Microsoft is the provisional winner on the cleanest disclosed comparison: Azure and other cloud services grew 40% year over year in Microsoft’s fiscal Q3 2026, versus 37% AWS growth in Amazon’s Q2 2026. That is a directional operating lead, not a synchronized quarter-for-quarter statistical test: Microsoft’s quarter ended March 31, 2026, while Amazon’s ended June 30, 2026. Investors who value AWS profitability, custom chips and accelerating AI demand can still prefer Amazon, but the growth metric currently favors Microsoft.

The one-metric verdict

Year-over-year cloud revenue growth is the most useful single metric for comparing Amazon and Microsoft as AI-cloud stocks. It captures whether customers are buying more cloud capacity and services, while avoiding the false precision of an “AI profit” comparison that neither company reports on a fully comparable basis.

Measure Microsoft Amazon What it indicates
Latest reported cloud growth Azure and other cloud services up 40% year over year in fiscal Q3 2026 AWS sales up 37% year over year in Q2 2026 Microsoft has the higher disclosed growth rate
Quarter end March 31, 2026 June 30, 2026 Periods are not calendar-synchronous
Reported cloud scale Microsoft Cloud revenue of $59.3 billion in fiscal Q4 2026; Azure exceeded $100 billion in annual revenue AWS annualized revenue run rate of $169 billion in Q2 2026 Both businesses operate at exceptional scale, measured differently

The practical conclusion is narrow: if your decision rule is “choose the company with faster latest reported cloud growth,” Microsoft wins. That result does not establish which stock will deliver the higher total return, because valuation, margins, capital spending, regulation, competition and the durability of growth also matter.

Why year-over-year cloud revenue growth is the cleanest test

It measures customer demand and monetization together

Cloud revenue rises when customers consume more compute, storage, databases, software and related services, and when the provider successfully converts that usage into billed sales. A year-over-year percentage therefore combines demand, workload expansion and pricing or mix effects in one observable number.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

AI workloads make this especially relevant. Training and inference require large amounts of accelerated computing, networking, storage and data services. As customers move from experiments to production, cloud revenue should reflect that transition even when a company does not disclose a separate AI income statement.

It is more comparable than an AI-only profit figure

Microsoft and Amazon define and report AI businesses differently. Microsoft’s AI run-rate statement includes a broad set of AI products and services, while Amazon’s AWS AI run rate is a management estimate within AWS. Neither disclosure provides an identically scoped profit figure. Comparing the reported cloud-growth rates avoids pretending that the accounting boundaries are the same.

Why use year-over-year rather than a single month or quarter

Cloud consumption can be seasonal, and large contracts can shift from one quarter to the next. A year-over-year comparison reduces the effect of recurring seasonal patterns and gives a clearer view of underlying momentum. It still cannot remove differences in fiscal calendars, foreign-exchange effects or accounting definitions, which is why the latest figures should be treated as directional evidence.

Read the latest Azure and AWS reports correctly

Microsoft fiscal Q3 2026

Microsoft reported that Azure and other cloud services revenue increased 40% year over year in fiscal Q3 2026. The quarter ended March 31, 2026. The phrase “Azure and other cloud services” is Microsoft’s reported category; it is not an Azure-only AI line and should not be read as a pure measure of artificial-intelligence sales.

Amazon Q2 2026

Amazon reported AWS sales of $42.2 billion in the quarter ended June 30, 2026, up 37% year over year. Amazon described this as AWS’s fastest growth in 18 quarters. AWS’s reported sales include the full cloud platform rather than only AI services.

Because the Amazon period ended three months after Microsoft’s, the comparison is not a synchronized snapshot of the same economic weeks. A customer signing a large AI contract in April, for example, could appear in Amazon’s quarter but not Microsoft’s. The 40% versus 37% spread is still useful as the latest company-reported directional signal, but it is not evidence of a precise head-to-head race on identical dates.

What the growth gap says about AI-cloud momentum

Microsoft’s lead suggests that Azure is currently converting AI-related demand and broader cloud expansion into revenue at a slightly faster reported pace. Microsoft has advantages that can help with conversion: Azure is integrated with Microsoft 365, Windows Server, developer tools and enterprise agreements, giving customers a path from existing software commitments to AI services.

AWS’s 37% growth remains unusually strong for a business of its size. Amazon’s characterization of the rate as its fastest in 18 quarters indicates a meaningful acceleration from the slower growth period that followed the 2022–2023 cloud optimization cycle. The result is not a weak showing; it is a narrower gap behind Azure on the selected metric.

Growth percentages should always be read with the starting base. A percentage point of growth on AWS’s very large revenue base represents substantial incremental dollars. Amazon reported $42.2 billion of AWS sales for Q2 2026, while Microsoft’s cloud disclosures use different reporting aggregates. The comparison is therefore about momentum, not a claim that one company generated more new dollars in the quarter.

