with a particular chart or a page you visited.

Microsoft recorded Recall’s general availability on April 25, 2025. That does not mean the feature is available on every Windows 11 computer: it requires a supported Copilot+ PC, and eligibility depends on the device and supported software configuration.

Why can Recall be useful?

Conventional search works best when you know a name or exact phrase. Recall is designed for the less precise situations in which you remember the visual context or general subject but not where you saw it. Searching across a visual history may help retrieve an app, website, image, document, or other on-screen activity.

The feature also reflects the hardware capabilities Microsoft built its Copilot+ PC category around. Microsoft introduced that category with neural processing units capable of 40+ TOPS (trillion operations per second). That figure describes the NPU capability associated with the category, not a measured Recall speed or guarantee of search accuracy.

Does Recall send screenshots to Microsoft?

Microsoft says Recall processes snapshots on the device and stores them on the Copilot+ PC. Its security statement says snapshots and associated data are not shared with Microsoft or third parties, and are not shared between different Windows users on the same device. This is Microsoft’s description of the feature’s architecture; it is not a guarantee that every possible threat to a device or account is eliminated.

Local processing is a meaningful privacy distinction from uploading a snapshot history to a cloud service. It does not mean that no record exists: Recall’s searchable history remains on the computer.

Why did people call Recall creepy or dangerous?

A periodic visual record can become a detailed history of someone’s digital life. Depending on what appears on screen, that history could include work, browsing, messages, financial pages, health information, or other sensitive material. Making such a record searchable can be useful to its owner—and concerning if the wrong person gains access.

The original announcement drew privacy and cybersecurity criticism. The Associated Press described the initial concept as a “photographic memory” of computer activity. Microsoft delayed broad availability while Recall went through Windows Insider testing and the company revised safeguards and opt-in behavior. That history matters: the current feature followed changes prompted by concerns about the original proposal.

What controls does Recall provide?

Microsoft documents controls that let users manage what is retained and included. The available controls include:

Microsoft also describes security layers for supported devices, including secured-core PC features, the Microsoft Pluton security processor, and Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security. These protections contribute to device security; they do not change the fact that Recall creates a local history or substitute for reviewing whether that history is appropriate for your use.

The exact current defaults and management options can depend on supported device and software configuration. Check the Recall privacy controls on your own PC rather than assuming a particular setting applies to every Copilot+ model.

What are the remaining privacy and security risks?

Local storage reduces exposure to a cloud service, but a local archive can still be valuable to an attacker who obtains access to the device or account. Malware with sufficient privileges, or someone able to export or photograph the screen, may also create risks. These are implications of retaining searchable information on a device, not a claim that Microsoft has reported a particular Recall breach.

Before enabling Recall, consider how the PC is protected and managed, including its encryption, account security, backup behavior, and who can access it. If your work involves regulated data or highly confidential material, check applicable organizational rules and assess the feature with your security or compliance team before using it.

Who should use Recall—and who may prefer not to?

Consideration Why it matters
Search usefulness Recall may help if you often need to find something you saw but cannot identify by name or location.
Device eligibility It is for supported Copilot+ PCs, not every Windows 11 computer.
Retention controls Pausing saves, deleting snapshots, and excluding apps or websites offer ways to manage the record.
Device and account protection Because the history is stored locally, access to the PC and account remains important.
Work sensitivity A searchable history may be unsuitable for some regulated, confidential, or otherwise sensitive activity.
Administration Organizations should verify current management policies and supported settings for their devices before allowing Recall.

Recall is most compelling for someone who frequently loses track of material seen on screen, uses an eligible device, and is comfortable managing a retained local history. Someone who handles sensitive information or does not want periodic snapshots may prefer to leave it off or limit what it can retain.

Which laptops support Windows Recall?

Look for a supported Copilot+ PC, not simply a laptop that runs Windows 11. Microsoft defines the Copilot+ category around an NPU capable of 40+ TOPS, but that category-level specification alone does not confirm every model’s Recall compatibility. Before buying, verify the exact model, Windows edition, market availability, and current listing status with Microsoft or the retailer. Microsoft lists Amazon among its retail partners for Copilot+ PCs, but a retailer’s catalog entry is not by itself a compatibility guarantee.
