Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop 7th Edition and Surface Pro 11th Edition on May 20, 2024, introducing two Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs built around Qualcomm Snapdragon X processors. The Laptop is a conventional clamshell in 13.8-inch and 15-inch sizes; the Pro is a 13-inch detachable tablet, with OLED available on selected configurations. Consumers could buy them starting June 18, 2024, at a launch starting price of $999 USD. These are 2024 launch details, not current pricing: Microsoft announced a newer Surface Laptop and Surface Pro generation with Snapdragon X2 on June 16, 2026.
What Microsoft announced
Microsoft positioned both devices as Copilot+ PCs running Windows 11. They belong to the first Snapdragon X launch generation, with Snapdragon X Plus and X Elite processor options across the two product lines. Microsoft’s product fact sheets specify a Qualcomm Hexagon neural processing unit (NPU) rated at 45 TOPS for each line. The exact processor, memory, storage, and display depend on the model and configuration.

At the announcement, Pete Kyriacou, Microsoft CVP of Devices, called them “the fastest, most intelligent Windows PCs ever: Copilot+ PCs.” That was Microsoft’s promotional characterization, not an independent performance finding.
How the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro differ
| Product | Form factor and display | Documented configurations | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface Laptop 7th Edition | Traditional clamshell; 13.8-inch or 15-inch models. Microsoft lists the 13.8-inch display at 2304 × 1536, 201 PPI, with up to 120Hz dynamic refresh rate. | The 13.8-inch model is listed with 10-core Snapdragon X Plus or 12-core Snapdragon X Elite; the 15-inch model with X Elite. Fact-sheet options include 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB LPDDR5x RAM and removable Gen 4 SSDs of 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB, depending on SKU. | Choose this line if you want an integrated laptop keyboard and a larger-screen option. |
| Surface Pro 11th Edition | 13-inch detachable 2-in-1. Microsoft lists a 2880 × 1920, 267 PPI PixelSense Flow display with up to 120Hz; LCD and OLED are available on specified configurations. | The standard LCD configuration is listed with 10-core Snapdragon X Plus, 16GB RAM, and 256GB or 512GB removable Gen 4 SSD. OLED configurations are listed with 12-core X Elite, 16GB or 32GB RAM, and 512GB or 1TB storage. | The tablet’s keyboard and pen are separate accessory decisions; confirm what is included with the exact SKU. |
The configurations above come from Microsoft’s 2024 fact sheets and may vary by region and individual SKU. Check the precise configuration being sold rather than assuming every processor, memory, and storage combination is available in every size or display option.

Surface Pro accessories are not the same as built-in features
Microsoft lists Surface Pro Flex Keyboard compatibility with the 11th Edition Pro. The keyboard is designed for use attached to the tablet or detached. Microsoft also lists compatibility with Surface Slim Pen (2nd Edition). The keyboard and pen are accessory choices; do not assume they are included with the tablet.
Pen storage and wireless charging depend on compatible Surface Pro keyboard configurations. They are not functions built into the tablet by itself. Check the product listing for package contents and the exact keyboard configuration before buying.

What Copilot+ and Windows 11 meant at launch
Microsoft’s May 2024 announcement highlighted Windows 11 AI experiences including Cocreator, Windows Studio Effects, and Live Captions. Feature availability and behavior can change with Windows updates, and launch-era descriptions are not a guarantee that every feature works identically today. Microsoft’s contemporaneous notes also described language and usage limitations for some features.
The 45-TOPS figure is a published specification for the Qualcomm Hexagon NPU, not a measure of how quickly every application runs. Actual experience depends on the task, software, configuration, and feature support.

How to read Microsoft’s performance and battery claims
Microsoft’s announcement comparisons should be understood as company-reported results from specific tests, not as independent, all-purpose comparisons of every Surface configuration against every competing PC. The May 2024 announcement identified Microsoft-run Cinebench 2024 multi-threaded testing conducted in April 2024 on pre-release Surface and Apple MacBook Air M3 systems. Microsoft’s September business announcement also described Procyon AI Overall Score testing conducted in May 2024. Those benchmark results apply to the tested configurations and workloads.
Microsoft stated up to 22 hours of local video playback for the 15-inch Surface Laptop in its September 2024 business announcement, based on pre-production testing in April 2024. That is a manufacturer claim for that model and test condition, not a runtime figure for every Laptop or for mixed everyday use. Battery life varies with settings and usage.
Launch availability and price were different for consumers and businesses
| Channel | Availability stated by Microsoft | Launch price stated by Microsoft |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer | June 18, 2024 | Starting estimated retail price (ERP) of $999 USD |
| Business | September 2024 | Starting price of $1,099 USD |
These are historical launch figures, not current offers. Microsoft’s June 2024 consumer post also described an Essentials Bundle and a 20% discount on accessories including the Surface Pro Flex Keyboard; that promotion was launch-era and should not be treated as available now. Current prices, inventory, regional configurations, and bundle contents require checking with the seller.
Quick Recap
Which one makes more sense for your setup?
- Choose the Laptop form factor if you want a conventional clamshell with an integrated keyboard and a choice of 13.8-inch or 15-inch screen.
- Consider the Pro form factor if you want a detachable 13-inch device and value the option of an OLED configuration. Budget separately for a keyboard or pen if your work requires them.
- Compare exact SKUs for processor, RAM, storage, display, package contents, and current total cost; product-family names alone do not identify a complete configuration.
- For a current-generation purchase decision, account for Microsoft’s June 2026 announcement of newer Surface Laptop and Surface Pro models with Snapdragon X2. The 2024 models remain the subject of the original Copilot+ PC announcement, but they are not the newest generation at the date of this article.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