AI monetization scale: large numbers with different definitions

Management disclosures provide a second lens, but they must remain qualified because the scopes differ.

AI disclosure Microsoft Amazon Qualification
Annual revenue run rate AI business surpassed $37 billion, up 123% year over year AWS AI business exceeded $25 billion and was growing at triple-digit percentages year over year Management-reported run rates with different product boundaries
Statement from leadership Satya Nadella said the AI business surpassed a $37 billion annual revenue run rate, up 123% year over year Andy Jassy said AWS’s AI and Chips businesses each eclipsed run rates above $25 billion; he described AWS growth as 36.7% year over year in Q2 Quotes describe company-defined categories, not standardized industry statistics

Microsoft’s $37 billion figure is larger than Amazon’s “above $25 billion” figure, but that does not prove that Microsoft has more AI revenue under an equivalent definition. Microsoft can include AI capabilities spread across Azure, software and services, whereas Amazon’s cited figure is specifically the AI business within AWS. Use the figures to establish that both companies have reached multi-billion-dollar AI run rates, not to rank them as if they were audited, identical segments.

Microsoft also reported that Microsoft 365 Copilot had more than 30 million paid seats. That installed-base metric matters because Copilot can drive recurring software monetization while increasing demand for Azure services behind the scenes. It is not included in the Azure growth percentage and should not be added to the $37 billion figure without a company-provided reconciliation.

Profitability: AWS discloses a measurable advantage, while Azure’s margin is not stated

AWS operating economics

Amazon reported Q2 2026 AWS sales of $42.2 billion and AWS operating income of $16.6 billion. Dividing operating income by sales gives an approximately 39.3% operating margin: $16.6 billion ÷ $42.2 billion = 39.3%, rounded.

This is a segment operating margin, not an AI-only margin. It includes AWS’s entire portfolio, including mature storage, database and compute services, as well as newer AI products. It demonstrates that AWS can produce substantial operating profit while investing heavily, but it does not reveal the profitability of a particular model, accelerator or generative-AI workload.

Why there is no Azure-only margin comparison

The cited Microsoft releases do not provide an Azure-only operating margin. Microsoft reports broader segment results and Microsoft Cloud revenue, but the available figures do not isolate Azure costs and profit in a way that can be compared directly with AWS’s segment margin. Any table assigning Azure a specific margin would be an invention, so the correct conclusion is that AWS has a disclosed margin and Azure’s comparable figure is not stated.

Do not mistake Amazon’s net income for AWS operating performance

Amazon’s Q2 2026 net income included $53.4 billion of pre-tax other income, primarily from investments in Anthropic. That non-operating item can materially inflate consolidated earnings without changing AWS’s operating profitability. When evaluating AI-cloud economics, use AWS segment operating income and sales for the operating calculation, and exclude the Anthropic-related other income from judgments about recurring cloud performance.

Investment intensity and cash flow change the risk profile

Amazon’s trailing-twelve-month free cash flow was negative $7.6 billion after a $66.1 billion year-over-year increase in purchases of property and equipment, primarily reflecting AI infrastructure investment. The spending includes data-center capacity, networking and accelerators needed to support customer workloads and Amazon’s own AI services.

Negative free cash flow is not automatically a sign that AWS demand is weak. A company can deliberately spend ahead of revenue when it expects capacity to be scarce or future workloads to grow rapidly. It does, however, raise two investor questions: how quickly the new capacity becomes revenue-producing, and whether returns on that capital exceed its cost.

Microsoft is also investing heavily in AI infrastructure, but the cited disclosures do not provide a directly comparable Microsoft free-cash-flow figure tied solely to Azure AI investment. The absence of a comparable number is itself a boundary on the analysis; it is not evidence that Microsoft spends less.

Scale and strategic position beyond the headline percentage

Microsoft’s integrated enterprise platform

Microsoft reported Microsoft Cloud revenue of $59.3 billion in fiscal Q4 2026, up 27% year over year, and said Azure revenue surpassed $100 billion for the first time. The Microsoft Cloud total is broader than Azure, while the $100 billion milestone refers to Azure annual revenue. Together, the figures show a platform with multiple monetization paths: infrastructure, developer services, business applications, security and productivity software.

The enterprise distribution model can reduce friction for AI adoption. Customers that already buy Microsoft licensing may add Azure capacity or Copilot under existing procurement relationships. That advantage can support growth, but it also means Microsoft’s AI economics are spread across several products rather than visible in one standalone line.

Amazon’s AWS platform and custom silicon

Amazon reported a $169 billion annualized AWS revenue run rate in Q2 2026. The annualized figure extrapolates one quarter’s sales; it is not the same as audited trailing-twelve-month revenue. AWS also develops custom chips and networking technologies, which can help manage the cost and availability of AI infrastructure. Andy Jassy said AWS’s AI and Chips businesses each exceeded $25 billion run rates, indicating that Amazon views silicon as a material business alongside cloud services.

AWS’s broad developer ecosystem, service catalog and long operating history remain important competitive assets. Even if Azure posts the faster latest growth rate, AWS can appeal to investors who prioritize disclosed segment profitability, infrastructure optionality and the possibility that custom silicon improves long-term unit economics.

  1. Record the exact metric label. Write down whether the company reports Azure and other cloud services, Microsoft Cloud, AWS sales or another aggregate. Do not mix a broad cloud total with an infrastructure-only figure.
  2. Capture the fiscal period and end date. Note the quarter number, end date and year-over-year comparison. If the periods do not align, label the result directional rather than synchronized.
  3. Check the base and absolute dollars. A high percentage on a smaller base and a slightly lower percentage on a larger base can produce different amounts of incremental revenue.
  4. Separate AI claims from cloud totals. Put AI run rates in a separate row and preserve the company’s wording. “Annual revenue run rate” is an extrapolation, not recognized revenue for a completed year.
  5. Pair growth with disclosed operating data. For AWS, calculate operating margin from segment sales and operating income. For Azure, report that an Azure-only margin is not stated rather than estimating one.
  6. Review capital intensity. Compare property-and-equipment spending and free cash flow where each company discloses them, then ask whether capacity is being converted into profitable revenue.
  7. Recheck the ranking each quarter. A one-period lead can reverse as contract timing, currency, seasonality and capacity constraints change. Look for several consecutive reports before treating a trend as durable.

Which stock fits which investor?

Microsoft for a growth-and-distribution thesis

  • Choose Microsoft if your primary screen is the latest reported cloud-growth rate and you value Azure’s 40% year-over-year result.
  • Its $37 billion AI annual run rate, 123% year-over-year increase and more than 30 million paid Microsoft 365 Copilot seats support a thesis that AI is spreading through an existing enterprise software base.
  • Azure’s first reported $100 billion annual-revenue milestone and the $59.3 billion Microsoft Cloud quarter show substantial scale, although those figures use different scopes.

Amazon for profitability, infrastructure and silicon exposure

  • Choose Amazon if you place greater weight on AWS’s disclosed approximately 39.3% operating margin and the ability to measure segment operating income directly.
  • AWS’s 37% growth and fastest pace in 18 quarters indicate strong acceleration despite its scale.
  • Custom chips and a stated AWS AI run rate above $25 billion may appeal to investors who believe hardware and cloud integration can improve economics over time.
  • Accept that negative trailing free cash flow and the $66.1 billion year-over-year increase in property-and-equipment purchases make execution and return on invested capital central risks.

Risks that can overturn the provisional ranking

Non-synchronous reporting

The Azure and AWS periods end on different dates, so a single-quarter gap can reflect timing. Wait for overlapping future periods before claiming that one provider has definitively won the growth race.

Different definitions of AI revenue

The $37 billion Microsoft AI run rate and Amazon’s above-$25-billion AWS AI run rate are management disclosures with different scopes. They cannot be used as a clean market-share table.

Capacity and supply constraints

AI demand can exceed available accelerators, data-center power or networking capacity. A slower quarter may reflect an inability to serve orders rather than weaker customer interest; a faster quarter may reflect catch-up capacity that is difficult to repeat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Capital-return risk

Large infrastructure programs create depreciation, financing and utilization risks. Amazon’s negative trailing free cash flow makes this issue visible now, while Microsoft’s cited releases do not provide an equivalent Azure-only cash-flow measure.

Accounting noise outside operations

Amazon’s $53.4 billion of pre-tax other income, primarily from Anthropic investments, shows why consolidated net income can be misleading for an operating comparison. Keep investment gains separate from AWS sales and operating income.

Valuation and shareholder returns

The metric identifies operating momentum, not a buy price. A faster-growing company can produce a lower stock return if investors have already priced in the growth, while a slower-growing company can outperform if expectations are too pessimistic. Valuation, dilution, buybacks, interest rates and regulation require a separate analysis.

Bottom line

On the requested one-metric test, Microsoft is ahead because its latest reported Azure and other cloud services growth was 40%, versus AWS growth of 37% in Amazon’s latest reported quarter. Treat that as a provisional operating verdict because the fiscal periods are not synchronized. Amazon remains a credible AI-cloud choice for investors who prioritize AWS’s measurable segment profitability, custom silicon and accelerating demand, but its heavy infrastructure spending and negative trailing free cash flow make execution and returns on capital decisive follow-up questions. Neither company’s growth lead, AI run-rate disclosure or quarterly margin establishes a prediction of total shareholder return.
